BREAKING: 2027: Ex-President Jonathan officially emerges as PDP presidential candidate in absentia

0

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has officially emerged as the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party faction led by Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde and its national chairman Taminu Turaki.

At the faction’s National Convention held in Area 10, Garki, Abuja, former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, received the PDP Certificate of Return on Jonathan’s behalf before party leaders, delegates, former ministers, state officials, and supporters.

Despite his emergence as the faction’s presidential candidate, Jonathan was absent from the affirmation ceremony and has not publicly declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.

This comes just after the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike backed PDP had dismissed claims of announcing the former president as its presidential candidate.

Earlier, through the Federal Capital Territory Administration, Wike had warned hotels and event centres against granting approval to unregistered organisations.

How NDC FCT senatorial primary was rigged in closed room—Aisha Yusuf

0

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial aspirant on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Aisha, has alleged that the party’s primary election was manipulated by some leaders, leading to her withdrawal from the contest.

Aisha, an activist-turned-politician, claimed that the exercise lacked transparency and failed to comply with the party’s guidelines and electoral regulations.

In a statement detailing her grievances, she alleged that the primary election was conducted behind closed doors with a predetermined outcome disguised as a legitimate process.

According to her, the exercise suffered multiple postponements, while the venue was changed at the last minute, creating uncertainty among participants.

She further claimed that the party deviated from its approved guidelines by replacing the planned direct primary system with a delegate-based process conducted at a central location rather than at local government headquarters.

“The guidelines of the party were not followed. A delegate-based process was introduced to be conducted at a central location instead of the direct primaries to be conducted at local government headquarters,” she said.

Aisha also alleged that the final decision on the contest was not made openly by delegates as expected.

“When the moment came, the contest was not decided by delegates in the open; it was affirmed in a closed room, away from the people whose voices it was supposed to reflect,” she stated.

She maintained that despite any official declarations by the party regarding the credibility of the exercise, the events that transpired did not reflect fairness or justice.

“The party will indeed go on to release statements upon statements about the free and fair nature of the Abuja FCT primaries. They are entitled to their voice, but the facts that transpired, when litigated by conscience and the guidelines of the Electoral Act, do not reflect justice and fairness,” Aisha added.

The NDC has yet to officially respond to the allegations.

Champions League Final: I wish them luck- Ex-Nigerian star Disu predicts result for PSG vs Arsenal

0

Former Nigeria international Taju Disu has tipped Arsenal to defeat Paris Saint-Germain in Saturday’s UEFA Champions League final in Budapest.

The highly anticipated clash will see the champions of England and France battle for Europe’s biggest club prize.

PSG head into the encounter as defending champions after their emphatic 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in last year’s final, while Arsenal are chasing their first-ever Champions League title.

Speaking to Footy-Africa, Disu expressed confidence that the Gunners could finally end their long wait for European glory.

“I hope Arsenal will win it this time because they have been in the final before and lost. It’s been a long time coming,” Disu said.

The former international, however, acknowledged the challenge posed by the French giants, describing PSG as a formidable side.

“I wish them the very best of luck. It’s not going to be an easy match because PSG are a great side and defending champions, but if Arsenal can get their tactics right, they can win,” he added.

Naira to Dollar exchange rate today, May 29, 2026: Nigerian currency appreciates significantly after Sallah holidays

0

The Nigerian naira recorded a marginal appreciation against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market following the Eid-ul-Adha holidays.

Data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the naira strengthened to N1,373.25 per dollar on Friday, compared to N1,375.41 exchanged on Tuesday before the holiday break.

The latest development indicates that the local currency gained N2.16 against the dollar at the official market during the period under review.

However, activity at the parallel market remained unchanged, with the naira trading at N1,395 per dollar on Friday, the same rate recorded before the holidays.

The differing performances across the official and parallel markets come as Nigeria’s external reserves stood at $49.34 billion as of May 26, 2026, according to available data.

