Buhari, SGF signatures forged in $6.2m fraud Ccase against Emefiele- EFCC

0

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday told a Federal Capital Territory High Court that the signatures of late President Muhammadu Buhari and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Boss Mustapha were forged in a scheme used to allegedly divert $6.23 million from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Testifying as the 13th prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele, EFCC official Chinedu Eneanya said investigations showed the funds were released under the pretext of paying foreign election observers for the 2023 general elections.

According to him, five CBN officials authorized the disbursement, while forensic analysis confirmed that the signatures attributed to Buhari and Mustapha were not genuine. He added that documents relating to the transaction were recovered during the probe.

Emefiele is facing a 20-count amended charge bordering on criminal breach of trust, forgery, abuse of office, conspiracy, and obtaining money by false pretenses. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

During cross-examination, defense counsel Mathew Burkaa, SAN, highlighted that no forensic examination was conducted on Emefiele’s signature, despite his claim that it was also forged. The witness further admitted he did not establish that Emefiele personally received any of the funds.

He also confirmed that the five CBN officials linked to the transaction are not standing trial but were only suspended by the bank.

Proceedings saw a dispute over the prosecution’s witnesses, with the defense accusing the EFCC of delaying tactics and seeking to have its case closed if remaining witnesses fail to appear.

Prosecution counsel Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, however, urged the court not to shut out the remaining witnesses, noting they were yet to be served subpoenas and are currently outside the court’s jurisdiction.

Justice Hamza Muazu directed the prosecution to produce all outstanding witnesses by April 28 and adjourned the case for continuation of trial.

Court bars Journalists from alleged coup plotters’ bail hearing

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday barred journalists from covering the bail proceedings of six individuals accused of plotting a coup against the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Courtroom reporters were asked to leave shortly before the presiding judge, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, commenced proceedings, with security operatives said to be enforcing the directive.

Journalists present complied and exited the courtroom.

The development comes amid growing public attention surrounding the case involving the six defendants, who were arraigned last Wednesday by the federal government over an alleged failed coup.

The accused persons include retired Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana; retired Navy Captain Erasmus Victor; Police Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim; Presidential Villa electrician Zekeri Umoru; as well as Bukar Goni and Abdulkadir Sani, an Islamic cleric based in Zaria.

EPL: Scholes explains why Manchester City will beat Arsenal to win premier league title

0

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes said Manchester City still hold the advantage in the Premier League title race ahead of Arsenal.

Arsenal closed the gap to three points after a 1-0 win over Newcastle United, although City have a game in hand.

Scholes pointed to three key factors—experience, mentality, and the influence of manager Pep Guardiola—as decisive.

“All eyes are on Arsenal in this title race, and to be fair, they’re giving everything.

“They’ve pushed it all the way and stayed right in the fight with Manchester City.

“But when it gets to this stage, the small details decide everything.

“City have the experience, the mentality, and a serial winner in Pep Guardiola who knows exactly how to close out a title race.

“With Arsenal, there are still questions. Do they have enough firepower? Do they have that ruthless edge in the final moments when it matters most? Because that’s what separates contenders from champions.”

2027: Makinde is desperate for VP slot with Atiku—Wike’s spokesperson

Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of aggressively pursuing a vice-presidential position ahead of future elections.

Olayinka claimed that Makinde’s alleged desperation follows his diminished influence within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alleging that the governor has resorted to inflammatory rhetoric.

In a post shared on X, Olayinka described Makinde as “politically isolated,” warning against statements he said could incite unrest. He further alleged that the governor was seeking to revive a culture of political violence reminiscent of the South-West’s “Operation Wetie” era of the 1960s.

According to Olayinka, Makinde failed in several political efforts within the state and the party, including attempts to consolidate control of the PDP and influence key traditional and political processes in Oyo State.

He also questioned the handling of funds reportedly allocated for victims of the Bodija explosion in Ibadan, alleging that the governor had yet to provide a full account of the money.

