0

He captioned the video, “We joined APC for the sake of Nigerians, now that all is not looking straight. We have to acknowledge that only Allah is the Guarantor and Grantor of Power and Authority. He never ever give up on the betterment of human, why should I ever.

“Trusting in Him, following His Guide, we bow out of APC honorably and in peace. The flag is now down.”

Senate amends electoral act to allow NASS members, Governors, other ‘elected delegates’ vote at party congresses, primaries

0

Few weeks to party primaries, the Senate on Tuesday amended the Electoral Act, 2022, to allow National Assembly members, President, Vice President, Governors and other ‘statutory delegates’, all those elected to participate and vote in the conventions, congresses, or meetings of political parties, this is coming months after rejecting President Buhari’s request to amend section 84(12) barring political appointees from voting in the same circumstances.

This followed the expeditious consideration of a bill during plenary which scaled first, second and third readings, respectively, and was passed by the lawmakers after consideration by the Committee of the Whole.

Those identified as ‘statutory delegates’ include the President, Vice President, members of the National Assembly, governors and their deputies, members of the State Houses of Assembly, chairmen of councils, councillors, and national working committee of political parties, amongst others.

In his presentation, the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, who sponsored the ‘Bill to amend the 2022 Electoral Act No. 13,’ said it seeks to amend the provision of Section 84(8) of the law.

According to him, the provision of the section “does not provide for the participation of what is generally known as ‘statutory delegates’ in the conventions, congresses or meetings of political parties.”

“The extant section only clearly provides for the participation of elected delegates in the conventions, congresses, or meetings of political parties held to nominate candidates of political parties.

“This is an unintended error, and we can only correct it with this amendment now before us”, the Deputy Senate President said.

In his remarks after the bill was passed, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, said the amendment became imperative in view of the deficiency created by the provision of section 84(8) of the extant Act.

“The amended Electoral Act of 2022 that we passed this year had a deficiency that was never intended, and that deficiency will deny all statutory delegates in all political parties from participation in congresses and conventions.
“And, therefore, such a major and unintended clause has to be amended before the party primaries start in the next eight days. This is emergency legislation, so to speak.  Our expectation is that the National Assembly – the two chambers – would finish with the processing of this amendment of this bill, between today (in the Senate) and tomorrow (in the House of Representatives), and then the Executive will do the assent.”

The Senate President added, “That is so important to enable every statutory delegate to participate in the party primaries right from the beginning that will start on the 18th of May, 2022. So, this is an emergency effort to ensure that nobody is denied his or her rightful opportunity as a delegate, especially the statutory delegates, and these are those who are elected.

“These are the President, Vice President, members of the National Assembly, governors, members of the State Houses of Assembly, chairmen of councils and their councillors, national working committee members of all the political parties, and so on.

“This is a fundamental effort to ensure that we address this within the week, so that by next week, the Electoral Act, 2022 (amended version), will be very salutary for us to start our party primaries.”

Recall that the National Assembly refused to amend President Muhammadu Buhari request to amend Section 84(12) barring all political appointees such as Ministers, Aides from voting or be voted during elections, parties primaries, conventions.

For clarity, Section 84(10-13) of the amended Electoral Act say it:

It says: “No political appointee at any level shall be a voting delegate or be voted for at the Convention or Congress of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election.

“Where a political party fails to comply with the provisions of this Act in the conduct of its primaries, its candidate for election shall not be included in the election for the particular position in issue.

“Notwithstanding the provisions of this Act or rules of a political party, an aspirant who complains that any of the provisions of this Act and the guidelines of a political party have not been complied with in the selection or nomination of a candidate of a political party for election, may apply to the Federal High Court for redress.

“Nothing in this section shall empower the Courts to stop the holding of primaries or general elections under this Act pending the determination of a suit.”

Elon Musk okays reversal of Donald Trump’s Twitter ban

0

Elon Musk has said if his bid to buy Twitter sail through, he will reverse Donald Trump’s ban from the platform.

The richest man in the world agreed a $44bn (£34.5bn) takeover bid with the Twitter board last month.

But he said it was not a done deal and that ideally it would be completed in the next two to three months.

