I can’t decide Ayu’s resignation- Atiku replies Wike’s camp

0

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, says he can’t decide the resignation of the party’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.

“On the calls for the resignation or removal from office of our national chairman, however, I must reiterate what I have said severally in public and in private; the decision for Dr. Iyorchia Ayu to resign from office is personal to Dr. Ayu and, neither I nor anyone else can make that decision for him,” Atiku said in a statement hours after the camp of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State pulled out of his presidential campaign council for the 2023 general elections, insisting that Ayu must go for a southerner to step in.

“As to the calls for the removal of Dr. Ayu from office, however, I will state that, as a committed democrat and firm believer in the rule of law and democratic tenets, and our party being one set up, organized and regulated by law and our constitution, it is my absolute belief that everything that we do in our party must be done in accordance with, and conformity to, the law and our constitution.

“If Dr. Ayu is to be removed from office, it must be done in accordance with the laws that set out the basis for such removal. In any event, you will all recall that the very body that is empowered by law to initiate this removal from office, has already passed a vote of confidence in him,” Atiku added.

NCC deploys 84 IT projects to support Persons with Disabilities

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has deployed 84 assistive Information Technology projects at different locations in Nigeria to support people with special needs while supporting policies that enable disadvantaged members of the society to live a more qualitative life.

“The E-Accessibility project seeks to meet the ICT needs of persons living with disabilities in Nigeria by providing ICT tools, assistive technologies, training, and Internet provision in the identified locations. Between 2012 to 2020, the NCC has deployed the E-Accessibility Projects in, at least, 84 locations nationwide.”

The Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Commission, Prof. Umar Danbatta, disclosed this during a courtesy visit by a delegation from National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) to the NCC over the weekend in Abuja, where the EVC also restated NCC’s commitment to continually support people with special needs across the country.

Danbatta, while receiving the NCPWD team led by its Executive Secretary, James Lalu, said the telecom regulator has always implemented initiatives aimed at ensuring digital inclusivity for all Nigerians regardless of their circumstances.

Represented by the Director, Human Capital and Administration at NCC, Usman Malah, the EVC said telecoms sector has become the backbone of the national economy and has recorded tremendous growth from 400,000 telephone lines on the eve of sectoral deregulation in 2000 to over 208 million active telephone lines now, just as active Internet subscription rose to 156 million in the last two decades.

The EVC stated that the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Industry’s contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) currently stands at 18.44 per cent, going by the data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) as at the second quarter of 2022. Additionally, Danbatta said that NCC has continued to ensure quality of service delivery to the consumers and digital inclusion for all.

Accordingly, Danbatta said the NCC recognises and aligns with the noble objectives behind the establishment of NCPWD as enabled by the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018.

The NCC Chief Executive stated that in addition to implementing the five per cent inclusiveness of persons with disabilities in NCC’s staffing efforts in accordance with the law, the telecom regulator, through the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), has executed many projects within the framework of its E-Accessibility Programme in last 10 years that targets the challenged members of the society.

“In other words, the project provides ICT tools and Assistive Technologies (ATs) to the blind, the deaf, dumb, crippled, cognitively impaired, and other categories of people living with disabilities. As disadvantaged members of society, the project is designed to assist in improving the quality of life of people living with disability,” he said.

In his remarks, the NCPWD’s Executive Secretary, Lalu, said the purpose of the agency’s visit was to keep the NCC management abreast of its mandates and activities, and to seek greater collaborations with NCC for the benefits of estimated 35.5 million persons with disabilities in Nigeria.

He commended the NCC for the “wonderful work it has been doing through various projects in support of people with disabilities in the country.” Lalu slso appealed to the NCC to help in creating awareness among telecoms service providers to comply with the legal requirement to dedicate five per cent of their employment quota to persons with disabilities. He said this category of Nigerians are ‘smart, professional and intelligent’ and can make significant contribution to the growth of the respective organizations employing them, despite their disabilities.

“What we want to achieve is to make Nigeria a country that is comfortable for PLWD by ending discrimination and providing adequate reporting system and we have seen NCC as a strategic and important partner in this journey,” Lalu said.

The NCPWD was established, pursuant to section 31 of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disability (Prohibition) Act 2018, to promote, protect and prioritise the rights of persons with disabilities, and to further enhance their productivity through education, health, and other socio-economic activities and programmes.

2023: Wike’s camp pulled out of Atiku campaign council, insist on Ayu’s resignation

0

The crisis rocking the nation’s main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party has been worsen on Wednesday as Governor Nyesom Wike’s team reportedly pulled out of the campaign Council of the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar ahead of the forthcoming election.

This came following a meeting early on Wednesday morning in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Our correspondent gathered that members of the Rivers State Governor’s team vowed not to play any role in Atiku’s campaign ahead of the 2023 general elections.

They insisted that the National Chairman of the PDP, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, must resign for them to rescind their decision.

They said there was no going back on the call for Ayu’s resignation as the national chairman of the party.

Present at the meeting were aggrieved party leaders party chieftains, including founding members of the party, governors, former ministers

They insisted that the position must come to the South for balance, justice, and equity in the party, hence they will not play any role in Atiku Abubakar’s campaign council.

