Nigeria’s Telecom Access Gaps Drop by 53 per cent-NCC

0

The number of identified areas of clusters across Nigeria without access to the telecommunications services has been reduced by 53.1 per cent as at the end of 2022.

The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, disclosed this at a recent telecoms industry stakeholders forum in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state.

Danbatta, who was represented at the forum by the Head, Pre-Licensing at the Commission, Usman Mamman, said from 207 clusters of access gaps in 2013, the industry has witnessed a reduction to 97 as of end 2022 by bridging 110 clusters of access gaps, representing a 53.1 per cent reduction.

He said by implication, the number of Nigerians who fell within the access gap which were estimated at 37 million in 2013 has been reduced to 27 million, following increased access to telecoms services by those hitherto not digitally included.

Access gaps refer to the cluster of communities or grouped areas in different parts of the country that are bereft of access to telecom services and till date, the NCC has reduced clusters of access gap by more than half.

Danbatta said, “We have worked tirelessly to ensure we bring telecom services to people living in rural, unserved, and underserved areas of this country, totalling 37 million people courtesy of the consultancy that was conducted in 2013.

“By 2019, we had succeeded in reducing the clusters of access gaps to 114 through the deployment of the necessary infrastructure needed to bring services to people living in rural, unserved and underserved areas of the country. The deployment of infrastructure is in terms of base transceiver stations, which resulted in the reduction of Nigerians in those clusters from 37 million to 31 million in 2019.

“By 2022, we have reduced the clusters of access gaps to 97 from 207 in 2013. The number of Nigerians again have come down from 37 million in 2013 to 27 million as we speak. We achieved this by deploying, from 2009 to 2011, a total of 79 new base transceiver stations,” he said.

Danbatta stated that in 2013 to 2018, the telecom sector also witnessed the deployment of additional 124 base transceiver stations while from 2019 to 2022, a total of 364 base transceiver stations were deployed.

“So far, the total number of base transceiver stations we have deployed to date between the time the access gaps were identified till the end of 2022 are 567,” he said.

While describing the reduction in access gap so far as a landmark, Danbatta, however, said the Commission will not rest on its oars as it thrives to ensure that the remaining 27 million Nigerians, who currently lack access to telecoms services, are provided with services.

Meanwhile, the EVC said part the regulatory interventions of the Commission to bridge the remaining 97 access across the country to provide ubiquitous connectivity in all the nooks and crannies of Nigeria are the issuance of the Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) Licences and the deployment of Fifth Generation (5G) networks, among others.

Democracy Day: Full text of President Tinubu address to Nigerians

0

TEXT OF DEMOCRACY DAY NATIONAL BROADCAST BY PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU ON JUNE 12, 2023.

Fellow Nigerians,

2. It is exactly three decades today that Nigerians went to the polls to exercise their inalienable right to elect a President of their choice to lead the transition from military dictatorship to a representative government of the people.

3. The abortion, by military fiat, of the decisive victory of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the June 12, 1993, presidential election, up to that time, the fairest and freest election in the country’s political evolution, turned out, ironically, to be the seed that germinated into the prolonged struggle that gave birth to the democracy we currently enjoy since 1999.

4. In rising to strongly oppose the arbitrary annulment of the will of the majority of Nigerians as expressed in that historic election, the substantial number of our people who participated in the struggle to de-annul the election signified their fierce commitment to enthroning democracy as a form of government that best ennobles the liberty, the dignity of the individual and the integrity as well as the stability of the polity. The fierce opposition to the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election and the unrelenting pro-democracy onslaught it unleashed was the equivalent of the battle against colonial rule by our founding fathers that resulted in the gaining of Nigeria’s independence in 1960.

5. Just like the anti-colonial movement, the pro-June 12 vanguard demonstrated, once again, the enduring validity of the 19th century historian, Arnold Toynbee’s eternal postulation, that civilization and societies experience progress as they are forced to respond to challenges posed by the environment. The unjust annulment of a widely acknowledged free and fair election was a challenge that elicited resistance by a resurgent civil society, leading ultimately to the attainment of our ‘second independence’ as exemplified by the return of democratic governance in 1999.