Twitter’s decision to ban the former US president was “morally wrong and flat-out stupid”, Mr Musk told the Financial Times Future of the Car summit.

In January 2021, Twitter said Mr Trump’s account was ” permanently suspended… due to the risk of further incitement of violence” following the storming of the Capitol.

But the Tesla owner said: “I would reverse the permanent ban but I don’t own Twitter yet so this is not a thing that will definitely happen.”

He said the ban had not silenced Mr Trump, but by making him move onto his own Truth Social site, it had amplified his voice among the far right.

He pointed out that Mr Trump had previously said he would not return to Twitter even if his account was reinstated.

Jonathan, Emefiele presidential aspirations and the reoccurring fuel scarcity in Abuja

0

Majority of Nigerians still struggle to understand the political gimmick of the ruling All Progressives Party(APC) following the presidential aspirations bazaar with over 21 aspirants including Former President Goodluck Jonathan, Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele after different Groups picked the Party’s presidential tickets for the Duo on Monday.

This is coming as long fuel queues have resurfaced in Abuja with it accompanied pains, suffering on the part of Nigerians. It came after few weeks of short-lived respite, following more than three months of grueling petrol scarcity nationwide which the Nigerian National Petroleum Company attributed to off-spec fuel at one time, then Ukraine-Russian crisis at another time.

However, in the context of this recent resurfacing queues, NNPC in a statement blamed the last Muslim Sallah holiday for the situation.

Since the long lines begun on Friday, it has become overtly labourous for motorists to go about their activities in the City as the scar of traffic mars business activities.

While adequate solution is yet to be provided to the fuel situation which affect majority of Nigerians, the aspiration of Goodluck Jonathan has now moved from ‘mere speculation’ to actual reality yesterday when a group called Normadi Pastoralists and the Almajiri Communites led by one Ibrahim Abdullahi allegedly bought APC’s N100million presidential form for the former President.

Amid the confusion surrounding Jonathan’s presidential bid, his media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze in a statement on Monday further compounded matter when he said, despite the purported purchase of form for his principal, “We wish to categorically state that Dr Jonathan was not aware of this bid and did not authorize it”.

When asked by Journalists to comment on Jonathan’s exit from PDP and he(Jonathan) was with the National Chairman of APC, Abdullahi Adamu on Monday, he said said “No comment”, with a lot left unsaid.

Outside Jonathan’s matter, the Governor of CBN, Emefiele aspiration has continued to raise so much dust, confusion within the political, economic environments.

Both economic experts, civil societies, lawyers have aulted Emefiele’s involvement in Politics, saying it is unhealthy for the Nigeria’s democracy and economy.

Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo said Independent Electoral Commission(INEC)’s failure failure to review its partnership with CBN regarding warehousing sensitive electoral materials could jeopardise its credibility and public trust.

In a similar manner, National Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Bar Association, Dr Rapulu Nduka also toed the line of Itodo.

Meanwhile, in reaction to the emerging development, the Chief Secretary to INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi in the statement stated that the Commission would take action concerning sensitive materials being keep in the custody of CBN during elections.

In all of this happening, INEC, stakeholders should take notice of emerging challenges and protect the Nigerian electoral system’s integrity if there is any. This is more important as the world at large watch with keen interest happenings leading to 2023 presidential elections.

No going back on planned grounding of Aviation sector says Nigerian Airline Operators

0

…We won’t take part- Ibom Air

Barely two months after 100 per cent increment of domestic airfares, the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) on Sunday said they are not backing down on its decision to suspend operations in response to the astronomic and continuously rising cost of JetA1 despite various interventions in the last 24 hours.

In a statement jointly signed by Shehu Wada – Executive Director, Max Air,  Dr. Obiora Okonkwo – Chairman, United Nigeria Airlines, Barr. Allen Onyema, Chairman, Air Peace, Capt. Roy Ilegbodu – CEO, Arik Air, Capt. Abdullahi Mahmood – CEO, Aero Contractors, Faisal Abdulmunaf – MD, Azman Air
and Mr. Sukh Mann – Deputy CEO, Dana Air insist that they are patriotic citizens and are doing all to protect the flying public and the nation at large.

