A group has taken over government’s responsible by building a borehole project to provide portable water for her host community.

Nigerian Newssphere learnt this during the commissioning of a borehole project donated by Church of Christ(Kado) in Abuja on Saturday.

Speaking at the event, the Mandate Secretary, Agriculture and Rural Development Development, Federal Capital Territory Administration(FCTA), represented by the Director of Administration, Mrs Ann Ijeoma, expressed her delight over the initiative.

She stressed the importance of love and the need for the community to continue existing together in peace.

The Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister, Attah Ikharo said the initiative has exemplified Christ’s love.

He emphasized on the importance of giving and making impact.

“We don’t who will drink from this water, but we believe it means well for everyone.

“FCT minister is key to get to understand the fundamental of what life is about, he has been grateful to the indigene of the FCT, that is why for the first time the Ministry now has two mandate secretaries who are indigenes in it executive councils”.

He noted that the indigenous people of FCT have been very peaceful and embracing to the federal government and residence.

“When we are moving from Lagos to Abuja, you opened your arms to us, there have never being violence, kidnapping, insurgence. You allowed us to access your lands to development while taking care of your interests also. The Chief, Madakis, the FCT Minister appreciate your efforts”, he said.

Earlier in his opening remarks, Bishop of Church of Christ Kado, Peter Egure, disclosed that the water project is part of the Church way of giving back to her host community.

Blackbyte Ransomware abuses legit driver to disable security products, says NCC-CSIRT

0

The Nigerian Communications Commission’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (NCC-CSIRT) has flagged a high-impact threat to Windows operating system, the Blackbyte Ransomware, which has the capacity to bypass protections by disabling more than 1,000 drivers used by various security solutions.

The NCC-CSIRT said the BlackByte ransomware gang, which is using a new technique that researchers called, “Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver,” is exploiting the security issue that allowed it to disable drivers that prevent multiple Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) and antivirus products like Avast, Sandboxie, Windows DbgHelp Library, and Comodo Internet Security, from operating normally.

Recent attacks attributed to this group involved a version of the MSI Afterburner RTCore64.sys driver, which is vulnerable to a privilege escalation and code execution flaw tracked as CVE-2019-16098.

The “Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver” (BYOVD) method is effective because the vulnerable drivers are signed with a valid certificate and run with high privileges on the system.

Two notable recent examples of BYOVD attacks include Lazarus, abusing a buggy Dell driver and unknown hackers abusing an anti-cheat driver/module for the Genshin Impact game.

The NCC-CSIRT advisory recommended that system administrators protect against BlackByte’s new security bypassing trick by adding the particular MSI driver to an active blocklist, monitoring all driver installation events, and scrutinising them frequently to find any rogue injections that do not have a hardware match.

The CSIRT is the telecom sector’s cyber security incidence centre set up by the NCC to focus on incidents in the telecom sector and as they may affect telecom consumers and citizens at large.

The CSIRT also works collaboratively with the Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team (ngCERT), established by the Federal Government to reduce the volume of future computer risk incidents by preparing, protecting, and securing Nigerian cyberspace to forestall attacks, and problems or related events.

According to him, “We can no longer ignore the climate emergency. Drastic changes in our environment are beginning to have dramatic impacts on our daily lives and livelihoods.

“I urge the governments of UPU member countries to work with both public and private partners to secure climate investments for the postal sector.

“I call on Posts to revive the spirit of innovation that helped them support their communities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Use this experience to find innovative solutions that will reduce your carbon footprint, and let it serve as a benchmark for finding appropriate and impactful responses to support your communities.

“Finally, I ask the billions of people who use the Post each day to support our sector as we work to build a better, brighter future”, he said.

Strike: Resume work immediately, Appeal Court tells ASUU

0

The Court of Appeal, Abuja, has ordered members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resume work with immediate effect.

The appellate court gave the order in a ruling on an application by the ASUU seeking permission for it to appeal against the order of the National Industrial Court which asked the striking lecturers to resume duty.

The Court also granted ASUU “conditional leave to appeal the order of the Industrial Court, while insisting that ASUU must obey the order of the lower court with effect from today, October 7.

The 3-man panel led by Justice Hamman Barka, said for ASUU to file it’s notice of appeal within 7 days, it must show evidence that it’s members have resumed work immediately.

The panel held that failure to adhere to the order, will make the appeal incompetent before Court of Appeal.

Treat 2022 floods as national emergency, HURIWA tells Buhari

0

…says FG’s un-proactiveness caused 300 deaths, 300 displaced communities in 2022

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), on Friday, urged President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly to declare the ravaging floods across the country as a national emergency.

HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko in a statement to NewsDirect, said it is worrisome that the floods in some states like Kogi, Benue, Nasarawa, Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Yobe, Sokoto, amongst others have wreaked devastating havoc including destruction of thousands of hectares of farmlands, displaced thousands of residents of the states, and killed hundreds of people in 2022 alone.

The group said the Federal Government, the Humanitarian and Disaster Management Ministry as well as concerned agencies like the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) must come up with robust strategies to prevent further disaster that may be caused by floods and provide succour to displaced victims and those who lost their means of livelihood when their farms were swamped by the floods.

