Atiku won’t apologise over ‘Yoruba, Igbo Presdient’ Comment- Chidoka

0

Former Minister of Aviation Osita Chidoka says Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won’t apologise over his Yoruba and Igbo president comment.

The former vice president had in a recent gathering advised northerners to vote for someone from the region in next year’s general election.

“What the average Northerner needs is somebody who’s from the North and also understands that part of the country and has been able to build bridges across the country,” the PDP presidential candidate said.
“This is what the Northerner needs. It doesn’t need a Yoruba or Igbo candidate. I stand before you as a pan-Nigerian of northern origin.”

No Apologies

The comment had generated heated debates and condemnations from several quarters but Chidoka maintained that Atiku does not need to apologize for the remark.

“I think we need to move beyond these political gimmicks and political gimmickry that goes on when people say one thing, we turn it the other way round and we use it for political ends. The point he is making is a very clear point – that we need a Nigerian president, somebody that would unify the country, will understand the issues, and be able to solve them,” Chidoka said while fielding questions on Channels Television’s Politics Today which aired on Tuesday.

“So, I don’t think that it is a statement that warrants any apologies or discussions. It is for Vice President Atiku to continue to explain himself to the public. We still have four months in the campaign so he needs to go out and explain his agenda that he is a Nigerian president that is desirous of making sure that all parts of Nigeria feel wanted in Nigeria, and feel united. He needs to unify the country to be able to propose the difficult solutions that must be applied to make this economy and the country work again.”
The PDP chieftain described the debates generated by Atiku’s comment as “unfortunate”.

NCC disowns circulating “Certificate of Site Ownership for Mass Transmission Antenna”

0

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC),  has discovered, through social listening and environmental surveillance that a fraudulent letter, titled: “Certificate of Site Ownership”, for clearance of “Mast Transmission Antenna”, are being circulated by some unidentifiable individuals, and purporting that the letter was issued by the Commission.

The fraudulent letter claimed that NCC had conducted an inspection on a certain site which is for “9-Mobile Telecommunications Company G.P.R.S”. The fraudsters also gave conditions that the unsuspecting recipient of the letter would meet to make the certificate valid and effective for use by “10th November 2022”. It is possible that several and variants of the fraudulent letter may have been sent to individuals, and organizations, with the intent to defraud, using the name of the Commission.

This was contained in a statement released to Nigerian Newssphere on Monday by NCC’s Director Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka.

“The Nigerian Communications Commission, therefore, wishes to dissociate itself from the import, and content of this letter, or similar ones, which may have been sent out by the faceless individuals.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the design and format of the forged letterhead bears no similarity with those of the Commission. The department quoted in the fraudulent letter is non-existent at the Commission. The signatory to the letter is also not known to the Commission.

“The public is hereby advised to note that telecommunications services are offered by companies which are issued licences by the Commission. The Commission also maintains a register of all telecommunications companies in the country. Suffice it to say, that, the process of initiating, or exchanging correspondence between the Commission, and the licensees, has definite and distinct standard and style.

“In addition, the Commission has very open and credible channels of communication, through which all information about it, and its activities, including matters relating to correspondence on any subject matter, can be leveraged for verification.

“While the Commission frowns at the nefarious activities of these fraudsters, telecom stakeholders, the Nigerian public, and corporate organizations, are advised to be wary of the wiles of many fraudsters prowling in the streets with all kinds of illegitimate documents, to avoid being victims of their nefarious activities”.

Liverpool pull down ‘the wings’ of ManCity with a lone goal

0

Manchester City have been beaten by old foes Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Though Jurgen Klopp’s side had a galvanising result midweek as they stuck seven past Rangers, they’ve had a difficult start to the season with just two league wins to their name so far and are down in 11th place.

Both teams went into the game far from full strength, Liverpool especially. The hosts will be without seven players as Luis Diaz, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Curtis Jones, Naby Keita, Arthur and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all sidelined.

City do have three injuries of their own, though, with England trio Kyle Walker, Kalvin Phillips and John Stones unavailable.

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, on Saturday, has urged incoming government to probe the oil subsidy regime under president Muhammadu Buhari’s government.

Sanusi made this disclosure in Kaduna State, on the occasion of the 7th edition of KadInvest, an annual event organised by the Kaduna State Investment Promotion Agency(KSIPA).

He said there must be accountability and transparency in public finance if Nigeria must survive.

He noted that no government has the moral right to impose hardship on Nigerians.

Sanusi told all 2023 presidential candidates to prepare their minds for tough times.

He also decries untamed oil theft, Nigeria’s rising debt profile, unbalanced subsidy payment and soaring foreign exchange, amongst other monetary and economic challenges facing Nigeria at the moment.

