Veteran Nollywood actor, Taiwo Adeshina professionally known as Elegbeje Ado, is dead.
 
Elegbeje Ado who is also a pastor, died on Monday June 29 2026 after a brief illness.
 
The founder of Best of Nollywood Awards, Seun Oloketuyi, confirmed his passage in an Instagram post on Tuesday.
 
He wrote “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Pastor Taiwo Adeshina, a beloved Nollywood legend.
 
“Your remarkable contributions to Yoruba movie industry and the lives you touched will never be forgotten. May God grant you eternal rest and comfort your family, friends, and fans. Rest in peace, legend”, he wrote.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, Kayode Are, has said President Bola Tinubu could visit the US before the end of his tenure as ambassador.

Are noted that any presidential visit would depend on Tinubu’s schedule and other contingencies, expressing optimism that the trip could also provide an opportunity for the Nigerian leader to meet US President Donald Trump.

Cybercrimes case: Court grants Sowore freedom with stringent bail conditions

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted activist Omoyele Sowore bail in the sum of N200 million over the cybercrime charges filed against him.

Justice Mohammed Umar, who delivered the ruling on Monday, ordered Sowore to provide two sureties as part of the bail conditions.

According to the court, one of the sureties must be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community, while the second must own landed property in Abuja. The judge also directed that both sureties be verified by the prosecution.

 

In addition, the court ordered the activist to deposit his international passport with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court pending the determination of the case.

 

Justice Umar subsequently released Sowore into the custody of his legal team and adjourned the matter until July 6, when the defendant is expected to open his defence

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that it has uploaded the name of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal despite a court judgment ordering the party’s deregistration.

 

The party said the move followed the filing of an appeal and an application for a stay of execution challenging the judgment.

 

In a statement issued on Monday, the NDC’s National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, disclosed that the appeal and accompanying application had been served on the INEC Chairman, urging the electoral body to act in line with the law.

 

Dickson insisted that the NDC remains a legally registered political party, stressing that it has participated in all electoral processes and successfully conducted its primary elections under INEC’s supervision.

 

According to him, INEC granted the party access to its portal for the submission of candidates for the 2027 general elections.

 

He revealed that the names of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and himself had already been uploaded, while the vice-presidential candidate’s details would be submitted after the completion of the required documentation.

 

The former Bayelsa State governor also noted that the party remains within INEC’s timetable, with submissions for National Assembly candidates scheduled to close on July 11 and those for governorship and state assembly candidates on July 17.

 

Dickson appealed to party members to remain calm, assuring them that there was no cause for concern despite the court ruling. He added that reconciliation efforts had commenced following the party’s primaries and promised that unsuccessful aspirants would be accommodated in the party’s campaign structures and committees.

 

He maintained that the courts would ultimately determine the party’s legal status following the filing of the appeal and stay of execution.

 

“Today, the NDC has filed an appeal against the ruling as well as a stay of execution/injunction, which has been served with a covering letter to the INEC chairman and his team to do what is right according to law and what is legally sensible,” Dickson said.

 

He added that all candidates for elective offices had already emerged through primaries monitored by INEC, leaving only the administrative process of submitting their names to the electoral commission.

Naira to Dollar Exchange Rate Today, June 29, 2026: Naira falls further against US Dollar

The naira extended its losing streak against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Monday, opening the new trading week on a weaker note.

According to data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, the local currency depreciated to N1,383.63 per dollar on Monday from N1,380.93 recorded at the close of trading last week.

 

The latest figure represents a decline of N2.70 for the Nigerian currency compared to Friday’s official exchange rate.

 

However, the naira remained unchanged at the parallel market, where it traded at N1,395 per dollar, the same rate recorded at the close of business on Friday.

 

A Bureau de Change operator in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, Bengazzi Abubakar, told DAILY POST that the buying rate stood at N1,385 per dollar, while the selling rate remained at N1,395.

 

“We buy US dollars at N1,385 and sell at N1,395 per dollar,” he said.

 

Meanwhile, the country’s external reserves remained above the $51 billion mark. Data from the apex bank showed that Nigeria’s foreign reserves stood at $51.29 billion as of June 26, 2026.

 

The movement in the exchange rate comes as market participants continue to monitor developments in the foreign exchange market and the CBN’s policy measures aimed at improving liquidity and stabilising the value of the naira.

Suspected bandits have reportedly abducted several students sitting the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations, alongside some teachers, during an attack on Lassa town in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

The attackers, who stormed the community on Monday, reportedly struck on a busy market day, causing panic among residents and disrupting commercial activities.

According to reports, one teacher was killed during the assault, while an unspecified number of students writing the NECO examinations and teachers were taken away by the gunmen.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants, believed to be heavily armed insurgents, arrived in military-style camouflage and rode into the town on motorcycles, carrying out the operation without resistance.

The latest attack has renewed concerns over the deteriorating security situation in parts of southern Borno State, where communities have continued to experience deadly raids despite repeated military operations against insurgent groups.

As of the time of filing this report, the Borno State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