“In the light of frantic developments within the last twenty-four hours since informing the general public of our decision to suspend operations in response to the astronomic and continuously rising cost of JetA1, the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) would like to state unequivocally that we stand firmly by
our decision.

“Airline operators are patriotic citizens and we are doing all we can to protect the flying public contrary to what some subjective schools of thought might suggest. This is a collective sacrifice for the common interest of our nation”, the statement read in parts.

However,  Ibom Airlines in a statement released on Saturday said it will not join the planned shutdown of flights announced by the Airlines Operators of Nigeria (AON), Ibom Airlines said obligations to its customers, suppliers and staff, would not allow it to participate in the shutdown.

AON, in its response, however, “regrets the unfortunate position taken by one of our members, Ibom Air, not to stand by the collective decision. While they may have their reasons for doing what they did, it is pertinent to note that they equally accepted in their statement that the JetA1 situation poses an “existential threat to the air transport industry in Nigeria” and that “the out-of-control situation is simply unsustainable.

“May we use this medium to clearly state that; “Airlines are not on strike. We are private investors who do not run our airlines with public funds to be able to continue to pay upfront in cash at N700 per litre for JetA1 which has increased our cost on daily basis to about 95%.

“This is totally unsustainable. And its consequences, if allowed to stay, will be borne by the passengers; which is what we are trying to prevent”.

The Airline Operators called for calm while trying to find a lasting solution to the crisis.

“To this end, therefore, we remain resolute in our resolve to find a lasting solution to this crucial problem of national emergency and once again use this medium to appeal to the conscience of our esteemed passengers for their understanding”, the statement added.

NCC allays Subscribers’ fears on service providers’ agitation for 40% tariff increase

0

..Says no tariff hike without recourse to empirical studies

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has monitored with keen interest the deluge of reports in the media on the demand by Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) ostensibly to increase tariffs of telecom services and has taken notes of the fears being expressed by telecom subscribers on the agitation.

The demand being made by MNOs under the auspices of the Associatoon of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), citing high cost of running their operations as the major reason for their proposed tariff hike, is contained in a letter to the Commission.

Consistent with international best practice and established regulatory procedures, the NCC ensures its regulatory activities are guided by regular cost-based and empirical studies to determine appropriate cost (upper and floor price) within which service providers are allowed to charge their subscribers for services delivered.

The Commission ensures that any cost determined, as an outcome of such transparent studies is fair enough as to enhance healthy competition among operators, provide wider choices for the subscribers as well as ensure sustainability of the Nigerian telecoms industry.

For the avoidance of any doubt, and contrary to MNOs’ agitation to increase tariffs for voice and Short Messaging Services (SMS) by a certain percentage, the Commission wishes to categorically inform telecoms subscribers and allay the fears of Nigerians that no tariff increase will be effected by the operators without due regulatory approval by the Commission.

It is noteworthy that tariff regulations and determinations are made by the Commission in line with the provisions of Sections 4, 90 and 92 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003, which entrusts the Commission with the protection and promotion of the interests of subscribers against unfair practices including but not limited to; matters relating to tariffs and charges.

The current tarriff regime being administered by the service providers is a product of NCC’s determination both for voice and SMS in the past.

However, while there could be justifiable reasons for MNOs’ demand for tarrif increase, it should be noted that they are not allowed to do such either individually or collectively without recourse to NCC, following the outcome of a cost study. This is not the case for now.

Through NCC’s commitment to engendering healthy competition among the licensees, the cost of services has been democratised and become more and more affordable for Nigerian subscribers. The regulator is even more committed to this cause to ensure subscribers get greater value for money spent on telecom services.

Newssphere earlier reported that MNOs said it would soon increase price of data, voice and messages due to rising operational cost.

Knocks trail CBN governor, Emefiele’s picking of APC N100m presidential form

…Emefiele handed CBN control to Buhari seven years ago, Ezekwesili alleges

…Sack Emefiele now lawyer tells Buhari

Knocks have continued to trail Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN), Godwin Emefiele picking of All Progressives Congress Party’s N100m Presidential form on Friday.

