Again, US-Nigeria deadly airstrike kills 21 suspected ISWAP fighters in Borno

0

A joint air operation conducted by the Nigerian military under Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) and the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has reportedly eliminated 21 suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Borno State.

The airstrike targeted a suspected terrorist stronghold in Arege, Kukawa Local Government Area, on May 30, following intelligence indicating insurgent activity in the area.

Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, citing military sources, disclosed that the operation was launched after intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions confirmed the presence of ISWAP members at the location.

According to the sources, the targeted camp was allegedly being used by the group to plan and coordinate attacks across the Lake Chad region.

The strike reportedly resulted in the death of 21 suspected insurgents and disrupted the group’s operations in the area.

Military officials said the mission was part of ongoing security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States aimed at dismantling terrorist networks, destroying insurgent hideouts, and reducing the operational capacity of insurgent groups in the Northeast.

The sources described the operation as intelligence-led and carefully executed to achieve maximum impact against the targeted militants.

They added that the successful mission underscores the growing collaboration between Nigerian security forces and international partners in the fight against terrorism.

The officials also expressed confidence that the operation would further weaken insurgent activities around the Lake Chad Basin, where terrorist groups have continued efforts to regroup and launch attacks on vulnerable communities.

Transfer: Blown out of proportion— Osimhen finally speaks on Chelle’s comments about leaving Galatasaray

0

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has called on the public to ignore speculation about his future after comments by Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle sparked fresh transfer rumors.

Chelle had suggested that Osimhen could be close to securing a move away from the Turkish champions this summer while explaining the striker’s absence from Nigeria’s upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal.

According to the Malian coach, Osimhen opted out of the squad to focus on a possible transfer.

“We miss two players because Victor Osimhen may be about to change clubs,” Chelle said.

The remarks quickly fuelled speculation over the forward’s next destination. However, Osimhen has now moved to clarify the situation, revealing that he spoke directly with Chelle following the interview.

In a statement shared on his Instagram Story, the Nigerian international said the coach’s comments had been misunderstood and taken out of context.

“I just got off the phone with Coach Eric Chelle regarding the comments about me in his recent interview,” Osimhen wrote.

“Unfortunately, his words have been taken out of context and blown out of proportion. He has great respect for Galatasaray, follows most of our games, and never intended to create any controversy.

“I appreciate the conversation, the opportunity to always represent my country, and I look forward to continuing to work with him. He is a great coach whom I respect a lot, and I kindly ask everyone to disregard the speculation surrounding this matter.”

Osimhen’s response appears aimed at calming growing rumors linking him with a move away from Galatasaray ahead of the summer transfer window.

2027: We’ll fix Nigeria’s electricity problem in four years — NDC Presidential candidate, Peter Obi

0

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to increase Nigeria’s electricity generation and distribution capacity to 10,000 megawatts within four years if elected president.

Obi made the commitment on Saturday shortly after emerging as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking after his declaration, the former Anambra State governor said his administration would focus on delivering practical solutions rather than offering excuses for poor performance.

“This is something we have carefully studied. Give us four years and we will fix Nigeria’s electricity issue,” Obi said.

He lamented the country’s current power situation, describing it as unacceptable for a nation with a population exceeding 200 million people.

“It is completely unacceptable that a country of over 200 million people generates and distributes only about 4,000 megawatts of electricity while millions of Nigerians still lack access to reliable power,” he stated.

Obi compared Nigeria’s electricity output with that of other African countries, noting that South Africa and Egypt generate significantly more power despite having smaller populations.

“Countries like South Africa and Egypt, despite having significantly smaller populations, each generate and distribute over 40,000 megawatts.

“Nigeria is not even producing one-tenth of what those countries generate, and that must change,” he added.

The NDC candidate maintained that improving electricity supply would be a key priority of his administration, arguing that stable power is essential for economic growth, industrial development, and job creation.

Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had promised to fix Nigeria’s electricity challenges in four years during his campaign for the presidency around 2023; however, that has not been the case three years into his administration.

‘God punish your generation’ — Davido blasts critic over comment on Nigeria

0

Nigerian music star Davido has engaged in a heated exchange on social media after urging entertainers to speak out against injustice and the challenges facing the country.

The singer, whose real name is David Adeleke, shared a post on his official page expressing concern over the state of the nation and admitting that celebrities, including himself, have not done enough to address issues affecting Nigerians.

“I can’t lie, we entertainers… we mess up, including me. We need to speak up. There is too much injustice going on. Our country has gone downhill,” Davido wrote.

His comments sparked mixed reactions online, with one social media user, identified as Princess Luna, questioning the sincerity of his remarks.

In a strongly worded response, the user accused the singer of being disingenuous and dismissed his comments as performative.

Davido, however, rejected the accusation, insisting that he is not affiliated with any political group and has consistently voiced concerns about governance issues.

“I am not part of any City Boy group. When I criticized the government on American media platforms, many of you insulted me for it,” he replied.

The award-winning singer further stated that his friendship with a political figure does not stop him from expressing concerns directly when necessary.

“I have been friends with ST for years, and that is where it ends. I call and complain to him all the time, even in person,” Davido added.

The exchange has since generated widespread reactions on social media, with users divided over the singer’s comments and his role in speaking out on national issues.

Chelsea has mocked Arsenal on social media following the Gunners’ defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday night.

Arsenal initially took the lead through Kai Havertz, but PSG restored parity in the second half when Ousmane Dembele converted from the penalty spot.

With the score tied at 1-1 after extra time, the final was decided by a penalty shootout.

Arsenal’s Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhães both failed to convert their spot-kicks, allowing PSG to emerge victorious and become the first club to successfully defend the Champions League title under the competition’s new format.

Shortly after the final whistle, Chelsea appeared to take a swipe at their London rivals by promoting tours of Stamford Bridge on their social media platforms.

The post read: “Come and visit London’s Home of Trophies.”

Chelsea accompanied the message with two star emojis, symbolizing their two Champions League triumphs, alongside an image of the prestigious European trophy.

The post quickly attracted reactions from football fans, with many interpreting it as a direct jab at Arsenal following their heartbreaking defeat in the final.

British broadcaster Piers Morgan has expressed support for Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães following his missed penalty in the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday.

Arsenal were beaten by PSG in a penalty shoot-out after both sides played out a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time.

Gabriel and Eberechi Eze failed to convert their spot-kicks as the French champions secured the European title.

Reacting to the result, Morgan took to X to praise the Brazilian defender for his contributions throughout the season despite the costly miss.

“Nobody less deserving of that than Gabriel. He’s been an absolute hero all season. I love you, Gabriel,” Morgan wrote.

Gabriel was one of Arsenal’s standout performers during the campaign and played a key role in the club’s run to the Champions League final.

The defender will now turn his attention to international duty after being named in Brazil’s squad for the FIFA World Cup, which begins in June.

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has emerged as the party’s flag bearer after securing a resounding victory in the party’s nationwide primary election.

Obi polled more than 45 million votes in the exercise conducted across the country, defeating other contenders to clinch the party’s presidential ticket.

According to the results collated from the six geopolitical zones, Obi recorded strong support across all regions.

In the South-West, he garnered 6.75 million votes, while the North-West delivered 7 million votes in his favor.

The former Anambra State governor secured 4.45 million votes in the North-East and 5 million votes in the North-Central region.

The outcome of the primary election cements Obi’s position as the NDC’s presidential candidate ahead of the next general election.

Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu secured the All Progressives Congress presidential ticket with over 10.9 million votes.

This means that the incumbent president, Tinubu, would slug it out with Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress, and former president Goodluck Jonathan of the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the People’s Democratic Party.
