NCC commits to regional digital integration—Maida

Massaquoi, Chairman Board of Commissioners, Liberia Telecommunications Authority; Kelechi Nwankwo, Director Corporate planning, strategy and Risk Management(NCC); Hon. Ben Fofana, Commissioner with oversight responsibility for Licensing and Regulation (LTA); Usman Mamman  Director, Licensing & Authorization (NCC) during a courtesy visit to the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja on 30th January, 2026

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), in line with its commitment to collaboration and regional integration, has reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening partnerships among telecommunications regulators within the West African sub-region.

In a statement on Sunday by Mrs. Nnenna Ukoha, Head of Public Affairs at NCC, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, reaffirmed the commitment when the Commission hosted a high-level delegation from the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) at the NCC’s Head Office in Abuja at the weekend.

Speaking during the LTA’s visit, Maida, who was represented by the Director of Corporate Planning, Strategy, and Risk Management at NCC, Dr. Kelechi Nwankwo, emphasized the Commission’s mandate to continually collaborate with sister regulatory institutions within the sub-region and beyond to drive the expansion of the digital economy and improve the living conditions of citizens.

He said, given the NCC’s long-standing commitment to regional cooperation through platforms such as the West Africa Telecommunications Regulators Assembly (WATRA), the Commission believes the region becomes stronger and more prosperous when all countries are interconnected.

The EVC further emphasized that collaboration remains a core driver of the NCC Board and that sustained engagement with regional partners is essential to advancing the interests of telecommunications consumers and various stakeholders.

Maida recalled the Commission’s advocacy for the recognition of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as critical national infrastructure within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), noting that Nigeria has already designated ICT as part of its critical national information infrastructure to give it the prominence required for sustainable growth.

He assured the Liberian delegation of the NCC’s readiness to provide support in advancing regional shared initiatives and translating discussions into actionable outcomes within the sub-region.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the LTA, Hon. Clarence Massaquoi, commended the NCC for making itself available in the spirit of regional coordination and collaboration, describing the engagement as critical to strengthening regulatory responsibilities across the sub-region.

Massaquoi acknowledged that Nigeria remains the largest economy in the region and a central player in Africa’s communications, security, and economic structures, and that progress made by Nigeria often has far-reaching impacts across other West African countries.

He explained that since his assumption of office as the Liberian chief telecom regulator, the LTA has prioritized strengthening relationships with regional institutions to support ECOWAS’ vision of integration, as effective regional integration cannot be achieved without affordable and reliable communications services, particularly in addressing cross-border roaming challenges.

The LTA Chairman disclosed that Liberia had signed bilateral agreements with The Gambia and Côte d’Ivoire and is at advanced stages of discussion with Ghana and Guinea-Conakry and that the Liberian regulator remained committed to active participation in WATRA.

Massaquoi further sought NCC’s support in regulatory capacity building and the sharing of best practices, particularly as Liberia reviews its licensing regime to reflect emerging technologies and align with regional standards.

The two regulators also underscored the centrality of shared commitment to deepen collaboration, identify priority areas for engagement, and advance initiatives that will promote seamless connectivity, regional integration, and socio-economic development across West Africa.

0

The Association of Motor Dealers of Nigeria (AMDON), Kebbi State Chapter, has condemned the alleged killing of one of its members, Tukur Alhaji Salihu, reportedly by operatives of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) of the Nigeria Customs Service, Zone B, Kaduna, attached to Kebbi State.

Salihu was said to have been shot on February 7, 2026, between 11:00 a.m. and 12 noon along the Nagari College–Illela Yari axis in Birnin Kebbi.

In a statement signed by the association’s secretary, Shehu Yusuf Bunza, AMDON described the incident as disturbing, linking it to wider concerns over alleged extrajudicial killings and human rights abuses.

The association said the incident has thrown its members and residents into fear, noting that it occurred in broad daylight.

AMDON called on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. It also urged the Kebbi State Government to intervene.

According to the statement, Salihu was a passenger at the time of the incident and was allegedly shot several times. He was rushed to a hospital, where he later died the same night.

The deceased was buried in his hometown of Argungu. He is survived by two wives, seven children, and his parents.

The association further called on the Nigeria Customs Service to investigate the matter and put measures in place to prevent a recurrence. It also appealed to the Kebbi State Government to provide support to the bereaved family.

AMDON said it has formally reported the incident to the appropriate authorities and appealed to the public to remain calm and law-abiding. The group also urged human rights organizations to closely monitor the case to ensure accountability.

Manchester City staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Liverpool 2-1 in their English Premier League clash at Anfield on Sunday, closing the gap on league leaders Arsenal.