As Former Nigeria’s former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, A human rights lawyer, Festus Ogun have become the latest critiques of the Emefiele venture into politics.

Sixty-year-old Emefiele was appointed the CBN governor in 2014 and has since remained at the apex bank. Under him, the naira has wobbled against the dollar and now exchanges at N560/$1 from around N150/$1 when he came into office.

In February, while reacting to the controversy around his interest in the much-coveted seat, Emefiele  reportedly said he would leave his fate firmly in the hands of God.

However, Section 9 of the CBN Act, 2007 stated clearly that the apex bank governor must not venture into any other vocation while in office and must resign in writing to the President if he nursed such intention.

It read, “The Governor and the Deputy Governors shall devote the whole of their time to the service of the bank and while holding office shall not engage in any full or part-time employment or vocation whether remunerated or not except such personal or charitable causes as may be determined by the Board and which do not conflict with or detract from their full-time duties…”

2023: Nigeria’s vault no longer safe, sack Emefiele now, lawyer tells Buhari

A human rights lawyer, Festus Ogun, has called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to urgently sack the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.
The lawyer made the call in response to a report that the All Progressives Congress Expression of Interest and Nomination forms have been purchased for Emefiele to contest the 2023 presidential election by his supporters.

A coalition comprising Rice Farmers Association, Emefiele Support Group and Friends of Godwin on Friday reportedly obtained the forms for him.
The CBN governor had denied having an interest in the presidency but has yet to speak on the collection of forms.

Ogun expressed fear that the treasury of Nigeria is no longer safe in the hands of Emefiele.

He said, “CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has picked the  APC N100m presidential nomination and expression of interest form. Clearly, this is illegal, morally reprehensible and weakens whatever is left of our institutions.

“Section 9 of the CBN Act, 2007 provides that ‘the governor and the deputy governors shall devote the whole of their time to the service of the bank, and while holding office, shall not engage in any full or part-time employment or vocation, whether remunerated or not’.

“Politics is a vocation and the CBN Governor is not allowed by law to engage in partisan politics. It is unthinkable that Emefiele, despite his embarrassing failures, will disregard law and morality to vie for President under the ruling APC. Our national vault is no longer safe.

“Mr. Godwin Emefelie must immediately resign his position as CBN Governor to save our country from this unthinkable absurdity. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) must immediately commence thorough investigation into Emefiele’s period in office.

“Finally, I call on President Muhammadu Buhari to invoke his statutory powers under Section 11(2) of the CBN Act to sack Emefiele. The National Assembly and civil society organizations are equally enjoined to intervene in this peculiar institutional desecration. All is not well.”

…Emefiele handed CBN control to Buhari seven years ago, Ezekwesili alleges

Nigeria’s former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has alleged that the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, handed over the apex bank’s control to the President, Muhammadu Buhari  since the latter assumed office.

She also alleged that the “ill-advised monetary policies” of the bank in the last seven years were “political”.

Ezekwesili’s allegations followed the reports that Emefiele picked the All Progressives Congress N100m presidential nomination and expression of interest form. He reportedly picked up the form on Friday in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The former minister in a series of tweets on her Twitter handle on Friday said the wrong monetary policies since Buhari assumed office in 2015 were testament that the bank had handed over its independence to the President.

She alleged that the hidden politics behind the wrong monetary policies and alleged control of the CBN by Buhari led to Emefiele’s open partisan politics.

She wrote, “If you did not know all along that Nigeria’s serial wrong and ill-advised Monetary Policies of the last 7 years were political because the @cenbank long handed its independence to the Villa @NGRPresident @MBuhari , at least now you know. They’ve outed themselves. Finally.”
Ezekwesili, however, asked the CBN governor to resign from his position and pursue his “ill-fated political career”.

In the last two-months it has been gale of aspirations by political gladiators from APC and People’s Democratic Party.

At the moment the APC already has over 21 presidential aspirants who have picked forms while PDP has 15 aspirants. No doubt the Nigeria Political environment is saturated with signposts of interests eyeing the Nation’s number seat come 2023.