They also resolve that an acting Chairman from the South should lead the party on the national campaign, going into the elections.

They made their position known in a resolution read by former deputy national chairman of the party, Chief Bode George, after a long meeting held at Governor Wike’s private residence, near Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

They maintained that their position was not negotiable as the chairmanship of Ayu undermined the unity and constitution of the party.

“We resolve that we are deeply concerned by the division in our party. We are aware that over the years our party has developed conflict resolution mechanisms that guarantee inclusiveness.

“The published presidential campaign council list translates to putting the cat before the horse. The pertinent issue remains the resolution of the leadership which is a departure of.

“Senator Iyorchia Ayu must resign as the National Chairman of the party for an acting Chairman of the Southern Nigerian extraction to emerge and lead the party on the national campaign.

“Consequently, we resolve not to participate in the campaign council in whatever capacity until the resignation of Dr. Iyorchia Ayu.”

Another ally of Wike and former Plateau State Governor, Senator Jonah Jang, lampooned Ayu for embracing Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tanbuwal, and called him the hero of the convention.

Jang said the action of Ayu showed that the outcome of the primary was preplanned to short-change the other contestants.

He said, “For a National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu to go and embrace Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tanbuwal, calling him the heron of the convention meant that there was a private arrangement that was done with Tambuwal to shortchange other contestants including Governor Wike.

“Here was a referee, who helped one of his sides to score a goal and then blew the whistle. This is not what we formed the PDP to do for Nigerians. Therefore, we unequivocally ask that Ayu must step down”.

The pro-Wike group said their support for Wike was not because he lost the presidential primary or because he was not chosen as the running mate to Atiku but in the interest of equity and justice in the party.

On his part, former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, said, “You cannot build on a faulty foundation.

“This call for the chairman to step down or resign is not because any of us is aggrieved but because we believe it is important to ensure a just, fair, principled, and constitutional structure for the party. If we want to restructure Nigeria, we should have the courage to restructure our party”.

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, said: “We hope that the powers that be listen to the voice of reason and do the needful”.

0
Ahead of the forthcoming 2023 presidential election, the Chief Executive Officer of NOI Polls, Dr Chike Nwangwu on Tuesday revealed that 74% Nigerians no longer feel save living in the country.
Chike, disclosed this while speaking with Journalists during a Public presentation of Afrobarometer survey findings on ‘Crime, Security and Kidnapping in Nigeria’ in Abuja.
“One of the key thing from the survey is that a lot of Nigerians do not feel Nigeria is save. If I am going to put the number is it about 74% of Nigeria. These are very concerning numbers, we feel that this topic is important for us to put on the news right now.
“As we are in election period, Presidential Candidates should tell us what they will be doing to address the issue of Insecurity.
“This was a nationwide survey done by face-face interviews. The poll represents the view of adult Nigerians. We spoke to about 1,600 Nigerians on their perceptions about insecurity”, he stated.
Meanwhile, the CEO of Beacon Security Consulting and a security expert, Dr Kabiru Adamu explained that efforts by Federal Government in tackling insecurity in Nigeria is not yielding enough results as the menace seems to have heightened ahead of the forthcoming general election.

Speaking on the impact of the insecurity survey on the forthcoming election he said, “It is not an option, We should have an election, it will help to reinforce our democracy. Anything that will affect the free flow of democracy should not be considered. I don’t think the issue of not conducting should come up. What we should focus on is the integrity of the election, here with the electoral law, this is possible. I am not in doubt about the certainty of the election.
“The question of enough and not enough is depended on the outcome, I think Government has given priority to security, unfortunately the results are not meeting the yearnings and aspirations of Nigeria”, he stated.

2023: Buhari in full support of youth dominated politics – Femi Adesina

0

The Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina has described his principal as a staunch supporter of youth-dominated politics.

Mr Adesina made this known during a chit-chat with News Digest on Friday at the presidential villa in Abuja.

He stated that Nigerian youths have all the veritable platforms to aspire for political offices as power will not be handed to them on a platter.

Mr Adesina who was enthused by the growing clamour for a youth-dominated political dispensation said it is achievable if only youths can take one step at a time.

He, however, said the presidential seat cannot be immediate but it is imminent and achievable if youths exhibit traits of willingness, passion, zeal and consistency in the political scene.

“If the youth want their impact to be felt, they must go for it. They asked for the ‘NotTooYoungToRun’ law, it has been passed. So, what are they waiting for? In the last election, how many people were there as youths? How many votes did they score, that shows that even youths did not vote for their own.”

The president’s aide also noted that political power will not be ceded to the youths if they don’t aim at it and aspire to hold political offices.

He, however, said “it does not necessarily mean that the youth will be the next president” but urged them to aspire and grow to the level of contesting for Nigeria’s most powerful position.

“What youths need to know is that power is never given, it is taken. So, if they seat and wait for power to be ceded to them, they will wait for a long time.

“If they think it is going to be handed over to them on a platter of gold, then they need to think again. They go for it.”
