Senegal has refused to hand back the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy following a controversial decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to award the 2025 title to Morocco.
CAF ruled the final a walkover in favor of hosts Morocco, granting them a 3-0 victory after Senegal walked off the pitch during stoppage time. The decision upheld Morocco’s claim that Senegal violated the rules of the game by leaving the field after a penalty was awarded for the final kick.
Senegal’s head coach, Pape Thiaw, had ordered the Teranga Lions to abandon the match in protest.
Despite the ruling, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has firmly rejected CAF’s decision. Secretary General Abdoulaye Sow described the ruling as “unjust, unprecedented, and unacceptable,” accusing the continental body of corruption and confirming that the trophy would remain in Senegal.