According to him, “My advice for incoming government is to probe all documents of oil subsidy. There must be document and evidence for every Dollar spent on oil subsidy. They must give account of the ship(s) that came, and we must verify from insurance companies if those ships were in Nigeria on that date. Before you pay subsidy the laws says there must be proof at the price you claim it was brought in. Until we bring credibility and transparency to public finance, no government has the moral right to impose hardship on Nigerians.
They’ve suffered enough. But if we deal with the rent seeking and close the gaps, then we can ask Nigerians to make sacrifices, we have made sacrifices but we’ve to make sacrifice to reset this Country.

“Those that want to contest election, I wish you all the best, but prepare your minds that it is not going to be rossy. It is not going to be a popular job. Populism destroys a nation. You’ve to take decision that unpopular. If whenever you take decision, because you want to win election, you will never do the right thing. So you will have to take difficult decision, and try to explain to Nigerians as much as possible, but this decision are absolutely necessary if this country must survive”, he said.

GITEX Global 2022: DG NITDA hails Nigeria’s participation, describes event as best outing

0

The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa has described the 2022 edition of the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX) as the best outing for Nigeria given the visibility, participation, magnitude of benefits and number of startups brought to the annual tech event.

Inuwa said this while giving a round up of events for the five days as regards Nigeria’s participation at GITEX 2022.

According to Inuwa, Nigeria was the only country that had two start-ups that scaled through to the final stage of the Supernova Challenge Pitch Competition.

“Nigerian Startups got a lot of investments and deals signed this year. Again, we have seen a lot of interest in Nigeria, in the sense that we see a lot of people throng the pavilion, interacting with our start-ups, trying to understand the Nigerian ecosystem and seeking information on how they can come to the country”.

“We have seen others come in to ask details on how they can partner with us to export Nigeria’s technologies to the global stage”, Inuwa added.

While responding to some questions from journalists, the Director-General emphasized that Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is about innovation and it doesn’t happen in isolation, stressing that one would need to come out of the box to be part of the global ecosystem where there would be exchange of ideas, knowledge and expertise.
“GITEX said they want to start going to Africa, and that they would want to start with Morocco”.

“They have also opened conversations with us that they want to also come to Nigeria for the hosting of GITEX Africa, and this is very strategic because if they want to reach core Africans, they would need Nigeria”, the DG maintained.

He reiterated the fact that Nigeria has the biggest ecosystem as the country capitalizes on the continental free trade agreement which allows access to the rest of Africa from Nigeria.

While recounting the gains of the Nigerian team at GITEX, the NITDA Boss mentioned that about $10m investment deal was signed, apart from the plans and interests other investors have shown in Nigerian Startups.

More so, he noted that the global prize won by one of the start-ups named “Shap-Shap” in which he got a whooping sum of $8000 was another feat worthy of mention.

Other Chief Executive Officers of Parastatals under the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy including the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Aliyu Aziz and his counterpart from Galaxy Backbone, Prof. Muhammed Abubakar gave their impressions known.

They narrated how beneficial their participation would impact the workings of their respective organizations and how they were able to also showcased their services and got the desired attention.

The CEOs unanimously gave a thumbs up to the National Information Technology Development Agency ( NITDA) for sustaining Nigeria’s participation at GITEX over the years and hoped that the bigger picture would not elude the country especially as it inches towards achieving a Digital Nigeria by 2030.

The start-ups who also made their impressions known were grateful to the Federal Government for always supporting Start-ups to thrive.

Meanwhile, the founder of Shap-Shap and winner of the Mobility and Logistics Innovation category, Khalil Halilu was hopeful that the money would go a long way in improving his innovations.

He encouraged Nigerian start-ups to keep their innovative ideas alive and always give their best in every Innovation.

NITDA bags DWTC Most Valued Partnership Award

0

As part of activities hosting the 2022 edition of the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX) and in recognition of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA)’s excellent services at the Annual Tech Show, GITEX, Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) has honoured the Agency with the prestigious “Most Valued Partnership Award”.

Receiving the award on behalf of the Agency, the Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa CCIE registered NITDA’s appreciation to the Organizers and the Centre for award.

The award presentation was preceded by a panel discussion where the Director-General and his Ethiopian counterpart from the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, Selamyhun Adefris Haile deliberated on the topics: “What is the attraction of the startup ecosystem in Africa and “What is the government’s Strategies? (Startup act, Participating at GITEX).

Inuwa who seized the opportunity to speak on ongoing efforts by the Federal Government in strengthening the tech ecosystem said a lot of innovations are coming out of Africa where Nigeria owns the largest market.