The improvement in the official exchange rate marks a reversal from the trend recorded before the Eid-ul-Adha celebrations, when the naira weakened against the dollar at the official foreign exchange window.

Ene-Nwannaji secured victory at the party’s governorship primary election conducted on Friday, defeating other contenders, including Chief Chinyeaka Ohaa and Senator Gilbert Nnaji.

Announcing the results, the NDC Secretary in Enugu State, Dr. Sebastine Okafor, said the exercise was held across the 17 local government areas of the state in accordance with directives from the party’s national leadership.

Okafor disclosed that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, monitored the primary election.

Ani stated that the conduct of the primary election complied with the party’s guidelines and the Electoral Act 2026.

He said the successful exercise demonstrated the party’s preparedness for the 2027 general elections and urged unsuccessful aspirants to support the party ahead of the governorship poll scheduled for January 2027.

Jonathan: Wike sends warning to hotels ahead of PDP declaration

Wike Minister of FCT

The minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has sent a serious warning to hotels and event centers in Abuja ahead of the People’s Democratic Party’s faction under Kabiru Turaki’s leadership declaration of former President Goodluck Jonathan as the consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

In a statement by the Federal Capital Territory Administration, the FCTA has sounded a note of warning to owners of event centers, hotels, and other public buildings in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, to stop offering their facilities for use by illegal organizations.

The FCTA noted that allocations of lands in the FCT are strictly to carry out lawful activities, adding that “going forward, title documents of any event center, hotel, or public building that is used for the gathering of illegal organizations will be revoked.”

This was contained in a statement on Friday by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

“In view of the need to further ensure the security of lives and properties in the FCT and sustain the efforts of security agencies in this regard, usage of event centers, hotels, and other public buildings will now be closely monitored.

“This is aimed at ensuring that they are not used by illegal organizations for gatherings capable of disrupting the peace of the nation’s capital.

“Owners of these facilities are therefore urged to take cognizance of the legality of organizations seeking to use their facilities and the purpose before letting them out.

“For instance, in this political season, owners of event centers and hotels in particular must ensure that they only deal with independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)-recognized leadership of political parties in respect of the use of their facilities, and proper records of transactions must be kept.

“Failure to comply with this directive will result in revocation of the title documents of such properties.”

Recall that the Turaki-led faction of the PDP announced a plan to declare Jonathan its consensus candidate for the 2027 presidential election on Saturday, 30th May 2026.

Atiku reveals most damning indictment of Tinubu’s three years in office

0

Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria and 2027 Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s three years in office have been marred by hunger and tears by Nigerians.

He disclosed this in a statement by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu.

According to him, the last three years under President Bola have been riddled with propaganda, complacency, and deception.

Atiku noted in the period under review Nigerians have continued to languish in tears, the despair of unemployed youths, the collapse of businesses, and the haunting images of schoolchildren being abducted by criminals.

“The facts are stubborn and unforgiving. Three years ago, President Tinubu promised renewed hope. What Nigerians have received instead is renewed hardship, renewed insecurity, renewed poverty, and renewed hopelessness.

“Today, millions of Nigerians can no longer afford the basic necessities of life. Food prices have skyrocketed beyond the reach of ordinary families. Inflation has become a cruel tax on the poor. Small and medium-scale businesses are shutting their doors. Investors are fleeing uncertainty. The naira has been battered. Purchasing power has collapsed.

“Never in recent history have so many Nigerians worked so hard only to become poorer. Never has a government celebrated itself so loudly while its citizens suffered so deeply”, he stated.

Atiku further said that the most damning indictment of the Tinubu administration’s three-year record is the resurgence of mass abductions and the growing sense that the Nigerian state is steadily losing its monopoly over security.

“While government officials celebrate themselves and distribute scorecards, terrorists and criminal gangs are distributing fear across the country.

“The recent abduction of schoolchildren in Borno State and the mass kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State are not isolated incidents. They are the most accurate report card of this administration after three years in office.

