NNPCL Boss hails Dangote Refinery as lifeline for Nigeria’s fuel aupply

0

The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bayo Ojulari, has said Nigerians have strong reasons to appreciate the Dangote Refinery, describing it as a critical support to the nation’s oil and gas industry.

Ojulari made the remarks on Wednesday at the International Energy Summit 2026 in Abuja, noting that the 650,000 barrels-per-day facility has helped reduce pressure on Nigeria’s fuel supply chain.

He explained that the current leadership of NNPCL has chosen to work closely with the privately owned refinery, opting for partnership rather than rivalry. According to him, although the plant has not yet fully satisfied local fuel demand, its operations have played a key role in limiting Nigeria’s vulnerability to supply shocks.

Ojulari told participants that regardless of personal opinions about the refinery’s owner, Nigerians should appreciate the value the facility brings to the country, especially as it is locally owned and operational.

He added that while the refinery does not yet cover total national needs, it has created some relief in the system and provides strategic advantage, noting that NNPCL also holds equity in the project.

The NNPCL chief further emphasised that collaboration with the Dangote Refinery remains a core part of the company’s strategy to deliver maximum benefit to Nigerians.

His comments come against the backdrop of a recent hike in fuel prices across the country, following increases in ex-depot prices by the Dangote Refinery and other depot operators, which have pushed petrol prices in Abuja to between N839 and N905 per liter.

Yahaya Bello’s N82bn trial is political, not money laundering—Lawyer tells Court

0

Counsel to the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, Joseph Daudu, SAN, has told the Federal High Court in Abuja that the ongoing trial over alleged N80.2 billion fraud against his client is politically motivated and does not amount to money laundering.

Daudu made the submission on Wednesday during proceedings in the suit instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), following comments by EFCC counsel, Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, who had described the pattern of payments by local government areas in Kogi State as “stealing by disguise.”

Responding, Daudu argued that the allegations before the court were political in nature and not supported by evidence of money laundering.

Meanwhile, the seventh prosecution witness, Olomotane Egoro, a compliance officer with Access Bank Plc, testified that Bello’s name did not feature in any of the transactions being investigated.

Under cross-examination, the witness confirmed that the former governor never served as a local government chairman in any of Kogi State’s 21 local government areas and that the contracts referenced in the case were awarded by local government chairmen to various contractors.

Egoro further told the court that Bello’s name did not appear as either sender or beneficiary in any of the local government transactions under review. He also admitted that entries contained in Exhibit 33(11), detailing transactions between the local governments and Keyless Nature Limited, were consistent with normal banking operations.

When asked whether he knew the purpose of several payments made into Keyless Nature Limited’s account on October 11, 2022, the witness replied in the negative, adding that he could not determine from the bank records whether there was any contractual relationship between the local governments and the company.

The witness also agreed that customers are free to spend their funds as they deem fit, provided there is no indication of fraud. He confirmed that Access Bank was not acting under any court order concerning the transactions in Exhibit 33(11) and that there was no fraud report linked to them.

On payments made to Fayzade Business Enterprise, Egoro identified a transaction dated May 6, 2022, as an inflow from Okene Local Government Area, stating that the purpose was for the supply of reading materials.

He also outlined other payments from various local governments, including Ogorimagongo, Okehi, Omala, and Yagba, which were earmarked for education materials, medical items, sporting equipment, medical consumables, agrochemicals, and farm inputs, among others.

When asked directly whether Yahaya Bello was a local government chairman in Kogi State, the witness responded that he was not.

Justice Emeka Nwite adjourned the case to February 5 and 6, 2026, for continuation of trial.

Maina: Ex-Pension Boss convicted over N2bn fraud slumps, hospitalized in Abuja

Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), has reportedly collapsed and was rushed to hospital in Abuja.

The incident occurred on Tuesday near his office, according to his media aide, Emmanuel Nweke. He said Maina lost consciousness after slipping while attempting to enter the premises.

Nweke explained that the fall was linked to complications from a long-standing knee injury that had not been treated, causing him to lose balance on the staircase and hit his head.

Medical personnel at the scene reportedly administered first aid before Maina was taken to a private hospital in Abuja for further treatment.

“He is currently receiving close medical attention and remains under observation,” the aide said, adding that doctors have advised that an air ambulance medical evacuation may be considered if his condition does not stabilize.

Nweke noted that Maina’s family and medical team are monitoring his progress and appealed to the public for prayers, understanding, and respect for privacy.