Liverpool took the lead in the 74th minute when Dominik Szoboszlai curled home a superb free kick to send the home fans into celebration.

City, however, responded strongly and was rewarded when Bernardo Silva restored parity, setting up a tense finale to the encounter.

The visitors completed the turnaround deep into stoppage time, as Erling Haaland calmly converted a penalty in the 90th minute to hand Pep Guardiola’s side all three points.

Moments later, Liverpool’s Szoboszlai was shown a red card for a late challenge on Haaland during injury time.

The victory takes Manchester City to 50 points, cutting Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table to six points, with the Gunners still leading on 56 points.

Nigerian forward, Victor Osimhen was on target once again as Galatasaray cruised to a 3-0 victory over Caykur Rizespor in their Turkish Super Lig encounter.

The Nigeria international continued his fine scoring form, netting his 15th goal of the season after also finding the back of the net in Galatasaray’s previous league outing against Kayserispor.

Osimhen sealed the win for Okan Buruk’s side with the third goal of the match, striking 11 minutes from time to put the result beyond doubt.

The 27-year-old has now scored nine league goals for the Yellow and Reds this season, underlining his importance to the Istanbul giants.

Galatasaray remain top of the Super Lig table with 52 points from 21 matches and will look to maintain their lead when they host Eyüpspor in their next league fixture on Friday.

Sit-at-home cancellation: We won, they suffered defeat—APC chieftain, Igbokwe mocks IPOB

0

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Joe Igbokwe, has said those he described as “butchers” in the South-East have realized that their efforts amounted to nothing following the cancellation of the Monday sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Igbokwe made the remark on Sunday while reacting to IPOB’s announcement ending the sit-at-home directive across the region.

In a post on his Facebook page titled “No place to hide anymore in Igboland,” the APC chieftain claimed that those behind the sit-at-home had suffered an unexpected defeat and were now the same people calling it off.

According to him, there is “no place to hide anymore” in the Southeast, insisting that the campaign had failed despite the damage it caused to the region.

Igbokwe, who used strong language in his post, accused those he blamed for the sit-at-home of disgracing and setting the South-East back by decades through violence, fear, and economic disruption.

He said the next challenge was for relevant authorities to determine how to address the aftermath of the sit-at-home and prevent a recurrence.

Igbokwe raised questions about how to “clean up the mess” left behind, how to ensure those responsible are brought to justice, and how to stop such actions from resurfacing in the future.

He stressed that the issue should now be handled decisively by authorities to restore normalcy and safeguard the region from further setbacks.

“They have suffered a crushing defeat they never expected. Did you see one of the butchers of SE, the compound illiterates and the murderers, the empty heads, one of the children of hate reading the address, the vagabonds of SE, the dregs of SE, the worst of the SE telling us what to do in the land of educated champions, men and women? We have won the battle.”

Nigerian Newsphere reports that IPOB cancelled Monday’s sit-at-home permanently in a statement on Sunday.

IPOB officially cancels Monday sit-at-home in the South-East

0

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the total and permanent cancellation of the Monday sit-at-home across the South-East, with immediate effect from Monday, February 9, 2026.

IPOB made the announcement in a press statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, saying the directive came directly from its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

According to the group, “The Monday sit-at-home across the South-East is officially and permanently cancelled with effect from tomorrow, Monday, February 9, 2026.”

IPOB said Kanu took the decision to allow normal life to return to the region, stressing that the order was aimed at ensuring that schools reopen fully and residents resume their lawful businesses without fear or intimidation.

“He has once again staked everything on the line to ensure that our children return to school every Monday and that our people go about their lawful businesses without fear, intimidation, or molestation,” the statement said.

The group described the directive as final, insisting that there was no longer any justification for staying at home on Mondays. It directed that markets, schools, offices, transport services and all economic activities must resume fully across the South-East.

IPOB warned that any individual or group attempting to enforce sit-at-home going forward would be acting against Kanu’s direct command, describing such persons as enemies of the Biafran cause.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has made it abundantly clear that anyone enforcing sit-at-home from this moment forward is acting against his express order,” the group said, adding that such actions would be resisted.

The group also alleged that some “enemies of Biafra” could attempt false-flag operations to instil fear and discourage people from resuming normal activities, urging residents to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding.

However, IPOB cautioned state governments against punishing traders who may still choose to stay at home out of personal conviction. It warned governors, including Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, against intimidation, demolition threats or forced market closures, saying such actions would be resisted.

On market redevelopment, the group said any renovation or reconstruction project must involve the consent of all stakeholders, with adequate temporary trading spaces provided before commencement.

