The presidency has said that Nigerians can still take more loans to finance infrastructure across the country.

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said this in a statement posted on his verified X handle on Tuesday.

Onanuga said that Nigeria has not overborrowed compared to countries like Egypt, South Africa, and the West African country of Senegal.

He was reacting to criticisms that the current administration of President Tinubu has borrowed more in three years than the previous administration did in eight years.

“Nigeria has not overborrowed compared to countries like Egypt, South Africa, and the West African country of Senegal.

“Nigeria is creditworthy and can still take more loans to finance infrastructure.

“The unwarranted alarm against loans is symptomatic of economic and financial ignorance,” he said.

DAILY POST reports that at the moment, Nigeria’s total public debt stands at roughly N159 trillion, split between external and domestic obligations.

The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27 and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to commemorate this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebration.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.

According to the statement, the public holidays underscore the Federal Government’s respect for the faith and spiritual heritage of millions of Muslims in Nigeria joining the global Islamic community to observe the sacred festival.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful in Nigeria and across the diaspora, describing Eid-ul-Adha as a celebration that reflects the values of sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion for humanity.

He urged Nigerians to use the festive period to pray and reflect on the nation’s progress, while seeking divine guidance for sustained peace, security, and prosperity.

“It is in the spirit of brotherhood, shared humanity, and national unity that the Federal Government wishes all Muslims a peaceful, blessed and joyous celebration,” the statement added.

BREAKING: APC Chairman’s Ex-Chief of Staff announces defection to NDC

0

Former Chief of Staff to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, Mustapha Bala Dawaki, has defected to the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC.

Dawaki, who previously represented Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, dumped the APC barely one week after losing the opportunity to contest again under the party’s platform following a consensus arrangement.

The development was confirmed on Monday by Saifullahi Hassan, media aide to Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a prominent leader of the NDC and the Kwankwasiyya movement.

According to Hassan, Dawaki officially joined the opposition party during a meeting held at Kwankwaso’s Miller Road residence in Kano.

“Today, Leader Kwankwaso welcomed Mustapha Bala Dawaki, former Chief of Staff to the APC National Chairman, into the NDC Kwankwasiyya family,” Hassan wrote on his official Facebook page.

Dawaki’s defection comes amid ongoing consultations within the NDC over the selection of candidates for party tickets across Kano State through consensus arrangements.

However, it remains unclear whether the former lawmaker will automatically secure the party’s ticket for any elective position ahead of the next elections.

‘You wanted to sleep with me’—BBNaija’s winner Phyna accuses VeryDarkMan

0

Former Big Brother Naija winner Phyna has accused popular Nigerian influencer VeryDarkMan of allegedly manipulating public opinion against her after she rejected his alleged sexual advance.

Phyna made the allegation on Sunday in a series of posts shared on X amid her ongoing online dispute with the influencer.

The reality star had earlier contacted VeryDarkMan in 2025 to seek justice for her late younger sister, Ruth Otabor, who reportedly died after being hit by a truck belonging to Dangote Cement in Edo State.

Following public outrage and VeryDarkMan’s involvement in the case, Dangote Cement reportedly pledged to take responsibility for the medical treatment of the accident victims.

However, days later, VeryDarkMan withdrew from the matter, alleging that Phyna had gone behind him to negotiate directly with the company.

Reacting to the claim, Phyna denied holding any secret negotiations and accused the influencer of attempting to twist the narrative against her while also blocking her.

Speaking further about their fallout over the weekend, the BBNaija star alleged that VeryDarkMan had expressed interest in sleeping with her, but she rejected him.

Sharing what she described as chat evidence, Phyna said she could never forgive the influencer for allegedly tarnishing her image during the campaign for justice over her sister’s death.

“VeryDarkMan came out to say the opposite of what happened. I can never forgive him because he turned me into a bad person over my sister’s case.

“He is someone I held in high esteem, but he switched up on me, claiming I requested N1 billion from Dangote.

“I was shocked because such a conversation never happened. Maybe he started holding grudges against me because he said he wanted to sleep with me and I didn’t accept,” she said.