6. Fellow compatriots, we celebrate a day that has remained a watershed in our nation’s history, not just today, but for every June 12, for the endless future that our beloved country shall exist and wax stronger and stronger, generations of Nigerians will always remind themselves that the democracy that is steadily growing to become the defining essence of our polity was not gifted to us on a silver platter.

7. We can easily recall the sacrifice and martyrdom of Chief MKO Abiola, the custodian of the sacred mandate that was so cruelly annulled. He sacrificed his life in unyielding, patriotic defense of the ideals of democracy as symbolized in his choice, by his fellow countrymen and women, as their duly-elected President. There was an easier choice for him. It was to forgo the justice of his cause and opt for the path of ease and capitulation in the face of the tyranny of power. To his eternal credit and immortal glory, Abiola said no. He demonstrated the time-tested eternal truth that there are certain ideals and principles that are far more valuable than life itself.

8. Everyday, on this day, down the ages we will recall the several other heroes of democracy such as Kudirat Abiola, wife of Chief Abiola, who was brutally murdered while in the trenches fighting on the side of the people. We remember Pa Alfred Rewane, one of the heroes of our independence struggle and Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua (rtd) who were silenced by the military junta while in pursuit of democracy. They gave their yesterday for the liberty that is ours today.

9. The point is that we must never take this democracy for granted. We must forever jealously guard and protect it like a precious jewel. For, a people can never truly appreciate the freedoms and rights democracy guarantees them until they lose it.

10. We have traversed the dark, thorny path of dictatorship before and those who experienced it can readily testify to the unbridgeable gap between the dignity of freedom and the humiliation and degradation of tyranny. True, rancorous debates, interminable wrangling, ceaseless quarrels, bitter electoral contestations may be perceived by some as unattractive features of democracy. But they also testify to its merit and value.

11. This year, we held the seventh in the cycle of elections that have become sacred rituals of our democratic practice in this dispensation since 1999.

12. That the polls were intensely contested is in itself positive evidence that democracy is well and alive in our land. It is only natural that even as those who won and experienced victory in the various elections are elated and fulfilled, those who lost are disenchanted and disappointed. But the beauty of democracy is that those who win today can lose tomorrow and those who lose today will have an opportunity to compete and win in the next round of elections.

13. Those who cannot endure and accept the pain of defeat in elections do not deserve the joy of victory when it is their turn to triumph. Above all, those who disagree with the outcome of the elections are taking full advantage of the constitutional provisions to seek redress in court and that is one of the reasons why democracy is still the best form of government invented by man.

14. For Chief MKO Abiola, the symbol of this day, in whose memory June 12 became a national holiday, democracy is eternal.

15. It is about rule of law and vibrant judiciary that can be trusted to deliver justice and strengthen institutions. It has become imperative to state here that the unnecessary illegal orders used to truncate or abridge democracy will no longer be tolerated.

16. The recent harmonization of the retirement age for judicial officers is meant to strengthen the rule of law, which is a critical pillar of democracy. The reform has just started.

17. The democracy that will yield the right dividends to the people who are the shareholders means more than just freedom of choice and the right to get people into elective offices. It means social and economic justice for our people. To the winner of June 12, democracy offers the best chance to fight and eliminate poverty. Thirty years ago, he christened his campaign manifesto, ‘Farewell to Poverty’ because he was convinced that there is nothing divine about poverty. It is a man-made problem that can be eliminated with clearly thought out social and economic policies.

18. It is for this reason that, in my inauguration address on May 29, I gave effect to the decision taken by my predecessor-in-office to remove the fuel subsidy albatross and free up for collective use the much-needed resources, which had hitherto been pocketed by a few rich. I admit that the decision will impose an extra burden on the masses of our people. I feel your pain. This is one decision we must bear to save our country from going under and take our resources away from the stranglehold of a few unpatriotic elements.