“According to a recent report by NEMA, more than 300 people have so far been killed in flood disaster across Nigeria in 2022 alone, with over 50 flood disaster alerts received by the agency on a daily basis, with more 100 communities affected.

“Aside from NEMA’s statistics, the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency on Wednesday said over 31,000 households had been affected by floods in 255 communities across the 17 local government areas in the state.

“NEMA also sounded the alarm that the 2022 flood disaster will be worse than that of 2012 where at least 363 people were killed and over 2.1 million people were displaced by floods that ravaged different parts of Nigeria.

“Sadly, the lack of proactiveness of the Federal Government and the concerned ministries, departments and agencies particularly NEMA, has caused Nigeria huge losses so far this year with over 300 persons killed by floods and over 100 communities submerged and the people displaced.

“The job of FG, NEMA and others is not to reel devastating tragic statistics but to forestall disasters of this nature because the current realities weren’t accidental as weather forecasts must have revealed.

“For instance, thousands of travellers and residents of Lokoja, Kogi State capital, are currently stranded as the city has been overrun by heavy flooding because the 196 kilometres Lokoja-Abuja road was submerged by flooding, consequently paralysing economic activities, including food supply chain from the North to the South after the Niger and Benue rivers broke their banks”.

“Also, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) said the current fuel scarcity in Abuja and other neighbouring states on the lack of access of fuel trucks to through the swamped Lokoja roads.

“Similarly, Olam Nigeria Limited, an agri-business company, said the price of rice will go up by December due to flooding from River Benue which has damaged the company’s crops and infrastructure”, he stated.

2023:He’s ‘master of the game’, says Kayamo describing Tinubu return after 12-days in UK

0

Spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council, Festus Kayemo described APC’s presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu as ‘master of the game’ after returning to Abuja.

Tinubu returned to Nigeria on Thursday after 12 days in the United Kingdom (UK).

During his time away from the country, there had been criticism targeted at the APC over Tinubu’s absence from public events, including the signing of the peace accord on the 2023 elections.

There had also been allegations that his absence caused the party to postpone the inauguration of its presidential campaign council, which was earlier scheduled for September.

Amid the concerns over his whereabouts, Tinubu had, on Twitter, shared a video of himself on a fitness bike on October 2.

“Many have said I have died; others claim I have withdrawn from the presidential campaign. Well… Nope. This is the reality: I am strong, I am healthy and I am READY to serve Nigerians from Day One,” he had tweeted.

In a tweet after Tinubu returned to the country on Thursday, Keyamo described the APC candidate as “the master of the game”.

“He teased them; he played mind games with them; their thoughts went wild; but @officialABAT is the master of the game. Just when they thought they had something on which to feast, he’s rather the one now feasting on their naivety. Welcome back, the City Boy!” Keyamo tweeted.

On his part, Tinubu told Nigerians that he is back to restore hope, promising to make Nigeria a better country for all.

34 States fail to meet 15% adequate health funding benchmark between 2020, 2022

0

Federal and several state governments in Nigeria continue to fall short of the 15 percent continental health funding benchmark for African countries, despite the threats of the COVID pandemic, healthcare challenges, and poor health outcomes in the country.

A new health report released to Nigerian Newssphere on Wednesday by the ONE Campaign revealed this.

The report, titled “Post-Pandemic Health Financing by State Governments in Nigeria 2020 to 2022,” provides an in-depth analysis of sub-national and federal government health expenditure trends, revealing that while the combined budgetary allocations of all 36 states increased by 12.8 percent between 2020 and 2022, in real terms, the health sector received less funding in 2022 than in 2020 when adjusted for inflation. The report also reveals that the proportion of total budgets allocated to health by most state governments is on a downward trend, reflecting the quality of healthcare delivery in the country.

In 2001, the heads of state of African Union countries met in Abuja and pledged to devote at least 15% of their annual budgets to improving the health sector. But two decades after the Abuja Declaration, Nigeria still struggles to meet this goal. The COVID-19 pandemic also revealed the challenges in Nigeria’s healthcare system, with stakeholders and many Nigerians hoping it would be the game-changer that finally motivates governments at all levels to prioritize healthcare, commit more funds to revitalize the sector, drive improved health outcomes and protect the masses from future health emergencies. The report’s findings, however, show a deviation from this expectation, with more than ten state governments in Nigeria reducing their fiscal allocations to healthcare since the pandemic hit in 2020, putting a strain on an already-stressed sector.

Nigeria Country Director at The ONE Campaign, Stanley Achonu, said “Nigeria’s health indicators are reportedly some of the worst in Africa. COVID-19 has exposed additional gaps in the country’s healthcare system and has shown why the sector requires ambitious strategies and adequate funding in order to serve the masses, particularly the poor and most vulnerable in the society. It is, therefore, extremely worrisome that some state governments are slashing their annual allocations to health when they should be striving to meet the Abuja Declaration’s 15 percent funding benchmark. As the 2023 budget season approaches, governments at all levels must prioritize health care and allocate a significant portion of their budget to improving healthcare delivery. Adequate disbursements should follow these allocations to finance health infrastructure and programs.”