“What greater evidence of failure can there be than parents sending their children to school only to receive news that they have been abducted? What greater symbol of governmental failure exists than classrooms becoming hunting grounds for criminals?

“Three years into this administration, Nigerian children are still being dragged into forests by terrorists and kidnappers. Three years into this administration, communities remain vulnerable. Three years into this administration, citizens continue to pay the price for a government that appears more concerned with managing headlines than securing lives.

“The tragedy of Borno and Oyo is not merely a security failure. It is the inevitable consequence of a government that has become detached from reality and addicted to propaganda.

“When governments become consumed by self-praise, they stop listening. When they stop listening, they stop learning. And when they stop learning, they begin to fail.”

Atiku said the Tinubu administration has spent three years asking Nigerians to ignore their lived experiences and instead believe carefully curated narratives from government spokespersons.

“They tell Nigerians the economy is improving, yet families skip meals. They tell Nigerians insecurity is declining, yet communities live in fear. They tell Nigerians prosperity is around the corner, yet businesses continue to collapse under unbearable pressure.

“No amount of propaganda can fill an empty stomach. No amount of spin can erase insecurity. No amount of government advertising can hide the suffering that millions experience every day.

“The true measure of governance is not what government says about itself. It is what citizens experience in their daily lives.”

The former vice president warned that history is filled with governments that mistook the patience of the people for permanent acceptance.

“There is a difference between patience and satisfaction. There is a difference between endurance and approval.

“Nigerians have endured extraordinary hardship because they are resilient people. But resilience should never be mistaken for weakness. Patience should never be mistaken for surrender.

“The signs are everywhere. Across the country, Nigerians are asking hard questions. They are demanding accountability. They are refusing to be distracted by slogans and political theater.

“They understand that a government that cannot guarantee security, create opportunities, stabilize the economy, or protect the dignity of its citizens has no moral basis for asking to be rewarded with another term.”

Atiku stressed that democracy provides Nigerians with a peaceful and constitutional instrument for change.

“The ballot box remains the most powerful weapon in the hands of the people. It is stronger than propaganda. It is stronger than intimidation. It is stronger than incumbency,” added.

La Liga: Atletico reacts to Barcelona’s €100m bid for Julian Alvarez

0

Spanish giants Barcelona have submitted an official €100 million bid to Atlético Madrid for Argentine forward Julian Alvarez.

The offer was reportedly made as a straight cash proposal without add-ons or player exchange.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano disclosed that Atlético Madrid were displeased with both the timing and structure of the approach made by Barcelona in the last 24 hours.

Despite Atletico’s negative reaction, discussions between both clubs are still ongoing, with no final agreement reached yet.

Romano wrote on X, “Barcelona sent the first official proposal to Atlético Madrid for Julián Álvarez worth €100m. No add-ons, no players involved. Atlético is not happy about the situation over the last 24 hours—but Julián has already asked to leave.”

The report has further intensified speculation surrounding Alvarez’s future ahead of the summer transfer window.

‘Bring back our children now’ – Protest breaks out in Ibadan over Oyo kidnapping [VIDEO]

0

Members of the National Union of Teachers, or NUT, in Oyo State on Friday staged a peaceful protest in Ibadan over the abduction of students and teachers from schools in the Oriire Local Government Area.

The protesters took to major streets in the Oyo State capital nearly three weeks after gunmen invaded the Esiele community in Oriire on May 15 and abducted more than 40 students and teachers.

Reports said the kidnappers have continued to release disturbing videos showing the victims being punished while in captivity.

Primary and secondary school teachers from different parts of the state converged on Iwo Road, chanting solidarity songs and calling on the government and security agencies to intensify efforts toward securing the release of their colleagues and the schoolchildren.

The demonstrators carried placards with different inscriptions, including “Bring Back Our Children” and “No More Bandits,” as they demanded urgent intervention from relevant authorities.

The protest caused temporary disruption to vehicular movement around the Iwo Road axis as the teachers marched peacefully through the area.

The union urged the government to strengthen security around schools and ensure safety.
