The General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Emmanuel Ugboaja, has died.
According to Vanguard, NLC President Joe Ajaero disclosed Ugboaja’s death in a letter from the late labour leader’s family to members of the Congress National Executive Council, NEC.
Ugboaja was the fifth General Secretary of the NLC and a veteran trade unionist and lawyer.
He was appointed General Secretary of the labour centre in August 2019.
Born on May 15, 1966, Ugboaja obtained his law degree from the University of Calabar in 1987.
According to the NLC’s historical biography, he was the first Nigerian lawyer to work full-time for a trade union.
His death marks a significant loss to the Nigerian labour movement, where he played a prominent role in trade union activities for several years.
