Nigeria Seeks Joint West Africa Regional Protection of Undersea Cables

0
EVC NCC, Aminu Maida

Following recent undersea cable cuts that challenged connectivities in many countries in the West Afrcan region, Nigeria has called for a coordinated and multilateral approach by the region to protect shared telecommunications infrastructure, and diversify connectivity to ensure uninterruptible connections.

Executive Vice Chairman of the  Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, made the submission in a statement delivered at the 21st West Africa Telecommunications Regulatory Assembly (WATRA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) which held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, from the 19th to 22nd March 2024.

Dr. Maida, whose message was delivered at the WATRA AGM by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs of the Commission, Nnenna Ukoha, stated that the recent submarine cable cuts that resulted in nationwide outages on multiple networks in 12 African countries has raised the urgent need for the subregion to establish a mechanism to protect itself from damage to submarine infrastructure and its attendant impact on the subregion.

Maida referred to a report by Cloudflare, an IT service management firm, which indicates that about six countries, including four West African countries, were still suffering from the outages caused by the submarine cable cuts, to buttress the call.

“Securing telecom infrastructure is paramount for fostering Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and enhancing investor confidence in the West African sub-region. The reliability and resilience of telecommunications networks are crucial factors that investors consider when evaluating regional opportunities.

“By ensuring the security of these vital assets, we can attract more investment, spur economic growth, and enhance our competitiveness on the global stage. A secure telecoms infrastructure not only facilitates efficient communication and connectivity but also signals a commitment to safeguarding critical assets essential for business operations. This assurance can significantly boost investor confidence and create a conducive environment for sustainable economic development,” he said.

According to him, “the impact of events like cable cuts highlights the need for a coordinated, multilateral approach to protecting shared infrastructure across our member nations.”

Maida therefore, proposed “the urgent need to set up a framework for joint monitoring, risk mitigation, and emergency response procedures for the submarine cables that pass through the sub-region.

“Further to this, we recommend that the WATRA Working Group on Infrastructure expand its mandate to spearhead the development of a comprehensive strategy to safeguard the subregion’s telecommunications networks and associated infrastructure thereby proactively bolstering resilience through improved disaster response protocols to better insulate ourselves from future disruptions.”

He advised that the goals of the Working Group would be to strengthen sub-regional infrastructure resilience, promote the diversification of the sub-region’s connectivity, conduct regular capacity assessments, as well as facilitate the designation of telecommunications infrastructure as critical national infrastructure in member countries.

The West Africa Telecommunications Regulators Assembly, was established in 2002 as a common platform for national telecommunication regulatory authorities in 16 member states to promote the adoption of regulations that stimulate investment in telecommunication infrastructure to deliver more affordable, accessible, faster and secure communication services to citizens.

At the 21st WATRA Annual General Meeting, issues pertaining to accessible and affordable telecommunication services in the sub-region were discussed, including improved consumer protection, quality of service, roaming and conflict resolution for consumers.

A major highlight of the AGM was the reelection of Nigeria’s Engr. Yusuf Aliyu Aboki, as Executive Secretary, for a second term in a unanimous vote by the member countries.

The EVC of NCC commended Engr. Aboki for his firm, inclusive and visionary leadership, which saw the successful delivery of WATRA’s 2022 — 2025 Strategic Plan, noting that Nigeria and indeed the sub-region was proud of the milestones he has achieved during his first tenure.

He further advised the WATRA Executive Secretary to build on the achievements of his first tenure, through stronger partnerships and deeper collaboration while advancing the interests of the sub-regional body.

Declaring Simon Ekpa wanted sessionist won’t stop Biafra Independence declaration in 2024- BRGIE

0

The Biafra Republic Government In-Exile said the declaration of its Prime Minister Simon Ekpa ‘wanted sessionist’ by the Nigerian Defence Headquarters will not stop the declaration of Biafra independent state on 2nd December 2024.

BRGIE disclosed in a statement on Sunday.

Recall that on Friday, the Nigerian Army, in a statement by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba declared Ekpa and 96 others wanted over insecurity.

However, BRGIE insisted it would not deter it from seeking a Biafran referendum.

Accordingly, BRGIE noted that the action by the Nigerian Army showed a green light for Biafra Liberation.

BRGIE said that its leader Ekpa is facing similar persecucion like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nelson Mandela.

It noted that insecurity in Nigeria is unconnected to Ekpa, instead, it is perpetuated by some governors and actors within the Nigerian Government to amass allocated security votes.

BRGIE stressed that insecurity in Nigeria is caused by years of misrule and injustices on citizens and has given birth to anarchy nationwide.

