BREAKING: 2027: ADC demands INEC Chairman’s resignation

0

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the immediate resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan.

The demand was made on Thursday by the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark, during a world press conference in Abuja.

Speaking to journalists, Mark urged President Bola Tinubu to remove the INEC chairman from office if he fails to step down voluntarily, citing a lack of confidence in his ability to oversee credible elections.

According to him, the current leadership of the electoral body has demonstrated incompetence and cannot be trusted to conduct a free and fair general election in 2027.

“We demand the immediate resignation or removal of the INEC chairman. We also call on Prof. Amupitan and all national commissioners to step down without delay,” Mark stated.

He added that the party no longer has faith in the commission’s leadership, insisting they are incapable of delivering credible electoral outcomes.

INEC also stated that it would not recognise Nafiu Bala Gombe, who is pursuing a court declaration as national chairman.

In addition, the electoral body announced the suspension of recognition for all factions within the ADC, declaring that it would not monitor any conventions or congresses organised by groups linked to the affected leaders.

According to INEC, the measures will remain in place pending the final ruling of a substantive case before the Federal High Court.

Aloy Ejimakor, legal consultant to Nnamdi Kanu, has urged restraint among supporters, calling on Ndigbo to be mindful of their social media conduct.

Flutterwave has announced that it has obtained a banking license from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), positioning the fintech firm to operate as a full-fledged financial institution.

The development was disclosed on Thursday by the company’s Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Olugbenga Agboola.

Agboola described the milestone as a defining moment in Flutterwave’s decade-long journey to build financial infrastructure across Africa.

According to him, the license will enable businesses to manage their entire financial operations seamlessly on the platform.

“Today, @theflutterwave announces a Nigerian banking license. It is a defining step in our 10-year journey to build the financial infrastructure powering Africa’s future,” he wrote on X.

The announcement comes amid broader regulatory developments, as the CBN recently selected Flutterwave, Paystack, and other firms for the initial phase of its pilot supervision program for virtual asset service providers (VASPs).

Flutterwave has continued to expand its footprint in the financial services space. Earlier this year, the company acquired Nigerian open banking startup Mono in an all-stock deal valued at up to $40 million.

Heavy security at INEC Headquarters as over ADC’s protest

0

There was a heavy security presence at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja on Thursday, following the commission’s decision to remove the National Working Committee (NWC) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from its official portal.

The development comes amid rising tension after the electoral body announced the de-listing on Wednesday.

DAILY POST gathered that more than 2,000 Nigerians had earlier converged around the INEC headquarters shortly after the decision was made public.

The gathering was largely made up of members of the ADC, the Obidient Movement, and other groups, who had also scheduled a protest tagged “Occupy INEC” for Thursday at the commission’s Maitama office.

However, a visit to the area showed that access to the INEC headquarters was heavily restricted, with security vehicles mounted at strategic points around the परिसर.

Security operatives, including personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other agencies, were seen maintaining a strong presence to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

The tension follows INEC’s decision to remove the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola as national chairman and national secretary of the ADC, respectively, from its portal.

The commission also stated that it would not recognize Nafiu Bala Gombe, who is laying claim to the party’s chairmanship through the courts.

INEC further announced the suspension of recognition for all factions within the ADC and said it would not monitor any conventions or congresses organized by groups linked to the affected leaders.

According to the commission, the measures will remain in place pending the final determination of a substantive suit before the Federal High Court.

Lagos Govt to seal Access Bank branches

0

The Lagos State Government has initiated moves to seal facilities belonging to Access Bank Plc in Oniru, Victoria Island, over alleged environmental infractions linked to poor wastewater management.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed that the action followed a whistleblower complaint that prompted officials of the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) to inspect one of the bank’s premises.

According to him, the inspection revealed that the facility’s wastewater treatment plant was not operational, resulting in the discharge of untreated fecal matter into public drainage channels, thereby causing environmental pollution in the area.

