Resurface of long fuel queues across major cities in Nigeria

0

The shortage of Premium Motor Spirit(PMS), popularly known as fuel has become a reoccurring crisis without no permanent solution in Nigeria. This have now become a routine national embarrassment as the sixth largest exporter of crude oil in Africa.

The Federal Capital Territory(FCT), Lagos,
and other cities are faced with another round
of fuel scarcity as queues resurface.

In some parts, it is either you buy at black market price of N200-250 per litre or you spend sleepless hours queueing without a guarantee of getting fuel.

The pain differs for those who depend on fuel to run their businesses; same fate goes for people without constant power supply.

By implication, there is a spiralling effect on the prices of goods and services, transportation fares and others.

Several explanations have been given as
factors for the scarcity. For instance former Secretary Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, (IPMAN), Mr. Mike Osatuyi, attributed the scarcity to inadequate supply in the past few days.

He told Journalists that as a result of the supply shortfall, depots prices had risen to N180 per litre in Lagos and its environs.

He said, “The situation has culminated in higher prices at the depots. Our members, who find it difficult to get the product, pay between N175 – N185 per litre. Consequently, we are compelled to
sell at higher prices in order to cover
cost.”

The President of Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN),Debo Ahmed had on Monday attributed the petrol scarcity in the Federal CapitalTerritory (FCT) and its environs on supply gap the blockade created.

Earlier, at the peak of the flood situation in Lokoja, Kogi State, The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority(NMDPRA) said the current fuel scarcity in Abuja and other surrounding states is caused by the inability of fuel trucks to have access to Lokoja roads. The regulatory body said the
roads were flooded.

The agency, however, assured that there was enough fuel stock and therefore appealed to members of the public to avoid panic buying as all efforts were being made to resolve fuel shortage in some filling stations in Abuja and its environs.

According to a statement from the agency, the Lokoja flooding had affected the distribution of petroleum products to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and environs as water had submerged a greater part of Lokoja city and grounded all
vehicular movements, adding that as part
of measures to mitigate the situation,
“trucking via alternative routes is currently
ongoing.”

But now that the flood has receded, the scarcity of the petroleum products persisted in Abuja, its environs, Lagos and other cities.

Though the IPMAN’s President in a statement has attributed the current scarcity to the break in supply of the product, stressing that there was a lot of product in the depots.

“They (suppliers) have to load from the depots to meet up because as it is coming, people are buying. A lot of people are thinking there is still the iscarcity so they will queue. It is not that there is no product, there is a lot of product in the depots. So, it is because of the break in supply of the product that is still causing the scarcity,”he noted.

However these justifications sound whether on the part NMDPRA or IPMAN, what ordinary Nigerians need is availability of fuel, not an amorphous brand of excuses.

Fuel scarcity comes with an occasioned hardship whereby, car owners, motorists spend unusual hours queuing for fuel in filling stations. This shouldn’t be the fate of anybody, not even ones enemy.

Aside being the poverty capital of the World, Nigeria prides herself with perennial hardship in the name fuel scarcity. In a nation with the 10th largest Crude oil reserves, but its citizen queue daily in filling stations in search of Fuel. For many
Nigerians, the hardship seems to have waste
their time; spending the whole day in the
filling stations queueing for petrol is just a
layer of tough times one faces living in
Nigeria.

At this time and season fuel scarcity
shouldn’t be added to the existing long list
of worries for Nigerians. Federal Government should do everything possible to make sufficient supply of petrol across the country. Here, fixing our moribund refineries is key. Yearly, budget are allocated for the revamping of Nigeria refineries; now is the time to utilize those monies.

Also the Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation Limited (NNPCL), oil marketers and indeed other stakeholders are to put the interest of the country first, it is only when this is done, that there will be light at the end of the tunnel.

Even though NNPC has placed order for repair of its 445,000 barrels per refineries, the focus of the government should be to boost in-country refining capacity.

The deputy governor, Cross River State, Prof. Ivare Esu and the executive vice chairman, National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, Prof. Mohammed Haruna presenting a kit to a trainee during flag-off of the training in Calabar, Cross River State. A cross section of trainees during the training in Calabar, Cross River State

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) said it is currently training over 100 young people drawn from across Calabar South and Calabar Municipal local government areas of Cross River State in modern methods of electrical installations and maintenance.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the week-long training billed to run from October 24 to 28, 2022, in Calabar, the state capital, the executive vice chairman of NASENI, Prof. Mohammed Haruna said the programme is the first phase of the skill development by the agency in the southernmost region of the country. The training, he said, is a part of the implementation of a series of directives from President Muhammadu Buhari to the agency to ensure the development of skills of the nation’s teeming youths necessary for job creation and self-employment generation.

The NASENI boss posited that the training is to get the trainees familiar with current advances and emerging technologies in electrical installations, repairs and maintenance, as well as build their competencies adequately, to meet the challenges and opportunities of the development anticipates of the shape and nature of the next industrial revolution.

“Development in cutting edge technologies or frontier technologies as the innovations that are shaping the fourth industrial revolution is named is, no doubt, disrupting many things and introducing constant changes and standards.

“The technologies include artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, the internet of things (IoT), big data, block chain, additive manufacturing (3D printing), autonomous vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles, gene editing, 5G network and smart grid and agitations for wireless electricity. Every aspect of human endeavour – agriculture, health, industry, transports, hospitality etc., require electricity, albeit well-advanced electric energy,” he said.

According to him, electrical installation, repairs and maintenance will no longer be [about] metre-conduiting, piping or trunking of cable channels and streaming overhead conductors. He said it is beyond the provision of lighting points and socket outlets but about automation, remote sensing, remote control and wireless operation.