The Government urged Biafrans to remain resolute in their quest for Liberation and Referendum.

BRGIE said persons who do not want to see Biafra Independence come are persona non-grata in Biafra territory.

It added that the Biafra government would not waste time in challenging the declaration of Ekpa wanted in any Nigerian court.

“The declaration of Simon Ekpa ‘wanted’ by Nigeria DHQ showed that there is a greenlight to Biafra independence, right from the history of freedom fighting, when the oppressors declared that the leader of a freedom fighting movement a terrorist showed that there is a greenlight.

“Nnamdi Azikiwe was declared wanted at one point and was also jailed together with Obafemi Awolowo, yet Nigeria regained its independence from Great Britain. Nelson Mandela was also declared a wanted by the apartheid regime but was later celebrated. I called on Biafra to remain resolved and strong. Simon Ekpa is not a wanted person as claimed by the Nigerian Government because I am a Biafra.

“Some people in Nigeria sponsor the insecurity. Insecurity was there before Simon Ekpa became the leader of the Biafra Republic. I am not the cause of insecurity in the North, southwest, or middlebelt. The major sponsors of insecurity are the governors, and the Federal Government of Nigeria is complicit. They do it to amass security votes.

“The causes of insecurity are long-term misrule and injustices that have melted on the citizens. This has given birth to anarchy all over Nigeria.

“The declaration that Simon Ekpa wanted was because BRGIE had set a date for the Biafra declaration of the restoration of the independent state of Biafra on 2nd December.

“It is elements within the Nigerian Government that are sponsoring insecurity and terrorism in Nigeria. We have seen the Nigerian Government rehabilitating terrorists, allowing bandits to go on kidnapping sprees across the country.

“The Declaration of Ekpa wanted cannot stop the declaration of Biafra independence this year. We will continue to delegitimize Nigeria within Biafra territory”, BRGIE stated.

“The Biafra government will not challenge the declaration of the Prime Minister of Biafra, Simon Ekpa wanted sessionist by the Nigerian Army”, BRGIE stated.

Understanding Staking and Decentralized Finance at Biafra Buy/Stake Inc

What does Staking entail?

Staking within the realm of cryptocurrency involves the act of securing or immobilizing a designated quantity of tokens in a digital wallet to actively support the functionality and governance of a blockchain network. In exchange for their involvement, participants earn incentives, usually in the form of supplementary tokens. It parallels the concept of accruing interest in a conventional banking setting, albeit within the context of blockchain technology.

What Rewards Can I Obtain Through Staking with USBT?

With the USBT staking program, you can earn rewards on their staked tokens with our structured framework:

– After a 0-hours lockup period, you start receiving rewards based on the ROI at the time of your initial investment.

What Risks Should I Be Aware of When Staking?

Although staking presents opportunities for rewards, it’s essential to consider potential risks:

– Market Volatility: Fluctuations in token value due to market conditions may affect the final value of staked tokens, potentially resulting in gains or losses.

– Liquidity Concerns: Tokens committed to staking are not readily available for trading or liquidation, which could pose challenges if immediate access to funds is required.

– Smart Contract Vulnerabilities: Inherent to blockchain activities, smart contracts governing staking operations may contain bugs or vulnerabilities, exposing staked assets to potential risks.

Legal Disclaimer

Blockchain investments, including staking, are subject to high market risk. Biafra Buy/Stake Inc. does not guarantee any returns on staking investments. We advise our community members to exercise due diligence and caution and to invest responsibly within their financial limits.

What is Decentralized Finance (DeFi) ?

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) embodies a suite of financial services built atop blockchain technology, primarily leveraging Ethereum. These platforms facilitate lending, borrowing, trading, and yield farming of cryptocurrencies, eliminating the necessity for conventional financial intermediaries such as banks. DeFi endeavours to establish an inclusive, transparent, and accessible financial ecosystem.

Additional Points to Note:

– Network Support: Staking plays a pivotal role in upholding the integrity and security of the blockchain network. Your active involvement contributes to its overall robustness.

– Tax Considerations: Keep in mind that staking rewards might trigger tax obligations depending on your jurisdiction. Seek guidance from a tax professional for tailored advice.

– Educational Resources: We advocate for the utilization of educational materials to gain a comprehensive understanding of blockchain technology, staking mechanisms, and DeFi protocols.

Remember, your engagement in staking and DeFi transcends mere investment; it signifies a commitment to fostering a decentralized future. This aligns with the mission of Biafra Coin Inc. to empower communities through renewable energy solutions and equitable financial frameworks.