Olayinka further claimed that Makinde is now turning to alternative political platforms in pursuit of a vice-presidential ticket, warning that any call for violence by public office holders carries serious consequences.

Trump restores US federal executions, approves firing squads amid shooting at White House dinner

0

The administration of president Donald Trump has announced the restoration of federal executions in the United States, authorizing the Department of Justice (DoJ) to carry out capital sentences once death-row inmates have exhausted all appeals.

The move comes amid heightened security concerns following an armed attack near a White House dinner, which officials say underscores the need for tougher criminal justice measures.

Under the new directive, the DoJ will reinstate the lethal injection protocol used during Trump’s first term and expand execution methods to include firing squads. The administration also plans to streamline internal procedures to accelerate the handling of death penalty cases.

Officials argue that the policy shift is necessary to deter violent crimes, ensure justice for victims, and provide closure for affected families. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the decision follows a presidential directive to prioritize capital punishment in appropriate cases and to carry out sentences without unnecessary delays.

Blanche criticized the previous administration led by Joe Biden, accusing it of weakening the justice system by limiting the use of the death penalty. He also faulted former Attorney General Merrick Garland for policies that commuted the sentences of most federal death-row inmates without consulting victims’ families.

In December 2024, Biden commuted the sentences of 37 out of 40 federal death-row inmates to life imprisonment, leaving only three cases untouched, including those linked to the Boston Marathon bombing and the Tree of Life synagogue shooting.

The Trump administration has now rescinded the Biden-era moratorium on federal executions and authorized prosecutors to seek death sentences in 44 pending cases. Blanche has already approved capital punishment proceedings for nine defendants, including alleged members of the MS-13 gang accused of killing a federal witness.

Additionally, the Federal Bureau of Prisons has been instructed to reinstate execution protocols involving pentobarbital and to prepare for the use of firing squads where applicable. The DoJ also plans to restrict clemency petitions by death-row inmates until their appeals and initial legal challenges have been fully resolved.

Since the federal death penalty was reinstated in 1988, the U.S. government has carried out 16 executions—three under George W. Bush and 13 during Trump’s first term between July 2020 and January.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that Trump, others evacuated from White House after a man attacked a Washington dinner.

Nigerian senator Lamido dumps APC, set to join ADC

The senator representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, Ibrahim Lamido, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing a prolonged internal crisis within the party in Sokoto State.

In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to the APC Chairman of Isa South Ward in the Isa Local Government Area, Lamido said his decision followed deep concerns over the party’s leadership and internal divisions in the state.

He noted that the move was not taken lightly but became necessary due to what he described as ongoing leadership disputes, mistrust, and an unfair style of party management that made it difficult for him to remain.

According to the lawmaker, persistent divisions, lack of cohesion, and unresolved conflicts have undermined the unity and progress the party once represented in Sokoto State.

Lamido expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve within the APC, wishing the party success in resolving its challenges and rebuilding unity.

Meanwhile, indications suggest the senator is set to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as he prepares to continue his political career under a new platform.

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has expressed appreciation to former Blanco, Texas, mayor Mike Arnold for his public support.

Kanu’s message was disclosed on Saturday by his legal counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, via a post on X.

Arnold had earlier criticized the Nigerian government, questioning Kanu’s continued detention while an Islamic cleric accused of placing a N1 million bounty on a pastor allegedly remains free. He described the situation as troubling and indicative of deeper national concerns.

Responding, Kanu thanked Arnold for what he described as a courageous effort to highlight the truth about him and the IPOB movement. He noted that such support was significant, adding that he often reflected on how events might have unfolded differently if more individuals had spoken out earlier.

In his message, Kanu assured Arnold of his backing, stating that both he and IPOB stand in solidarity with him, while also offering prayers for his well-being.

Kanu, who has been at the center of legal and political controversy, was sentenced to life imprisonment in November 2025 over terrorism-related charges
