Organ Harvesting: Ekiti Govt Sacks EKSUTH Surgeon over patients’ kidney removal

0

The Ekiti State Government has dismissed a surgeon at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) following allegations of the removal of a patient’s kidney.

The dismissal followed the findings of a seven-member panel of inquiry chaired by Professor Francis Faduyile, which was constituted about two weeks ago to investigate claims of organ harvesting made by a patient, Joshua Afolayan, who underwent surgery at the hospital.

Announcing the decision in a statement on Friday, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, said the action was based on the panel’s report.

Dr. Filani clarified that the panel concluded the incident was a surgical complication and not organ harvesting for ritual purposes, as earlier alleged. Despite this, he said the surgeon who had primary responsibility for the procedure has been dismissed with immediate effect.

According to the commissioner, all members of the surgical team present in the operating theater on the day of the surgery have also been suspended for one month, pending further administrative review.

He added that the Ekiti State Government would take full responsibility for Mr. Afolayan’s medical care, including bearing the cost of a kidney transplant, post-transplant treatment, and related medical maintenance for two years.

The commissioner assured residents of the state government’s commitment to accountability and to preventing a recurrence of such incidents in public health facilities.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has rolled out a pre-enrolment portal aimed at improving efficiency and user experience in the National Identification Number (NIN) registration process.

The development was announced on Friday by NIMC spokesperson, Kayode Adegoke, in a statement.

According to the commission, the Pre-Enrolment Portal allows applicants within Nigeria and in the Diaspora to capture and submit their biodata online ahead of physical visits to enrolment centres for biometric capture. The initiative is designed to reduce overcrowding and long waiting times at registration centres nationwide.

NIMC noted that the portal reflects the commitment of the Director-General, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, to enhance institutional performance through technology-driven solutions, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes efficient public service delivery, digital transformation, and inclusive development.

Key benefits of the portal include simplified online biodata submission, reduced congestion through appointment scheduling, improved data accuracy, secure handling of personal information, seamless upload of supporting documents, and faster, more efficient service delivery.

NIMC urged all prospective applicants to take advantage of the Pre-Enrolment Portal, describing it as a major step toward building a reliable and sustainable digital identity ecosystem to support national development.

Maresca stressed that he is committed to his role at Stamford Bridge, noting that his contract runs until 2029.

Trump suspends US green card lottery after campus shootings

0

United States President Donald Trump has suspended the green card lottery programme, according to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Noem said the action was taken at Trump’s direction, instructing the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to pause the Diversity Visa (DV) programme.

The decision follows reports linking Claudio Neves Valente, a permanent U.S. resident originally from Portugal, to shootings at Brown University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The incidents reportedly left two students and nine other people injured.

Valente entered the United States on a student visa in 2000 and became a permanent resident 17 years later through the green card system. Authorities later confirmed that the 48-year-old was found dead.

Reacting to the development, Noem wrote on X: “This heinous individual should never have been allowed in our country.”

The Diversity Visa programme, also known as the green card lottery, makes at least 50,000 immigrant visas available each year to applicants from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States.

Jubilation in US as Trump announces two-day holidays

0

United States President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order granting federal government employees time off on Christmas Eve, December 24, and Boxing Day, December 26.

The decision effectively gives federal workers a five-day break, as Christmas Day falls on a Thursday this year, creating excitement.

According to the executive order, all executive departments and federal agencies will be closed on Wednesday, December 24, and Friday, December 26, excusing employees from official duties on both days.

The additional days off bring the total number of federal holidays in the United States this year to 13.

This is not the first time Trump has approved Christmas Eve as a holiday for federal workers. During his first term in office, he granted the same privilege in 2019 and 2020, when December 24 fell on a Tuesday and a Thursday, respectively.

Earlier this year, in May, Trump also declared November 11 and May 8 as national holidays to mark victories in World War I and World War II.

EPL: Grealish snubs Saka, Palmer, names most skillful Player in Premier League

0

Everton midfielder Jack Grealish has overlooked Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka and Chelsea star Cole Palmer while naming the most skillful player in the English Premier League.

Grealish, who is currently on loan at Everton from Manchester City, instead picked his Toffees teammate, Iliman Ndiaye, for the honor.

Speaking on a recent Stan Sport podcast, the England international praised Saka and Palmer but drew a distinction between effectiveness and flair.

“Saka, for example, is so good—one of the best wingers in the world—but he’s not skillful,” Grealish said. “Palmer has pure skills. Iliman Ndiaye is the most skillful player in the Premier League.”

Ndiaye has impressed since joining Everton, registering four goals and two assists in 18 appearances across all competitions this season.

The 25-year-old forward joined David Moyes’ side in 2024 from French Ligue 1 outfit Marseille.