Wahab further stated that attempts by enforcement officials to take regulatory action were resisted.

“During the enforcement visit, officials of LSWMO were denied access to seal the facility. Security personnel and management representatives of the bank resisted our officers and, in the process, attacked members of the enforcement team,” he said.

He added that samples of the effluent discharged from the premises were taken for laboratory analysis, with results confirming the presence of untreated waste.

The state government said it would pursue legal action, including obtaining court orders for the arrest and prosecution of those involved in the alleged assault on its officials.

Authorities also noted that enforcement officers would return to the premises, with reinforcement, to carry out closure in line with environmental regulations.

“There will be no sacred cows in the enforcement of environmental laws. Any individual or organization found violating environmental regulations, regardless of status, will be held accountable,” Wahab added.

In a related development, the LSWMO, acting on another whistleblower report, carried out a joint operation on Wednesday night and sealed another Access Bank branch on Land Bridge Avenue, Oniru.

Officials said the branch was found discharging raw fecal matter indiscriminately into drainage systems, causing offensive odor and environmental degradation.

The government maintained that the facility would face sanctions in accordance with existing environmental laws.

Olympique de Marseille midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg is the highest-paid player outside PSG, ranking 13th with an estimated monthly salary of €500,000.

2027: INEC’s derecognition of David Mark ADC leadership dashes opposition party’s hope to unseat Tinubu

0

Uncertainty has gripped the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to remove the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as national chairman and national secretary of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC also announced the suspension of recognition for all factions within the ADC and said it would not monitor any conventions or congresses organized by groups linked to the embattled leadership.

The development, according to Nigerian Newssphere, has triggered confusion and anxiety among party members and stakeholders.

The electoral body said its decision was prompted by a lingering leadership crisis within the ADC, as well as a recent Court of Appeal judgment in Suit No. CA/ABJ/145/2026, which it noted had further complicated the dispute.

INEC disclosed that it received a letter dated March 16, 2026, from Suleiman Usman (SAN) & Co., cautioning against recognizing Nafiu Bala Gombe as acting national chairman while the matter remains in court.

The Commission maintained that it would not recognize Bala, who is central to the dispute and is seeking judicial affirmation as national chairman. It added that its position would remain until the substantive suit before the Federal High Court is determined.

National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said INEC remains neutral in the crisis.

However, the decision has drawn sharp reactions from the ADC and other political figures.

ADC alleges political pressure

The ADC rejected INEC’s stance, describing it as a misinterpretation of the Court of Appeal ruling.

In a statement posted on X, the party’s national publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, accused INEC of yielding to pressure from the federal government, which he claimed is uneasy about the party’s growing influence.

He described the Commission’s decision as contradictory and lacking in logic, adding that the party would soon announce its next line of action.

Lawyer raises concerns over 2027 elections

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong also criticized INEC, warning that the development could undermine credible elections ahead of 2027.

Effiong questioned the basis of the dispute, arguing that the party’s leadership changes were internally resolved and ratified by its National Executive Committee. He expressed concern over what he described as increasing judicial interference in internal party matters.

He further alleged a possible attempt to weaken opposition parties, suggesting that INEC’s actions could favor the ruling party.

Melaye and Sani weigh in.

Former Kogi West senator Dino Melaye condemned the situation, alleging that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is attempting to turn Nigeria into a one-party state. He vowed that opposition figures would resist such moves.

On his part, former lawmaker Shehu Sani likened the ADC’s situation to inheriting a “used vehicle” plagued with multiple structural issues, noting that such challenges are common in older political parties.

Alleged resignation letter surfaces

Amid the controversy, an alleged resignation letter attributed to Nafiu Bala surfaced online. Dated May 18, 2025, the letter indicated that Bala had stepped down from the party’s National Working Committee effective May 26, 2025, to facilitate restructuring.

Although the authenticity of the document remains unverified, its emergence has added another layer to the already tense leadership crisis within the ADC.
