NIMC announces date to begin nationwide ward-level NIN enrollment

0

The National Identity Management Commission has announced February 16th, 2026, as the date to officially begin ward-level National Identity Number enrollment across Nigeria.

Kayode Adegoke,Head of corporate communications, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement noted that the nationwide exercise is designed to ensure the comprehensive registration of every Nigerian citizen and legal resident, including children and adults, into the National Identity Database.

“The enrollment will be conducted free of charge, in furtherance of the Federal Government’s renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), aimed at promoting inclusive governance, national development, and access to identity services.

“The ward-level enrolment initiative represents a strategic step towards deepening identity inclusion, decentralizing services, and bringing registration to the ward level (communities), thereby improving accessibility, reducing travel burden, and promoting nationwide participation.

“NIMC encourages all Nigerians and legal residents who are yet to enroll to take advantage of this opportunity and participate fully in the exercise.

“To this end, the Commission has started engaging stakeholders at the national, state, and local government levels with sensitization and awareness campaigns on the importance of, benefits of, and use of NIN. “State governments, heads of local governments, traditional rulers, community leaders, and market associations, as well as faith-based organizations, are being consulted to ensure a smooth and seamless registration across all the wards nationwide. Members of the public are hereby encouraged to come out en masse to take advantage of this ward-to-ward enrollment exercise to enroll their children, parents, wards, and family members within their community,” the statement reads.

Electoral act: Akpabio and his ‘Hallelujah boys’ have finished Nigeria—Adeyanju

0

Activist lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio and some members of the National Assembly, whom he described as “hallelujah boys,” accusing them of successfully pushing through what he termed an “evil plan” to allow the manual transmission of election results.

Adeyanju made the remarks while reacting to the reported adoption of manual transmission of results, a move he alleged threatens the integrity of recent electoral reforms in Nigeria.

Commenting after the conclusion of the Occupy National Assembly protest, the lawyer warned that permitting manual transmission could undermine transparency in the electoral process and reverse key gains achieved through years of reform efforts.

In a post on X, Adeyanju expressed deep concern that the development could erode public trust in elections and weaken confidence in the democratic system.

“So the protest is over despite the fact that Akpabio and his Hallelujah boys succeeded with their evil plans of manual transmission of results. Na wa ooo,” he wrote.

He added, “If manual transmission is in the Electoral Act as an option, then Akpabio & his Hallelujah boys in NASS have finished Nigeria.

“It’s all over. All the electoral reform gains were reversed just like that.”

Adeyanju’s comments have further fueled public debate over electoral processes and the role of the National Assembly in safeguarding democratic reforms.

20 Million Nigerians to gain improved internet, digital services access in 2027—Tijani

0

The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, ’Bosun Tijani, has said about 20 million Nigerians currently without access to internet and digital services will begin to experience significant improvements from 2027, as major infrastructure projects come on stream.

Tijani disclosed this during an interview with journalists at the Flagship Nigeria event held in Abuja on Wednesday, where he reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding digital access and strengthening the foundation of Nigeria’s digital economy.

According to the minister, no African country is presently investing in digital infrastructure at the scale Nigeria is undertaking, describing the effort as central to the nation’s economic transformation agenda.

He revealed that Nigeria is investing in a 90,000-kilometer fiber optic network—the largest of its kind on the continent—with support from the World Bank. In addition, the government is procuring two new communication satellites and deploying 3,700 additional telecommunications towers in rural areas, initiatives expected to connect about 20 million Nigerians who currently lack basic connectivity.

“There is no country in Africa today that is investing in digital infrastructure as deeply as Nigeria,” Tijani said. He added that recent policy measures, including tariff reviews in the telecommunications sector, have helped restore industry profitability and attracted over $1 billion in private investment.

The minister stressed, however, that infrastructure development must go hand in hand with digital skills and literacy. He explained that the government has distinguished between advanced technical skills and basic digital literacy, citing the Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program launched in 2023, which has so far trained more than 150,000 young Nigerians.

Tijani also disclosed plans to roll out a nationwide digital literacy program using mobile technology and local languages. As part of this initiative, he said Nigeria has developed Africa’s first government-backed large language model, capable of communicating in Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, and accented English. He noted that the innovation would form the backbone of digital literacy training for Nigerians of all ages.

Providing an update on satellite projects, the minister said Nigeria’s existing communication satellite has become obsolete, adding that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the procurement of new ones. He said the satellites would be crucial in connecting hard-to-reach areas and enhancing national security.

Tijani stated that fiber deployment is expected to begin between the second and third quarters of this year, while the new satellites should become operational by next year.

Also speaking at the event, Chief Executive Officer of the Partnership for Digital Access in Africa (PDA), Ibrahima Guimba-Saidou, said the program aligns with Africa’s ambition to connect one billion people to the internet by 2030.

He commended Nigeria for its clear strategy and large-scale investments in connectivity, devices, and digital skills, while noting that electricity remains a major gap in achieving full digital inclusion. Guimba-Saidou explained that PDA’s Mission 300 initiative focuses on expanding electricity access to remote areas so communities, schools, health centers, and markets can fully benefit from digital services.

“This is about making connectivity relevant to the people who need it the most, not just those in major cities,” he said, calling for stronger collaboration between government and the private sector to bridge the digital divide.

In his remarks, World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Mathew Verghis, said Nigeria faces some of the world’s largest deficits in electricity access and backbone infrastructure but also has enormous growth potential driven by its population.

Verghis stressed that digital inclusion requires reliable power supply, broadband connectivity, and affordable devices working together. He called for coordinated planning, construction, and financing of power and fiber infrastructure to reduce costs and accelerate universal access.

“There is no digital inclusion without power, and no inclusive growth from electrification without connectivity,” he said, adding that the World Bank is ready to support federal and state governments, as well as private sector partners, to turn the vision of integrated power and broadband access into reality for millions of Nigerians.