According to him, there are about fifteen major sectors where Nigerian startups play key roles and are solving some challenges therein with their indigenous solutions which have global impact.

“Fintech tops the list because financial inclusion is critical to the economy and it is closely followed by e-Health, eduTech, Logistics and Mobility etc”.

“In Nigeria, more than thirty-six percent of the Startups are in Fintech sub-sector which explains why Fintech is thriving as they are creating hundreds and thousands of jobs”, Inuwa noted.

The Director-General stressed the fact Nigeria has as at early this year, had five unicorns out of the seven in Africa, adding that about three additional unicorns might be recorded anytime soon.

“That means before the end of this year, we are hoping to have between eight to nine unicorns in Nigeria. Some of them have huge capital base; Infact, one of them has more than $3.5B valuation which is a Fintech with valuation almost twice as the biggest bank in the country”, Inuwa affirmed.

Inuwa indicated that the government is trying to give a leveled playing field to all start-ups by creating an enabling environment for them.

“As a government, we have a foundational policy to help the Start-up which is called: National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) for a Digital Nigeria and my Agency, NITDA which is one of the Agencies responsible for implementing the policy crafted our own Strategy Roadmap and Action Plan which has seven strategic pillars; all of these policies are geared towards creating a workable environment for our Startups”, Inuwa explained.

The NITDA Boss who avowed that the Agency adopts a developmental regulation approach in order to co-create with the tech ecosystem, assured the audience that the Start-up Bill once assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari will greatly help in addressing the myriad of challenges plaguing the sector.

He expressed optimism that Nigeria will be at the fore front of bridging the global talent gap.

“If Africa, Nigeria in particular positions itself well, we can bridge that talent gap; the talent industry is projected to create about $8.5 Trillion revenue by 2030, so any country that positions itself to bridge that gap will be among the top economies in the world”, the DG maintained.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14 this year.

Telecom infrastructure critical to successful 2023 elections – Danbatta

0

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Prof. Umar Danbatta, has said telecom infrastructure is very critical to successful 2023 elections, therefore, every Nigerian in every community should join hands in protecting it for the benefit of the country.

Nigerian Newssphere learnt in a statement signed by the Commission’s Director, Public Affairs, Mr Reuben Muoka on Tuesday.

Danbatta, who was special guest at the 6th Edition of the Annual Conference of Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) in Lagos at the weekend, with focus on the forthcoming election and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu in attendance, said with the planned transmission of election data and results riding on telecom infrastructure, there was need to ensure the fidelity of the transmission systems to enhance the credibility of such data.

“If telecom infrastructure is vandalised or damaged, it would create problem in the area of the data transmission during election; citizens will find it difficult to use their phones to seamlessly communicate and the journalists too might find it difficult in being able to access their web platforms to disseminate necessary information which members of the public require to make informed decisions at every point in time,” he said.

Danbatta recalled that, over the years, the telecoms sector has continued to face destabilising situations arising from negative attitudes and actions of hostile communities; theft of diesel, batteries, and power generators from telecom base stations; digging up and cutting of fibre optic cables by construction workers; indiscriminate sealing/locking-up of Base Transceiver Station (BTS) sites by state governments, other governmental and community stakeholders; as well as other disruptive activities which must be decisively tackled.

While reiterating the importance of telecommunications in all aspects of human lives, including the forthcoming election and other national activities and programmes, Danbatta said that without telecom infrastructure, it will be difficult to communicate with family and friends over long distances or conducting banking, insurance, or accessing government and other social services, including education, entertainment, and other essentials services that enhance quality of life.

“This means that telecom infrastructure is important, and we must all ensure that we guard and protect those critical national infrastructural assets now, during the upcoming elections and thereafter. So, every citizen in Nigeria must take responsibility for the protection of telecom facilities for the benefits to all,” Danbatta said.

He enjoined GOCOP members to use their credible media platforms and enviable experiences to collaborate with the NCC in creating greater awareness and public enlightenment on the need to protect telecoms infrastructure.

At the event, which was chaired by the Founder, Centre for Alternative Policy Perspectives and Strategy (CAPPS), Dr. Umar Ardo; with other personalities including former Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase; Regional Director Ford Foundation, Dr. Chidi Aniagolu-Okoye; and distinguished members of GOCOP, most of who are senior media professionals, Danbatta commended GOCOP members for their contributions in the promotion of awareness of derivable benefits of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) through their online platforms.

“The NCC would like to commend the leadership and entire members of GOCOP for the good work you are doing in your professional practice of disseminating timely and accurate information to Nigerians to enable citizens to take inform decisions,” he said.
