ADC asks INEC to investigate irregularities in Saturday’s by-elections

0

African Democratic Congress (ADC) had called on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate alleged irregularities witnessed during Saturday’s by-elections.

ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, stated this in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja.

Abdullahi also urged the commission to sanction any official found to have compromised and take necessary steps to restore public confidence in the nation’s electoral process.

He alleged that the by-elections were marked by irregularities, including reported violence, vote buying, manipulation and other administrative lapses.

“In one state, a vote buyer was caught with N25.9 million intended to procure and corrupt the will of the people.

“In another, election officials were themselves implicated in similar inducements.

“This is fast becoming the political culture of our electoral process,” he said.

Abdullahi also expressed concern about the failure of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in some polling units.

“Nigerians deserve elections that commands the implicit confidence of every citizen and respect of the rest of the world,” he said.

Abdullahi said that excuse should not be allowed from INEC, noting that the by-elections were a representation of what might happen in the 2027 general elections.

He, however, urged Nigerians not to judge the party by its performance in the by-elections, noting that ADC did not field candidates for most of the positions contested for during the exercise.

The ADC spokesman also called on civil society organisations, the media, faith leaders, Nigerians and all stakeholders to be united in defending the sanctity of the ballot.

EPL: Amorim hails two Man Utd players despite 1-0 defeat to arsenal

0

Manchester United boss, Ruben Amorim, has hailed the duo of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha despite their narrow 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Red Devils began their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 loss to the Gunners at Old Trafford.

Riccardo Calafiori scored the only goal of the match in the first half to give the visitors all three points.

Amorim has highlighted things his team must improve on, but also insisted they did a lot of stuff right.

Amorim told BBC Match of the Day: “We deserved more and we were the better team, that is clear but in the end we lost.

“We need to work on the things we need to improve. We need to defend set pieces. We were more aggressive and brave.

“In certain moments I think Bryan and Cunha helped a lot. We stuck to the plan even when the stadium is nervous, we continued to play the way we played and that will help us in the future.”

Nigerian govt arrests Ansaru, Al-Qaeda-linked notorious terrorist

0

The Nigerian government said it has arrested the leader of the Ansaru terrorist group with links to Al-Qaeda, Abu Baraa.

The terrorist, Baraa, is wanted for masterminding several high-profile attacks in Nigeria.

His arrest was made public on Saturday by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, during a press briefing at the National Counter-Terrorism Centre in Abuja at the weekend.

Ribadu said Baraa has been on the radar of security agencies since May and was picked up in July.

The NSA described the arrest as a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.

Ribadu said, “I am glad to inform you that we have successfully concluded a high-risk, intelligence-led, counter-terrorism operation that led to the capture of the top leadership of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan, commonly known as ANSARU, Nigeria’s Al-Qaeda affiliate.

“The group was first formed in January 2012 with a public declaration in Kano. It emerged as a splinter faction from Boko Haram, positioning itself as a ‘humane alternative.’

“However, its stated aim quickly turned to attacking Nigerian security operatives, civilian communities, and government infrastructure.

“The group publicly displayed the setting sun logo of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), signalling its ideological and operational alignment with global jihadist movements.”

Comfort Emmanson, Kwam1 Row: What Nigerian Aviation Controversies Reveal

0

By Moses Olili

The Nigeria’s aviation industry has come under intense scrutiny in the past week following a series of infractions. The incidents have sparked heated debates in the media, with critics faulting the government’s rushed response.

The hasty arrest of Ms. Comfort Emmanson, a passenger of Ibom Air, and her subsequent remand in Kirikiri Maximum Prison—a facility reserved for hardened criminals—over what many described as a minor infraction, sparked a frenzy online. Among the prominent voices was Peter Obi, who decried the apparent double standards, citing the case of Fuji star Kwam 1. While Emmanson was swiftly arrested and jailed without being heard, Kwam 1, allegedly shielded by his connections to influential figures in government, was seen to have been treated with remarkable leniency.

In what appeared to be an interventionist move, the federal government through Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo directed the airline to drop the charges against Ms. Comfort and lift her lifetime travel ban, a decision that secured her release. Meanwhile, Kwam 1’s suspension from air travel was reduced from six months to just one. The government’s intervention has been widely hailed as a pragmatic alternative dispute resolution mechanism aimed at averting protracted legal battles.

Nigerians react

In an interesting twist, a vox pop conducted by Nigerianewsphere revealed deeper public frustration. One respondent argued that the root of the fracas was economic rather than disciplinary, pointing to the exorbitant cost of flight tickets, which have reached record highs. This, he suggested, has left commuters irritable, easily triggered, and prone to conflict.

These unfortunate events have also raised serious questions about airport safety protocols. The handling of both incidents suggests that much remains to be desired in the conduct of security officials. It leaves one to wonder what proactive and civil measures are currently in place to forestall such occurrences and, more importantly, to guarantee passenger safety and confidence—especially in the face of mounting global security threats at airports.

Way forward

What is clear from these incidents is the urgent need for retraining aviation personnel on how to handle disruptive passengers without infringing on their civil rights. Alongside this, sensitisation campaigns should be introduced to educate air travellers on proper conduct when boarding flights, as ignorance remains a significant factor in many of these disputes. Finally, the government may need to revisit the issue of skyrocketing ticket prices. Air travel, as a modern necessity, should not remain an exclusive luxury that costs an arm and a leg. Making it more affordable could ease tensions, restore passenger confidence, and ensure a safer, more civil aviation sector.

EPL: Maresca names two Chelsea stars not good enough to replace Levi Colwill

0

Chelsea head coach, Enzo Maresca, has claimed he doesn’t have defenders that are good enough to replace Levi Colwill within his squad.

Maresca was speaking to reporters ahead of Chelsea’s first 2025/26 Premier League tie against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Colwill recently sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury that will rule him out for much of this season.

However, Maresca has now urged Chelsea to sign a new centre-back before the summer window closes.

When asked if either Wesley Fofana or Benoit Badiashile could fill in for Colwill, Maresca said: “He needs to be fit, first of all, and then he can do it.

“He played 45 minutes in that position and it was the first half against Bournemouth away if you remember – probably one of the worst halves since we started.

“Benoit playing in the middle, the Conference League final, first half, we were losing 1-0. Then we changed with Levi and we won 3-1. So it’s not the same,” he added.