Calling for unity, IPOB urged residents of the South-East to ignore attempts to sow discord and resume normal activities.

“We therefore call on all our people across the South-East to come out tomorrow, open their shops, go to work, and send their children to school without fear. The era of Monday sit-at-home is over,” the statement added.

Earlier on Saturday, a viral video featuring IPOB members led by Igwe Butuzo and Gentle De Yahoo also announced the cancellation of the sit-at-home, claiming it followed an order from Nnamdi Kanu.

Reacting, Kanu’s legal consultant, Aloy Ejimakor, said the IPOB leader had since July 2024 called for the discontinuation of the Monday sit-at-home.

Ejimakor told Nigerian Newssphere that Kanu had consistently opposed any attempt to enforce the civil disobedience in his name, noting that the position had never changed.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that the development comes amid recent tensions in Anambra State, where the Onitsha Main Market was temporarily shut over compliance with the sit-at-home before being reopened after traders agreed to abandon the action.

Nnamdi Kanu is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Correctional Centre following his conviction on terrorism-related charges in November 2025.

Why Burna Boy ahead of Wizkid, Davido—2Face

0

Legendary Nigerian musician Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Face, has explained why Burna Boy is currently ahead of his colleagues Wizkid and Davido.

The African Queen crooner added his voice to the debate over who is a bigger artist between Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy in a recent episode of the Mic On podcast.

He, however, noted that his choice wasn’t necessarily inspired by talent, artistry, or success, but based on their current performances.

“Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido are all my favorites. But if I must be put on the spot to compare them, I think Burna Boy is at the top of the game right now.

“And my choice isn’t based on talent or artistry because artistry is subjective. I don’t have details of their bank account balances or other personal information. But from what I can measure from at least common sense and understanding of the music world, I think Burna Boy is currently at the top of this chain, not just in Nigeria but also in Africa and the world,” he claimed.

Electoral Act: Senate focused on Nigerians’ interests, not EU-funded NGOs, individuals —Akpabio

0

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said the 10th National Assembly is committed to serving the collective interest of Nigerians, not non-governmental organizations or individuals funded by the European Union.

Akpabio accused some civil society organizations (CSOs) and public commentators of unfairly attacking the National Assembly without a proper understanding of the legislative process.

He spoke on Saturday at the launch of The Burdens of Legislators in Nigeria, a book authored by former senator Effiong Bob, held at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre, Kado, Abuja. The event was chaired by a former Senate President, David Mark.

According to Akpabio, premature judgments by outsiders, particularly on the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act, were harmful to democratic governance.

“There is a man who heads an NGO or a CSO. He was on television the other day abusing the Senate—the same Senate he makes money from. He said, “This Senate is the worst since the world was founded,” Akpabio said.

He stressed that the Electoral Act amendment process was still ongoing and far from completion.

“The Electoral Act amendment is incomplete, yet they are already on television talking. They don’t understand lawmaking,” he added.

The Senate President explained that legislation goes through several stages, including motions, first and second readings, committee work, public hearings, and the adoption of votes and proceedings.

Until these processes are concluded, he said it was wrong for anyone to conclude that the Senate had failed.

“When we bring out the votes and proceedings, any senator has the right to rise and say, ‘On clause three, this was what we agreed upon.’ Only then can you talk about what the Senate has done or not done,” he said.

Akpabio described some critics as “mouth legislators” and challenged them to contest elections if they truly wanted to participate in lawmaking instead of criticizing from television studios.

He also dismissed claims that resolutions reached during legislative retreats were binding, noting that retreats were consultative forums and not part of the formal lawmaking process.

According to him, attempts by some NGOs to influence senators using externally funded policy papers do not amount to legitimate legislative input.

“We will not be intimidated. Our lawmaking will reflect the feelings of the generality of Nigerians, not that of one NGO or somebody getting money from the European Union,” Akpabio said.

EPL: Wolves coach Edwards singles out one Nigerian player in defeat to Chelsea

0

Wolves head coach Rob Edwards has praised Tolu Arokodare for his performance in the club’s 3-1 defeat to Chelsea at Molineux.

Chelsea stormed into a commanding three-goal lead in the first half, powered by a historic hat trick from Cole Palmer.

Arokodare pulled one back for the hosts in the 54th minute, scoring Wolves’ only goal of the match. It was the Nigeria international’s second goal of the Premier League season.

Edwards commended the striker’s work rate and overall contribution despite the disappointing result.

“Great for him (Arokodare). Really, really good. He did some really good things today and worked hard for the team,” Edwards said after the game.

The 24-year-old forward has now featured in 20 league matches for Wolves this season.
