New Tax Laws: Nigerians distrust Tinubu Govt’s use of taxes—Financial Analyst, Kalu Aja

Financial analyst Kalu Aja has said Nigerians’ opposition to the newly enacted tax laws is rooted in a deep lack of trust in the federal government’s ability to manage public funds transparently.

Aja made the assertion in a post on X on Friday, reacting to the ongoing controversy surrounding the tax reforms recently signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

His comments came shortly after the Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, reiterated that implementation of the new tax laws would commence on January 1, 2026, despite widespread criticism.

According to Aja, Nigerians are unconvinced that tax revenues would be prudently spent for public benefit, noting that the extravagant lifestyles of public officials have further fueled public skepticism.

He also faulted the lack of transparency surrounding the tax laws, arguing that citizens have not been adequately informed about the content and administration of the reforms.

Aja further alleged that successive Nigerian governments have failed to use tax revenues in ways that significantly improve citizens’ lives.

“The issue is trust. Nigerians don’t trust the government with the power to spend their taxes properly on their behalf,” he wrote on X.

“Between the National Assembly and the Presidency, we don’t even have a credible copy of the tax bill, yet Nigerians are expected to pay these taxes. The taxes Nigerians have already paid—how were they spent?

“If you want Western-style taxes, then there must be Western-style transparency,” Aja added.

Nigerian Newsphere recalls that a member of the House of Representatives, Abdulsamman Dasuki, recently raised concerns over alleged alterations to the country’s tax laws, reigniting controversy around the reforms.

Following the allegations, the National Assembly, in an update on Friday, directed that the tax laws be re-gazetted to address the concerns raised.