Haruna stressed that the practitioners’ knowledge need regular updating to remain relevant and employable, remain so and create jobs for others. He added that the development of this skill is a key prerequisite for the development of a competent workforce for Nigeria.

Declaring the training open, the Cross River State governor, Sen. Benedict Ayade commended NASENI for the training and described it as one of the very important programmes the state-owned Construction and Fabrication Academy of West Africa aims to achieve.

Ayade averred that the edifice is a pointer to the administration’s commitment to the development of science and engineering infrastructure.

Represented by his deputy, Prof. Ivare Esu the governor urged the trainees to be pioneers in modern methods of electrical installations and maintenance in the state.

“I especially want to congratulate the 100 trainees who will be trained these few days in electrical installations. Make sure the starter packs are used for the purpose they were meant for. Pay close attention to the training because everything about electrical installations is there.

“We look forward to you being pioneers in these areas and training others. Please, do not fail us.”

Earlier, the chairman of the occasion and a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ochiglegor Idagbo pointed out the need for the country to look inwards and explore other options for engaging youths, especially with the rising challenge of unemployment.

“Today, when we are challenged and unemployment is increasing everyday, recent statistics show that [it is as high as] 42 per cent. If you look at the power to employ from both the Federal and state civil services, there is a limit to how many people they can employ, compared to the number of youths our universities churn out yearly. There is a need for us to begin to look to skill acquisition,” he said.

He commended NASENI for the initiative and tasked the trainees to be serious enough to look forward to excelling in their chosen profession.

In his goodwill message, a former Minister of Culture and Tourism, High Chief Edem Duke highlighted that the state has embarked on an eccentric desire for industrialisation and has broken the boundaries of some of the traditional assumptions and expectations by taking the initiative of establishing industries across the state.

“I try to marry this initiative of skills acquisition to the urgent, desperate need for those industries to be populated by properly trained, skilled workers who have acquired skills and training in the relevant sectors that will help to sustain these industries.

“To our beneficiaries who wil, at the end of this initiative, take up self-employment, it is an opportunity for you to stimulate micro-enterprises, especially in the rural parts of our state,” he added.

Giving the vote of thanks on behalf of other trainees, Ojong Ojong Ita, thanked President Muhammadu Buhari, the NASENI management led by its executive vice chairman, the state government and lawmakers representing various constituencies in the state for collaborating to bring the training to fruition.

He promised that he and others will make the state and the nation proud by learning the appropriate skills to help them excel, adding the equipment would be put to good use for the benefit of the nation.

The trainees were presented with starter packs comprising a complete electrical toolbox, multi-metre tester, cordless drilling machine, leather gloves and other safety equipment.

…Sentences Nigerian lady to one-year jail term over twitter post

President Muhammadu Buhari, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geofrey Onyeama, Chairman Nigerians Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa have kept mum over a brewing diplomatic row with the United Arab Emirates, UAE on recent hostile actions towards Nigerians.

The United Arab Emirates has stopped approving visas to Nigerians and has directed that all previously submitted applications should be put on hold.

Dubai Immigration, in the notice to its trade partners in Nigeria, which include travel agents, also stated that “all Dubai applications submitted are now rejected.”

“The UAE authorities informed us that the rejections will be sent in batches,” a travel agent told our correspondent on Saturday, as the source provided a copy of the notice.
The notice read in part, “Kindly advise your clients to resubmit C2=A0 applications when the issue is resolved between both governments.”

The travel agent stated that the new order would be due to the concerns between the Nigerian and UAE governments, as no reason was given by Dubai authorities for the visa application ban.

However, in August this year, the Federal Government advised Nigerians intending to travel to the UAE to be guided by the new visa regime in the country. It disclosed this in a statement by the spokesperson of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Francisca Omayuli.

The statement read in part, “The general public is invited to note and be guided that the government of the UAE has introduced a new visa regime and has stopped issuing tourist visas to persons under the age of 40 years, except for those applying for family visas.”

Sentences Nigerian lady to one-year jail term over twitter post

In a related development, a Nigerian woman, identified as @dunchichi on Twitter, has been reportedly sentenced to a one-year jail term by the United Arab Emirates government for a social media post, showing how some Nigerian nationals were illegally detained at Dubai international airport.

In 31st August, @dunchichi posted on Twitter how she was detained together with other Nigerians despite possessing a valid visa.
“I’m at Dubai international airport and myself and some tiger Nigerians with valid Visas are being held in a room hours after arriving with no explain and no information on what we can do. Please help me. There’s more than 20 of us,” she wrote.

But another user, @jerrydoubles, who claimed to be her relative, on Saturday announced that @dunchichi had been sent to jail for an offence relating to her earlier post in Dubai

He said, “It is sad and regrettably heartrending to tell you all that @dunchichi was sentenced on 12th Oct 22, to 1yr in jail in Dubai. Her family are devastated and Nigeria didn’t save her.”

“Her sentence came from the backdrop that she got a family visa to travel. But in fact, she was there with her sister. It got messy & complicated, she was released on arrival after being detained for several hours, only to be sentenced when she was returning to Nigeria.

“They are capitalising on the fact that she made a video then posted them on her Twitter timeline to narrate the ordeal. They said it’s cybercrime in their country. She went ahead to delete it. Still, that didn’t soften them. Now she is jailed #justicefordinci.”

He further added that her family were planning to protest her conviction at the Dubai consulate office in Abuja.

Meanwhile, Buhari, Abike, others are currently in South Korea Seoul, to participate in the First World Bio Summit, 2022.
