EPL: Man City suffer huge injury blow ahead of Liverpool showdown

0

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted that Bernardo Silva remains a major injury concern ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield.

The Portuguese midfielder featured in City’s 3–1 victory over Newcastle United in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, but his availability for the weekend remains uncertain.

Speaking on Silva’s condition, Guardiola revealed that the player is eager to play but is still struggling with a muscle issue.

“Yesterday he said to me, ‘I feel quite good. I want to try, but I don’t know,” Guardiola said. “It’s another type of muscle in the hamstring area, less dangerous than the hamstring itself. We will see in the next days.

“To say he ‘could be OK’ is not the right description. He’s a huge doubt. Knowing him, he will try, but right now, I honestly don’t know.”

City will make a late decision on Silva as they prepare for the high-stakes encounter against the reigning champions.

Naira posts strongest two-day gain against US dollar

The naira has recorded its strongest two-day appreciation against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) show that the local currency strengthened to N1,358.28 per dollar on Wednesday, improving from N1,372.91 recorded on Tuesday.

This represents a day-on-day gain of N14.63. The appreciation followed Tuesday’s rally, when the naira gained N17.45 against the dollar, bringing its total two-day advance to N32.08 at the official market.

The latest performance signals a gradual push towards the N1,300 per dollar level, a rate last seen in March 2024.

However, the naira traded weaker at the parallel market, where it exchanged at about N1,460 per dollar on Wednesday, according to Bureau De Change operators in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja.

The continued strengthening of the naira at the official market coincides with a rise in Nigeria’s external reserves, which climbed to $46.70 billion as of February.

You’re a tyrant—Elon Musk slams Spain’s PM after he orders probe of X’s Grok, TikTok, Instagram

0

X owner Elon Musk has lashed out at Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez following Spain’s announcement of a sweeping inquiry into alleged violations by major social media platforms, including Instagram, TikTok, and X’s AI system, Grok.

Speaking at the World Governments Summit 2026 in Dubai, Sánchez said Spain would show “zero tolerance” for breaches of digital laws and would defend its “digital sovereignty against foreign coercion.” The summit is focused on artificial intelligence, economic growth, and governance under the theme Shaping Future Governments.

The Spanish leader revealed that, from next week, the government will amend its laws to make top technology executives personally accountable for violations occurring on their platforms. Under the proposed changes, CEOs could face criminal liability for failing to remove illegal or hateful content.

Sánchez urged governments worldwide to stop ignoring the harmful effects of online platforms, warning against the assumption that technology is neutral. He said Spain plans to criminalize the manipulation of algorithms and the amplification of illegal content, accusing some platforms of profiting from disinformation.

“Disinformation is created, promoted, and spread by certain actors,” Sánchez said, adding that both those actors and platforms that amplify falsehoods for profit would be held responsible.

He also announced plans to ban social media access for children under 16, citing similar laws already enforced in Australia and proposed in Greece, France, and the United Kingdom. Sánchez argued that children are being exposed to online spaces “they were never meant to navigate alone,” pledging to shield them from what he described as the “digital wild west” of abuse, addiction, manipulation, and violence.

In addition, Spain plans to introduce a “hate and polarization footprint,” a mechanism designed to measure and expose how digital platforms fuel division and spread hateful content.

Reacting to the speech, Musk posted a series of attacks on X, describing Sánchez as “dirty,” “a tyrant and traitor to the people of Spain,” and “the true fascist totalitarian.”

Meanwhile, X and its Grok AI system are already under investigation in France and the United Kingdom over alleged violations, with French authorities reportedly summoning Musk for questioning.

Manchester City will take on Arsenal in the 2026 Carabao Cup final at Wembley on March 22.

City booked their place in the final with a 3–1 victory over Newcastle in the second leg of their semi-final tie.

A first-half brace from Omar Marmoush, along with a goal by Tijjani Reijnders before the break, secured the win for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Arsenal had earlier sealed their spot in the final on Tuesday after defeating Chelsea in their own semi-final encounter.

NCC, NSCDC warn construction firms over fiber-optic cable damage nationwide

0

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have warned against fiber-optic cable damage during road construction and related civil works across the country, as the rising incidents of avoidable fiber cuts resulting from negligence will no longer be excused, noting that offenders risk prosecution as the act constitutes a crime.

In a joint statement by Mrs. Nnenna Ukoha and Babawale Afolabi, spokespersons for NCC and NSCDC, they stressed that fiber optic cables are critical national assets that power Nigeria’s digital economy, enable seamless communication, support emergency services, connect businesses, and facilitate government operations. They said their destruction, whether through negligence, lack of coordination, or willful actions, poses a direct threat to national security, economic stability, and public safety.

According to the organizations, “Under the Designation and Protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) Order 2024, telecommunication fiber infrastructure is classified as Critical National Information Infrastructure. Consequently, any damage resulting from unauthorized digging, construction activities, or failure to collaborate with relevant authorities to prevent damage during construction constitutes a criminal offense.”

They warned that individuals, construction companies, or government contractors who damage fiber optic infrastructure would be made to face prosecution and applicable sanctions as provided under existing laws, including the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015.

