From Spaghatti to Egg—How Buhari changed Nigerians’ dining tables, Kitchens in 8 Years

0

In less than ten days, President Muhammadu Buhari will hand over to Bola AhmedTinubu after eight years in the saddle. He promised to change the country—in the kitchens and on dining tables, Buhari’s changes have been felt.

“You voted for change and now change has come,” an elated Buhari said in his acceptance speech in 2015 after former President Goodluck Jonathan called to concede defeat.

During the campaign, there was a picture where President Buhari and Osinbajo had sachet Milo, a popular cocoa beverage, on their dining table. Buhari must pay more than double for it if he buys it now. It was N30 during that period, it is now sold for N90.

One exceptional food Nigerians, mostly young people, like to cook is Jollof spaghetti—the ingredients are simple, pasta, egg, fish, tomato paste, oil, and spices.

Before Buhari, a pack of pasta costs N90, a piece of egg goes for N30, tomato paste is N25, a sachet of vegetable oil is N30 and small mackerel fish is N200.

2023 to cook the same spaghetti jollof, one will need N600 for the pasta, N100 for tomato paste, N100 for a piece of egg, N100 for a sachet of oil and same mackerel fish costs N800.

The jollof rice index released by SBM intelligence shows that Nigerians can no longer afford jollof rice as the price continues to grow under Buhari.

The index released in 2016 shows that it costs N4,087 to prepare jollof rice for a family of five or six. The latest report for the first quarter shows that same portion cost N10,882.

When Buhari came on board, a bag of sachet water was sold for N70; the same goes for N250 in many states nationwide.

Nimot Shekoni, a baker in Abuja, lamented the increment in prices of baking ingredients.

“Even four years ago, a mudu of flour cost N300, a 500gram of butter was N200—it is not easy to bake cakes and still make profit,” he said.

It is not only small bakers like Shekoni who feel the impact of increased food items. Big bread makers have increased prices by almost 400% between 2015 and 2023.

One big loaf of bread sold for average of N250-N300 in 2015; the same bread now sells for N800-N1000.

Although experts have blamed the Russia/Ukraine war for the increment in prices of the basic item, many Nigerians believe that their kitchens and dining tables have been feeing the heat long before the war in Europe.

Ahead of the exit of Buhari, certainly every Nigeria would have felt the impact of his ‘Change mantra’ whether for good or bad.

The Anambra State Police Command said it had raided a camp occupied by hoodlums in the Ogbaru Local Government Area and arrested two persons concerning the killing of two US Consulate officials on Tuesday.

The state police commissioner, CP Echeng Echeng, stated this on Thursday during a press conference in Awka, Anambra State.

Echeng said police operatives moved swiftly immediately after the command got information of the attack. He said the operatives combed the area and raided a camp used by gunmen in the area and found that it had been deserted, but were able to arrest two persons, who are now helping police in their investigation.

He said: “As you are probably aware, a team of officials from the Lagos Consulate of the United States of America and their police escorts (USA) were ambushed on 16/05/2023.

“Consequently, a joint team of Mobile Policemen and troops of the Nigerian Navy stationed in Onitsha was immediately deployed to the area. Upon arrival at the scene of the incident, the joint security team sighted and engaged the assailants in a shot-out, but they escaped through a nearby forest.

“Yesterday – 17/05/2023, joint security forces comprising police tactical teams from the command and troops of the Nigerian Army as well as the Nigerian Navy raided a camp in Ogwuaniocha community of Ogbaru LGA, which was suspected to be the hideout of the assailants, but discovered that it had been deserted. Two persons of interest were arrested and they currently assisting the police in the investigation. The criminal camp was razed down by the joint security team.”

The CP said the arrested men have had their contacts traced through their phone conversation and that the command is gradually closing in on the killers.

Asked about the level of cooperation the command has received from the US government since the incident, Echeng said the US embassy has been cooperative and has also helped the command with needed information on the officials and their mission to Anambra.

He said this was not the best time to apportion blame about whether the officials sought security clearance from the command before coming into the state or not, adding that the priority now is to get the perpetrators to face the law.

He stated: “The preliminary investigation conducted by the command, following the incident, revealed that five male officials of the USA consulate and four armed Mobile Police escorted from Lagos on a mission to assess the impact of erosion in Ogbaru LGA were travelling in a convoy of two vehicles when they suddenly came under attack by armed men who targeted them with gunfire and set their vehicles ablaze.”

The release by the CP further revealed the identity of the officials who were involved in the attack.

They include; Jefferson Obayuwane (RTD DSS personnel), Sunday Prince Ubong, Ekene Nweke, Hassan Etila, Avwuvie Kaye Monday, Bukar . A. Kabuiki – (Police), Emmanuel Lukpata – (Police), Friday Morgan -(Police) and Adamu Andrew – (Police).

“Regrettably, seven persons (including three of the consulate officials and four Mobile Police escorts) were murdered during the attack, while two other officials of the consulate are yet to be found.

“The deceased police officers include Inspr. Bukar Adams, Inspr. Friday Morgan, Inspr. Adam Andrew and Inspr. Emmanuel Lupata all of Squadron 23, Police Mobile Force, Lagos. No USA citizen was among the casualties.

“Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased persons have all been recovered and deposited in a morgue while the state police command and other security agencies are working round-the-clock, in concert with the Government of Anambra State, to find and rescue the missing officials. In this regard, I call on members of the public who can provide information about the identities and locations of the culprits to assist the police with such information timeously kindly.

“On behalf of the Anambra State Police Command, I wish to seize this opportunity to condole the families and friends of the deceased persons and the USA Consul over this tragic incident. May I assure you all of the resolve and determination of the command and other security agencies to track down the perpetrators.”

The court refused to recognize the two factions and adjourned the hearing to Friday, May 19.

But speaking on the matter while appearing on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Thursday, Apapa said he will be in the court on Friday.

He also accused the presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi and the suspended National Chairman, Julius Abure of allegedly sponsoring thugs to beat him out of the Presidential Petition Tribunal on Wednesday.

According to him, he was in the court on Wednesday because “It was my responsibility as the authentic acting National Chairman of the party to exercise my authority as representative of the party”.

Labour Party:Factional leader Apapa carpets Peter Obi over leadership crisis

…Denies receiving N500M to scuttle Obi’s petition”.

The acting National Chairman of the crisis-ridden Labour Party (LP), Alhaji Basiru Lamidi Apapa, has said that the lack of respect for the rule of law by the Presidential candidate of the party in the February election, Mr Peter Gregory Obi was responsible for the leadership crisis rocking the party.

He said that the leadership crisis would not have erupted if Obi had withdrawn recognition from the suspended National Chairman of the party, Mr Julius Abure, based on the order of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.

Apapa, however, asked Obi to wade into the dispute objectively to resolve the lingering crisis amicably.

Apapa, at a media briefing after his attack at the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja on Wednesday, demanded that Obi be unbiased to resolve the disputed chairmanship tussle.

At the media briefing attended by the Deputy National Chairman of the party in the North, Mike Ayuba Auta, National Publicity Secretary, Olufemi Abayomi Arabambi and one of the women leaders Mrs Rukayat Salihu Umar, Apapa said that what happened at the Presidential Court in which altercation broke out in the presence of Peter Obi, was disgraceful and a test to Obi’s leadership quality.

Apapa said that the leadership crisis would have been put behind them if Obi had respected the order of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, which ordered Julius Abure and three others from parading themselves as National Officers of the party over their indictment for forgery and perjury.

Tracing the genesis of the leadership crisis, Apapa said that immediately after the order of the Court was served on the party, he was unanimously selected in an acting capacity as the National Chairman of the party.

He said it was wrong of Obi to be according to respect to Abure inspite of the order of the Court and as a presidential candidate seeking justice from the same Court of law.

On the alleged receipt of 500 million Naira from external forces to destabilize the party, Apapa vehemently denied receiving any money or being influenced by anybody or any group to work against the party.

He also said that it was wrong of Peter Obi to have claimed not to know him, adding that he worked closely with and even travelled on the same flights with Peter Obi throughout his Presidential electioneering campaign.

Therefore, he appealed to Obi to be open-minded, neutral and objective to stop the crisis.

Also speaking at the briefing, the Deputy National Chairman of the Party in the North, Mike Ayuba Auta, denied that the All Progressive Congress (APC) was behind the crisis, adding that the allegation was baseless and unfounded.

Auta apologized to Nigerians, who gave Labour Party over 6 million votes during the last presidential election, adding that they should not be discouraged by the current leadership crisis and assured that the dispute will soon be resolved.

The Labour Party has claimed that the Bashiru Lamidi Apapa faction of the party, which stormed the Presidential Election Petition Court on Wednesday morning, was disgraced out of the premises.

Nigerian Newssphere had reported that Apapa and the faction of the suspended National Chairman of the party, Mr Julius Abure clashed during the court proceeding.

In a tweet on its official handle, the party claimed that the Apapa faction was in the court to truncate the court hearing.

Drama as Labour Party Factions clash at Presidential Election Petition Court

Drama as the Presidential Election Petition Court on Wednesday in Abuja refused to recognize the two factions laying claims to the national leadership of the Labour Party (LP).

In the presence of the presidential candidate of the party in the last general elections, Mr Peter Gregory Obi, two factions of the party had engaged themselves for recognition and to be recorded as the official Representatives of the party in the pre- hearing of Obi’s petition.

The battle for recognition was ignited by Mrs Dudu Maluga who sat by the right hand side of Peter Obi and introduced herself as National Women Leader of the Labour Party and representative of the party in the petition.

Drama erupted when another faction sitting opposite Peter Obi murmured loudly and sought to be recognised as the authentic Leaders of the party.

One of them who introduced himself as Alhaji Bashiru Lamidi Apapa got up and announced himself as the acting national Chairman of the party.

Following the confusion that ensued, the Chairman of the Court, Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani ruled against the two factions that the Court would not recognize or record their respective presence as Representatives of the party.

The two factions were however, allowed to remain in the court room but without being recognized.

Obi who was in the court to witness proceedings kept mute while the drama lasted.

Similarly, the suspended National Chairman of the party, Mr Julius Abure who sat closest to Peter Obi did not intervene throughout the drama.

Indications that the two factions would clash in the court room first emerged during the struggle to get entrance to the court room with the two factions claiming and counter claiming to be authentic leaders of the party.

It took efforts of the security operatives in the court before security breaches could be averted.