Several persons dead after mass shooting at Canadian high school

0

At least ten people, including the suspected shooter, have been confirmed dead following a shooting at a high school in western Canada, marking one of the country’s deadliest mass casualty incidents in recent years.

The attack occurred on Tuesday at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, where police said the assailant opened fire, killing several people. Authorities later found the suspect dead inside the school.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said six victims were discovered within the school premises. Two others were found dead at a residence believed to be linked to the incident, while another victim died while being transported to the hospital.

Police added that at least two people were hospitalized with serious or life-threatening injuries, while up to 25 others received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators confirmed that there are no additional suspects and assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.

Authorities released limited details about the attacker, describing the suspect as female. An earlier active shooter alert had identified a “female in a dress with brown hair.” Police Superintendent Ken Floyd later confirmed that the individual described in the alert was the same person found dead inside the school.

Officials have not disclosed a motive for the attack and did not specify how many of the victims were students.

The shooting took place in Tumbler Ridge, a remote community of about 2,400 residents, located roughly 1,155 kilometers northeast of Vancouver in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

British Columbia Premier David Eby expressed sympathy for those affected by the tragedy.

“It’s hard to know what to say on a night like tonight. It’s the kind of thing that feels like it happens in other places and not close to home,” he told reporters.

Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, which serves about 160 students from grades seven through 12, has been closed for the remainder of the week. School officials said counseling services would be provided to students and staff as the community begins the process of healing.

You’re crying because ordinary businessmen aligned—Cubana Chief Priest slams Isaac Fayose

0

Celebrity businessman and socialite Pascal Okechukwu, widely known as Cubana Chief Priest, has publicly taken aim at social commentator Isaac Fayose following criticism over his political alignment.

Cubana Chief Priest, in a series of strongly worded Instagram posts, responded to remarks allegedly made by Fayose questioning his decision to associate with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Defending his stance, the entrepreneur said his choice was driven by pragmatism, stressing that as a businessman who employs over 1,000 people, collaboration with the government is more beneficial than opposition.

“Over 30 governors align, and you are crying because an ordinary businessman aligned? Power pass power,” he wrote.

He also challenged Fayose to a public discussion on business, questioning the origin of Fayose’s wealth while referencing the eight-year governorship tenure of Fayose’s brother.

“You want me to negotiate the release of Nnamdi Kanu by being in opposition? I have chosen my path in business and politics,” he stated.

The socialite went on to reaffirm his loyalty to President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, expressing optimism about the president’s political trajectory.

“As for me and my family, we have decided to stay with the moving train, Renewed Hope,” he said.

Cubana Chief Priest further highlighted his investments in hospitality and real estate, particularly within his home community, noting that his ventures have contributed to job creation and economic growth.

He accused Fayose of acting out of jealousy and attempting to lure him into political opposition, insisting that he is “not an activist” but a businessman committed to expansion, development, and strategic partnerships.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that Fayose slammed Igbos as the most greediest Nigerians.

Fayose stirs controversy after revealing greediest people in Nigeria

0

Isaac Fayose, the younger brother of a former governor of Ekiti State, has drawn criticism following comments he made about the Igbo ethnic group and prominent business figures from the South-East.

Speaking at a meeting of the Kayhikers Club in Abuja, Isaac accused some wealthy Igbo individuals of prioritizing personal interests over collective concerns. He questioned why influential businessmen, including socialite and entrepreneur Obi Cubana, had not leveraged their access to the political establishment to seek a political resolution to the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Isaac alleged that many Igbo men who display wealth on social media do not genuinely use their influence to support causes affecting their people. He argued that true selflessness, rather than public displays of affluence, was necessary to help others.

In his remarks, he referenced various security and political issues across the country, contrasting the responses of activists and community leaders in different regions. He maintained that those with access to power should engage authorities through dialogue rather than confrontation to address grievances such as Kanu’s detention.

Last night I think the Igbos were angry with me. I’m so sorry my children are Igbos; I went to Anambra for my win carrying. I’m a born polygamist with two wives—one white and one Black. The Black one is from Anambra, so I’m partly Igbo.

“Igbos are the greediest Nigerians you can ever meet. We have activists in Nigeria; we have a guy called Sunday Igboho; we have bandits chasing us from the North, and you see one man called Gumi saying no, they need money, and it’s because there is no education.

“There is another guy called Nnamdi Kanu; where is he? He’s in Sokoto, and your brother Obi Cubana is wearing the mandate that they can’t use the political power to negotiate and bring their brother out.

“I didn’t say that they should fight, but they are at the corridor of power. You give me this, and you release my brother, and I don’t know their source of wealth. They are oppressors; the moment you have decided to be selfless, you are able to help others.”

The comments have since generated reactions, particularly from members of the Igbo community, with many describing the remarks as divisive and unfair.

Men responsible for 95% of failed marriages—Uche Ogbodo

0

Popular Nollywood actress Uche Ogbodo has expressed her views on the leading causes of marital breakdown, placing much of the blame on men.

According to the actress, men account for about 95 percent of failed marriages, citing neglect, infidelity, betrayal, and emotional abuse as major factors responsible for divorces.

Ogbodo shared her opinion via her Instagram page, where she wrote, “Men contribute 95 percent in failed marriages. Many marriages fail because a significant number of men neglect, cheat on, devalue, emotionally harm, emotionally stress, or betray their wives.”

She further noted that a lack of accountability in relationships and society at large has continued to encourage such behavior.

Uche Ogbodo is currently in her second marriage. She tied the knot with her partner, Boby Maris, in October 2023. Her first marriage to Norway-based football agent, Ato Ubby, ended barely a year after it was contracted in 2013.