Civil war: Why Gowon owes Igbo apology — Onoh

0

Former member of the Enugu State House of Assembly and ex-South-East spokesman for President Bola Tinubu, Denge Onoh, has explained why former Head of State Yakubu Gowon should apologize to the Igbo over his recent comments on civilian casualties during the Nigerian Civil War.

Onoh faulted Gowon’s remarks during an interview on Arise Television, describing them as a dangerous attempt to downplay the scale of human suffering recorded during the war.

Gowon had recalled visiting former Biafran territories after the conflict and noticing black spots on palm trees, which he said he was told were bullet marks. According to him, the observation suggested that many bullets fired by federal troops struck palm trees instead of people.

Reacting in a statement, Onoh said the comments contradicted historical records, eyewitness accounts, and international reports documenting the devastation caused by the war.

He argued that the remarks failed to acknowledge the magnitude of the tragedy experienced in the South-East during the conflict fought between 1967 and 1970.

According to Onoh, an estimated three million people died during the war, with many victims succumbing to starvation and disease linked to the federal blockade, while others were killed in combat operations, bombings, and reprisals.

“Reducing these horrors to bullets harmlessly striking palm trees does not withstand basic scrutiny,” Onoh said.

“It ignores the well-documented humanitarian crisis, including widespread kwashiorkor among children, mass displacement, and the devastating human cost of prolonged fighting across the South-East.”

Cooking gas price increases across Nigeria

0

Nigerians may face tougher times as the price of cooking gas, also known as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), has increased across the country amid reports of supply scarcity.

The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, NALPGAM, said the price of cooking gas has risen to about N1,500 per kilogram in Abuja from N1,200 earlier this month.

NALPGAM President, Edu Inyang, and the association’s Executive Secretary, Bassey Essien, disclosed this in a joint statement issued at the weekend.

The increase represents a N300 rise per kilogram, translating to about 25 percent.

The development means Nigerians already struggling with the high cost of living will now pay more to refill their cooking gas cylinders, depending on their location nationwide.

Reacting to the hike, gas marketers described the situation as “sad and rather very pathetic.”

“The citizens of Nigeria have woken up to buy cooking gas, which should be a social item, at a prohibitive cost of over N1,500 per kg,” the association stated.

NALPGAM warned that growing frustration among consumers could trigger reactions against cooking gas retailers if urgent intervention is not taken by the Federal Government.

“We feel that if the situation is not immediately checked, the citizens may rise against the owners of gas filling stations,” the marketers added.

Recall that the price of cooking gas stood at about N1,200 per kilogram earlier in May 2026 before the latest increase.

ADC: Trouble for Atiku, Amaechi as Kachikwu clinches presidential ticket

0

There is palpable trouble for David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress, as Dumebi Kachikwu clinched the presidential ticket of the opposition party under a rival faction.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that Kachikwu, who was the party presidential flagbearer for 2023 general elections, emerged victorious at a parallel national convention conducted at the weekend in Abuja.

In his acceptance speech, Kachikwu said, “For too long, politics has benefited only a few while the majority of Nigerians continue to suffer. That must change.”

The Board of Trustees chairman and national chairman of the ADC faction, Kingsley Ogga and Abdulkadir Mohammed Bashir, said the party has emerged stronger despite challenges in the last months.

The development comes at a time former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen battle for the presidential ticket at the presidential primary of the David Mark-led ADC.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that on April 30, 2026, the Supreme Court set aside a court of appeals order used by the Independent National Electoral Commission to derecognize David Mark-led ADC leadership.

However, a senior advocate of Nigeria, Oba Maduabuchi, said the Supreme Court judgment does not warrant celebration from Mark-led ADC leadership.

Meanwhile, in a different suit in court, the Kachikwu-backed faction of ADC had challenged the authenticity of Mark-led leadership.

Earlier, the Nafiu Bala Gombe faction of the ADC had also claimed to be the legitimate leadership of the opposition party.

Recall that on the weekend, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerged as the winner of the ruling All Progressives Congress presidential primary with over 10 million votes.

In his acceptance speech, Tinubu said his administration will not allow an opposition party without a clear vision to take over the country.