19. Painfully, I have asked you, my compatriots, to sacrifice a little more for the survival of our country. For your trust and belief in us, I assure you that your sacrifice shall not be in vain. The government I lead will repay you through massive investment in transportation infrastructure, education, regular power supply, healthcare and other public utilities that will improve the quality of lives.

20. The democracy MKO Abiola died for is one that promotes the welfare of the people over personal interests of the ruling class and one where the governed can find personal fulfillment and happiness. That is the hope MKO Abiola ignited throughout our country in 1993.

21. On this year’s Democracy Day, I enjoin us all to rededicate ourselves to strengthening this form of government of free peoples that has been our guiding light these past 24 years. In particular, those of us who have been privileged to be elected into public offices at various levels in both the executive and legislative arms of government must recommit ourselves to offering selfless service to the people, and delivering concrete democracy dividends in accordance with our electoral promises.

22. On my part and that of my administration, I pledge anew our commitment to diligently fulfilling every component of our electoral pact with the people – the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda.

23. We shall be faithful to truth. Faithful to equity. And faithful to justice. We shall exercise our authority and mandate to govern with fairness, respect for the rule of law, and commitment to always uphold the dignity of all our people.

24. On this note, I wish us all a happy Democracy Day celebration and pray that the light of liberty shall never be extinguished in our land.

25. Thank you all and may God continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

10th NASS Leadership: Southwest Frontiers Cautions Tinubu Against Early Confrontation With North

0

The South-West Frontiers has expressed worry over the concerns that a section of those who call themselves supporters of the President Bola Tinubu is scheming the illegal arrest of some prominent aspirants for the House of Representatives Speaker and the Senate Presidency such as the former Zamfara Governor, Abdulaziz Yari who is seeking the Senate President position.

A strong-worded statement signed by the Frontiers chairman, Kolawale Adediji Kazeem described the move as provocative, unwarranted and unsolicited attempt to shade the Tinubu Presidency in bad light and cause rifts between the Northern political allies of the South-West.

“We observe the deliberate attempt by some desperate politicians to drag the President into their self-serving battle by making it appear like his own war, which in reality, is not.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the South-West would not tolerate any move for the sake of some few people’s ego, that would drag the South-West presidency into collision with any of its friends, especially the North.

“We therefore warn all those who see it as their duty to cause rifts between our president, a universally renown cosmopolitan democrat into the dirty mud of their dubious agenda to desist as we are amply ready to protect our president at any cost.

“To our dear president, we restate confidence in his ability and capacity to cope with whichever leadership the legislature presents for the good of the country.

“We therefore call on him to beware of bad company around him and to resist any temptation to get him to act outside the constitution and undemocratic.

“While calling on the President to allow due process of democracy to take its course in the emergence of the leadership of the National Assembly, we urge all aspirants not to give in to intimidation or blackmail.”

As Tinubu Inaugurates Akume as 21st SGF

0

By Maiwada Dammallam

The news of the appointment of the former governor of Benue state, three terms Senator and the immediate past Minister of special duties as the new Secretary to  government of the Federation came as a big surprise to many albeit a surprise as delightful as an unexpected Christmas present. The appointment was a masterly performance by President Tinubu, a political tactician whose adroitness always stands him out as a politician and an administrator. Beside being a round peg in a round hole, SGF Akume is a ready answer to the age long question of balancing the ethno-religious and regional hegemony of Nigeria, perhaps, the most delicate aspect of the schedule of a Nigerian president.

Zeroing on George Akume for the coveted office of the SGF among many eminent Nigerians was a systematic and a courageous departure from the past beside being a pragmatic first step towards the development of Nigeria. This is not unexpected considering President Tinubu’s commitment to excellence and penchant for authoring lasting legacies. Akume’s appointment is quite confirmatory of Tinubu’s avowed subscription to good governance and quality representation. A popular grassroots politician, a former two terms Governor, three terms senator and a former. With a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a master’s degree in Labour Relations, Tinubu couldn’t settle for a better choice than Akume for the office of the SGF which is more or less the engine room of the government.