The NCC and NSCDC therefore issue a categorical warning that “future damage to fiber optic infrastructure caused by excavation, road construction, or any civil engineering activity conducted without due consultation or collaboration with network operators and relevant regulators will attract strict legal consequences.”

They called on federal, state, and local government agencies; road construction companies; utility service providers; and private developers to ensure full compliance by conducting pre‑construction verification of fiber routes; collaborating with the NCC, telecom operators, and NSCDC before and during construction; adhering to approved guidelines for excavation and right‑of‑way management; and reporting any accidental damage immediately to enable rapid response and mitigation.

Senate didn’t reject electronic transmission of election results—Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed reports claiming that the Senate rejected the electronic transmission of election results during deliberations on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill.

Akpabio made the clarification shortly after the upper chamber passed the bill following a marathon sitting that lasted about four and a half hours.

Debate on the controversial amendment to Clause 60, Subsection 3, of the bill began around 2:00 pm and continued until 6:26 pm, triggering widespread speculation online that lawmakers had voted against mandatory electronic transmission of results.

Media reports had suggested that the Senate shot down a proposal that would have compelled presiding officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to upload polling unit results electronically to the INEC Result Viewing (IREV) portal in real time after signing and stamping the prescribed forms.

The reports further claimed that the Senate retained the existing provision of the Electoral Act, which allows presiding officers to transmit results, including the number of accredited voters, in a manner determined by INEC.

However, Akpabio described such interpretations as misleading, stressing that electronic transmission of results was neither removed nor rejected.

“Distinguished colleagues, social media is awash with reports that the Senate has rejected electronic transmission of results. That is not true,” he said.

“What we did was to retain the provision on electronic transmission that already exists in the law and was applied in the 2022 elections. It is still part of our electoral framework.”

Akpabio added that the Senate merely upheld the previous provision, which already accommodates electronic transmission, noting that the lawmakers had no intention of reversing existing gains.

“This Senate, under my watch, has not rejected electronic transmission of results. We cannot afford to go backwards,” he said, urging the public not to be swayed by misinformation.

Atiku spokesperson gets appointment after clash with Onanuga

Public Communication to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar: Phrank Shaibu has been appointed as African Union Ambassador.

The Media Adviser to Atiku, Paul Ibe, disclosed this in a statement to Nigerian Newssphere on Wednesday after his induction into the Governing Council of the Pan African AU Agenda 2063.

According to the letter, Shaibu’s nomination is in recognition of his “outstanding excellence as an educationist, administrator, academic, and businessman.”

“After a distinguished review of your exemplary contributions to national development and your invaluable service under various political leaders in Nigeria, it is with profound honor that we hereby convey your nomination into the advisory council of the Pan-African AU Agenda 2063 Diplomatic Mission.

“In addition, the Governing Council is pleased to further nominate you to serve as an Ambassador Plenipotentiary of the Mission—a role reserved for exceptional leaders whose influence, intellect, and integrity embody the spirit of the African Union Agenda 2063.”

This comes barely two days after Shaibu clashed online with Bayo Onanuga, the spokesperson for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

2027: Nigerian Senate rejects electronic transmission of election results

0

The Senate has rejected a proposed amendment to the Electoral Amendment Bill that sought to make the electronic transmission of election results mandatory.

The amendment targeted Clause 60, Subsection 3, and would have required presiding officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to upload polling unit results electronically to the IREV portal in real time. This was to be done after Form EC&A had been properly completed, signed, and stamped by the presiding officer and countersigned by party agents.

Instead, lawmakers resolved to retain the existing provision in the Electoral Act. The current law states that “the presiding officer shall transfer the results, including the total number of accredited voters and the results of the ballot, in a manner as prescribed by the Commission.”

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission has said it is finalizing the timetable for the 2027 general elections, amid delays by the National Assembly in passing amendments to the Electoral Act.

Iran formally permits women to drive motorcycles

0

Iranian authorities have officially clarified traffic regulations to allow women to obtain motorcycle riding licenses, according to local media reports on Wednesday.

Until now, the country’s laws did not expressly ban women from riding motorcycles or scooters. In practice, however, licensing authorities routinely refused to issue permits to female applicants, leaving many women without legal protection on the roads.

Because they were unlicensed, female riders were often held responsible in traffic accidents, even in cases where they were not at fault.

The new policy follows a resolution signed on Tuesday by Iran’s First Vice President, Mohammad Reza Aref, aimed at removing ambiguities in existing traffic laws. The resolution, which received cabinet approval in late January, directs traffic police to provide official riding training for women, conduct licensing tests under police supervision, and issue motorcycle licenses to qualified female applicants.

The clarification comes at a time of heightened social and political tension in Iran. Protests that began over economic issues have expanded into broader demonstrations challenging government authority. Authorities in Tehran have reported more than 3,000 deaths linked to the unrest, saying most were security personnel and civilians not directly involved in the protests.

Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iranian women have faced strict legal and social restrictions, including enforced dress codes that made riding motorcycles difficult and discouraged official recognition of female riders.

Despite these limitations, more women have begun riding motorcycles in recent months, increasingly defying enforcement of dress regulations. This trend accelerated after the 2022 death of Mahsa Amini, who died following her detention by morality police over an alleged dress code violation—an incident that sparked nationwide protests and renewed calls for expanded rights for women in Iran.