Maina was recently released from the Kuje Correctional Centre after serving a jail term following his conviction over pension-related fraud. He was found guilty by a Federal High Court in Abuja in November 2021 on charges of money laundering involving N2 billion.

Ex-Benue Gov Suswam dumps PDP

Former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Suswam announced his decision in a letter dated February 4, addressed to the Chairman of the Mbagber Council Ward in the Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

In the letter, the former governor attributed his resignation to the persistent internal crisis within the opposition party, which he said has remained unresolved.

Although he did not disclose his next political move, Suswam has been linked to a coalition of opposition leaders that recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a platform ahead of the next election.

“I consider it honorable and necessary to step aside while wishing the party well should it one day find the courage and consensus to resolve its long-standing issues,” he stated.

INEC finalizes 2027 election timetable

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has restated its readiness to conduct the 2027 general elections, even as the amendment of the Electoral Act remains pending at the National Assembly.

The commission revealed that it has already finalized the election timetable and schedule of activities while awaiting legislative action on the proposed amendments to the law.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during a meeting with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).

He noted that although INEC has submitted its inputs to lawmakers, the timing of the passage of the amended Electoral Act could still have implications for some elements of the election program.

According to him, certain activities captured in the timetable may need to be reviewed depending on when the National Assembly concludes work on the amendment.

Amupitan, however, assured stakeholders that the commission remains fully committed to conducting a transparent and credible election.

He added that until the amended Electoral Act is passed and signed into law, INEC will continue to operate strictly within the provisions of the existing legal framework.

Naira rebounds, gains massively against US dollar

The naira recorded a strong rebound against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Tuesday, posting one of its biggest single-day gains in recent months.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the local currency appreciated to N1,372.91 per dollar on Tuesday, up from N1,390.36 traded on Monday. This represents a day-on-day gain of N17.45.

Nigerian  Newssphere reports that the latest appreciation ranks among the highest since October 2, 2024, when the apex bank introduced the Electronic Foreign Exchange Matching System to improve transparency and liquidity in the FX market.

The naira also strengthened at the parallel market, appreciating to about N1,460 per dollar on Tuesday from around N1,470 the previous day.

The gains recorded at both the official and black markets come amid an improvement in Nigeria’s external reserves, which rose to $46.59 billion as of February 2, 2026, from $46.28 billion at the end of January.

Recall that the naira had weakened against the dollar at the official market on Monday before staging the latest recovery.

US explains deployment of Troops to Nigeria

0

The United States military has explained the rationale behind the deployment of its forces to Nigeria, describing it as part of expanded cooperation between Washington and Abuja to tackle terrorism and other security threats in the country.

Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Dagvin R. M. Anderson, made this known on Tuesday during a briefing with journalists. He said both Nigeria and the United States had agreed on the need for closer military collaboration to strengthen counter-terrorism efforts.

According to Anderson, the renewed cooperation follows directives from US President Donald Trump, who in December ordered airstrikes on what he described as Islamic State targets in Nigeria, adding that further US military action could follow if necessary.

While declining to disclose the exact size and mission details of the deployed personnel, Anderson described the force as a small contingent equipped with “unique capabilities” from the United States.

“This has led to increased collaboration between our nations, including a small US team that brings some unique capabilities from the United States,” he said.

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, also confirmed that a US military team is currently operating in the country but did not provide additional details about its activities.

Rivers: Why Tinubu will always place Wike ahead of Fubara—Lawyer

0

A legal practitioner and human rights activist, Festus Ogwuche, has said President Bola Tinubu is likely to place the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, at an advantage in the ongoing political crisis with the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

Ogwuche made the assertion on Tuesday during an interview on Prime Time, a program on Arise Television.

According to him, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara should have been more strategic and diplomatic in his political decisions, particularly regarding his alleged move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The lawyer argued that Governor Fubara may have underestimated the depth of the relationship between President Tinubu and Wike.

“Fubara should have been a little more calculative and diplomatic, considering what he is going through now. This suggests that he does not quite understand the depth of the relationship between Wike and President Tinubu,” Ogwuche said.

He added that the bond between the President and the former Rivers governor goes beyond a typical godfather-godson relationship.

“Wike and Tinubu’s relationship goes far beyond that. It runs deeper, with certain undercurrents that many cannot fully grasp. In this crisis, the President will always place Wike at an advantage,” he stated.

Ogwuche further noted that extraordinary measures had already been taken to position Wike favorably in the political standoff, insisting that the FCT minister would continue to enjoy the president’s backing as the Rivers crisis unfolds.