As a politician, SGF Akume’s name is engraved in the APC hall of fame for his laudable contributions to the growth of the party, right from its formative years to now that it has taken over as the ruling party in Nigeria. His influence went far beyond the borders of Benue State where even without his party, the APC, in power, he kept PDP on its toes and with bloodied nose all through the tragic administration of former Governor Samuel Ortom (PDP). Not even the added advantage of having Iyochia Ayu, the erstwhile despotic PDP National Chairman, could slow down the intimidating influence of SGF Akume in Benue State and the middle belt region in general. But for his resilience and perseverance, APC might’ve died a slow asphyxiating death in the in the middle belt as envisaged by Ortom and Ayu. He persevered and kept the APC house not only alive but kicking. While it lasted, he was some sort of a watering hole for members of the APC in Benue and neighboring states.

This may explain why Akume’s nomination is being celebrated across party lines in the region; a clear indication that the entire region is pleased with, expectedly, Benue State being the epicenter. For close to 2 decades Akume has been the rallying point of Benue politics with tentacles reaching the remotest enclaves of the state; touching live and making a difference. It’s not accidental that he was the first Governor to have completed two terms in office in Benue State, the state’s diversity, political complexity, intimidating opposition warlords and all. It’s with a dint of hard work, resilience, perseverance and genuine commitment to the people.

President Tinubu deserve accolades for walking his talk. When campaigning he promised to bring on board people with the experience, panache, commitment, intelligence, versatility and ability to deliver given assignments for the over all benefits of the people without compromising the best interest of Nigeria. This cap fitted Akume like a glove. Remaining a recurring decimal in the middle belt politics for decades; negotiating safely through political land mines and booby traps is a testament of Akume’s dexterity and cosmopolitanism.

Of course, good leaders don’t just fall from the sky. They are self-made; molded by self-imposed disciplinary rules and regulations. And it takes one to identify one. President Tinubu and SGF Akume could be said to be a match made in heaven. It’s a choice made on the basis of track record, trust and familiarity. President Tinubu’s obsession and or even addiction to quality service delivery must have influenced his decision to pick Sen. Akume as his SGF and no doubt there couldn’t be a better choice that could fit President Tinubu’s aspiration to rejuvenate, equip and fast track Nigeria’s journey to nationhood.

SGF Akume is not one to learn on the job having successfully ruled Benue State, a miniature Nigeria, for two terms without hitches and with a very enviable record to show for it. A 3-term stint in the upper chamber of the National Assembly and a 4-year ministerial term must have equipped him with the versatility needed for the job of an SGF. His appointment is indicative of President Tinubu’s dedication to all Nigerians, regardless of their religious, regional or ethnic backgrounds. It reinforces his steadfastness in his pledge to unite Nigeria and ensure equal quality representation. President Tinubu deserve commendation for maintaining his trademark commitment to meritocracy. It’s a deviation from the primordial tendencies that kept Nigeria moving in a hopeless circle of retardation.

Now that President Tinubu is done with perhaps the trickiest appointment; that of the SGF, and both he and SGF Akume look set to hit the ground running, I think Nigerians should put behind inimical tendencies of exploiting religious and regional fault lines to resolve political setbacks to have enough time and energy to probe governance and ensure quality service delivery. SGF Akume is already appointed and it’s very obvious he’s here to stay. Then, it’s going to be more beneficial for all and sundry to rally behind and support the new SGF to give his best shot ever for Nigeria. As it was before, so it is today; Nigeria is for us to make of mar. Certainly we could make Nigeria by intelligent and patriotic choices or mar it by silly egocentric choices.

The newly sworn-in Tinubu administration inherited myriad of problems mostly leftovers from the days of the PDP which the immediate past administration couldn’t resolve satisfactorily President Tinubu is leaving no one in doubt about his determination to make Nigeria a better place than he met it. His pragmatic approach to biting issues like the swift decision of fuel subsidy removal is indicative of his excellent grasp of the Nigerian situation. We owe it to Nigeria to support him and his carefully handpicked appointees.
