2026 WCQ: South Africa in trouble with FIFA – Oliseh on points deduction

0

Former Nigeria coach, Sunday Oliseh, has claimed South Africa are in trouble with FIFA.

According to the former Nigeria international, Bayana Bayana are in danger of receiving sanctions from the world football governing body, after they fielded an ineligible player in a 2026 World Cup qualifier earlier this year.

Teboho Mokoena featured against Lesotho in March despite picking up two yellow cards in previous qualifiers.

Although Lesotho have already lodged an official protest, FIFA are yet to announce their verdict.

But Oliseh, who is a member of FIFA’s Technical Group, said: “To the best of my knowledge South Africa is in trouble.

“If a team fields an ineligible player and a valid protest is upheld, standard penalties include the forfeiture of the match.

“The result is typically overturned to a 3-0 defeat for the offending team, regardless of the actual score, resulting in the loss of three points for South Africa in this case and an award of three points to Lesotho.”
