2027: Nobody will stop me from stopping Fubara’s re-election in Rivers — Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will not be deterred from working against the re-election bid of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, ahead of the 2027 general election.

Wike made the statement on Sunday during a visit to Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, accusing Governor Fubara of twice reneging on agreements reached between them. He insisted that the errors made during the 2023 political crisis would not be repeated.

According to the former Rivers State governor, attempts by some individuals to issue him instructions would not be entertained, stressing that no one has the authority to direct him on matters concerning Rivers State.

“I heard people saying they will call me and give me instructions. Let me tell you, there is nothing like instruction as far as Rivers State is concerned. Nobody will call me,” Wike said.

He added that after two failed agreements, there was no basis for further negotiations. “You had the first agreement, somebody reneged. The second agreement, he reneged. Which call will you accept again? We will not make that mistake again,” he stated.

Wike maintained that his stance was not driven by personal interest, noting that he was comfortable in his current position as FCT minister. Rather, he said his concern was about the people of Rivers State and the state’s political standing.

Reflecting on his tenure as governor, Wike said Rivers State commanded national respect and even successfully challenged the Federal Government on certain issues. He also questioned why calls to defend electoral mandates only emerged after the opposition had weakened.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that tensions between Wike and Fubara have recently resurfaced following the governor’s moves toward seeking re-election in 2027.
