0

Residents of parts of Ibeju-Lekki in Lagos State were thrown into panic after reports emerged of the presence of a group of men suspected to be Fulani herders and bandits in the area.

Videos circulating on social media showed residents confronting and questioning some of the men, who were allegedly seen moving around the community under suspicious circumstances.

According to claims made by residents in one of the videos, some of the men were found carrying bags allegedly containing large sums of money, a dagger, and a bullet belt.

The residents further alleged that the men were bandits who had come to collect ransom payments.

In another incident captured on video, residents gathered around the suspects at Baba Adisa Bus Stop in Ibeju-Lekki.

Some residents claimed that the suspects were eventually apprehended by police officers.

Reacting to the development, Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr. P, expressed concern after witnessing a similar scene in the Lekki area.

Sharing his reaction on social media, he wrote:

“Omo! Just coming back from a video shoot around Lekki and saw a crowd gathered. Nah, there I hear they caught a suspected bandit. Omo, they’ve entered Lagos o!”

However, both the State Police Command and Lagos Government Authorities have dismissed the claims as false.

0

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has named himself and teammate Michael Olise among the leading candidates to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or award.

The England captain also identified players from reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain as strong contenders for the prestigious individual prize following the club’s successful defense of the UEFA Champions League title.

Kane expressed confidence that an English player could emerge as the winner if England triumph at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

“I’m definitely among the favorites for the Ballon d’Or,” Kane said.

“If England win the World Cup, surely you can see an English player winning it.

“When you look at the favorites, you have myself, Olise, and the players in the Champions League final.

“I saw that the ceremony was in London, and maybe that’s a good omen for me. Winning it in my hometown would make it even more special.”

The 32-year-old enjoyed another prolific campaign with Bayern Munich and believes both his club performances and England’s World Cup prospects could strengthen his chances of claiming football’s most coveted individual honor.

US-based journalist Okey Ndibe neither arrested nor detained—Nigeria’s DSS finally opens up

0

The Department of State Services (DSS) has dismissed reports alleging that renowned Nigerian author and academic, Prof. Okey Ndibe, was arrested or detained at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on June 1, 2026.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the agency clarified that Ndibe was only subjected to a routine review process connected to a longstanding Watch-List Action (WLA) and was neither arrested nor detained at any point.

The statement, signed by the DSS Deputy Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Favour Dozie, explained that the current Director-General of the Service had ordered a comprehensive review of old watchlist records, some of which date back to the military era, to prevent citizens from being unnecessarily inconvenienced.

According to the agency, individuals previously placed on watchlists are routinely engaged during transit as part of an assessment process that could lead to the downgrading or eventual removal of their names from the list.

The DSS noted that the exercise is designed to ensure that those affected are no longer involved in activities linked to the reasons for their original watchlisting, while also aligning the process with international best practices.

The Service added that several Nigerians, including journalists, have benefited from the review initiative. It cited the case of Lanre Arogundade, executive director of the International Press Centre (IPC), whose name was removed from the watchlist in May 2025 after more than a decade.

Providing details on Ndibe’s case, the DSS disclosed that the academic had been on its watchlist since January 29, 2013. However, following a review, his status has now been downgraded, with the airport interaction serving as part of the final process toward delisting him.

The agency stated that Ndibe spent less than an hour with officials before being cleared and escorted, stressing that the engagement was conducted professionally and courteously.

The DSS also pointed to Ndibe’s own Facebook post, where he reportedly acknowledged the respectful conduct of operatives during the encounter.

Reaffirming its commitment to fairness and the rule of law, the service said it would continue reviewing old Watch-List Actions to ensure that affected Nigerians are treated in accordance with legal provisions.

The agency further encouraged individuals who believe they may still be affected by existing watchlist actions to formally contact its headquarters to facilitate the review process while assuring that the ongoing cleanup of the watchlist system would continue regardless of formal requests.

Naira to dollar exchange rate Today, June 1, 2026: Nigerian currency records significant appreciation

0

The Nigerian naira recorded a notable appreciation against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Monday, beginning the new week and the month of June 2026 on a positive note.

Data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, showed that the naira strengthened to N1,366.79 per dollar on Monday, compared to N1,373.26 per dollar recorded at the close of trading on Friday.

The latest development indicates that the local currency gained N6.47 against the greenback at the official market.

Meanwhile, activity at the parallel market remained unchanged. A Bureau de Change operator, Abubakar Bengazzi, told DAILY POST that the naira traded at N1,395 per dollar on Monday, maintaining the same exchange rate recorded at the close of business on Friday.

As a result, the gap between the official and parallel market exchange rates narrowed to N28.21 per dollar.

The appreciation comes amid sustained stability in Nigeria’s external reserves, which stood at $49.58 billion as of May 29, 2026, according to data from the apex bank.

The latest gain extends the naira’s positive performance from last week, when the currency also closed stronger against the dollar at the official foreign exchange market.

2027: It’s Fulani celebrating Atiku’s emergence in ADC, reason I call him “Kachalla”—Babachir Lawal

0

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has defended his decision to describe former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as “Kachalla,” insisting that the title is commonly used in some Fulani communities to address local leaders.

Lawal made the clarification on Monday during an appearance on Politics Today, a program on Channels Television, shortly after announcing his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

According to him, the title is widely used by people living in remote areas and should not be considered unusual for Atiku, whom he described as a Fulani leader.

The former SGF also claimed that some Fulani groups were celebrating Atiku’s emergence as a presidential candidate because they believed it could boost their chances of producing Nigeria’s next president.

Lawal further criticized the former vice president, accusing him of failing to publicly condemn killings, kidnappings, and violent attacks across parts of the country, particularly in northern Nigeria and his home state of Adamawa.

He questioned Atiku’s response to recent attacks that reportedly claimed several lives, alleging that the former vice president had neither spoken out against the incidents nor visited affected communities to sympathize with victims.

Lawal also referenced the killing of Deborah Samuel, claiming that Atiku initially condemned the incident before later distancing himself from the statement.

He argued that anyone seeking Nigeria’s highest office should be willing to publicly denounce violence and insecurity wherever they occur.

Speaking during the interview, Lawal said, “I called him ‘Kachalla’ because that’s the title people like Bello Turji call their local leaders. That’s the title their people in the bush use. Is he not a Fulani?

“Fulanis are celebrating now that their brother has gotten a ticket, isn’t it? And they are beginning to celebrate that they will produce the president.

“Why are they celebrating if they are not intending to use it for you? Have you ever had Atiku condemn any of these kidnappings? Have you ever had him on record condemning all this massive killing?

“Whether it is all this killing — eighteen people killed and maimed. What has Atiku said about it, let alone talked about going there? Not even going to sympathize with the victims.

“Even in Adamawa, they killed seventeen villagers recently. Has he ever condemned it? Because the victims are not his people, has he ever condemned it for God’s sake?

“Go and ask him; when they did that thing to Deborah in Sokoto and he made a press statement condemning it, he had to retract it and started saying that it was his aide who issued it without his authority.

“He wants to be the president, and he cannot condemn the genocide that is going on right before his own land in his state.”

$1.1bn debt: Supreme Court voids asset freeze on Nestoil as FBNQuest loses

0

The Supreme Court has overturned a Court of Appeal order that froze the assets of Nestoil Limited, Neconde Energy Limited, and two other firms over an alleged $1.1 billion debt owed to FBNQuest Merchant Bank Limited and First Trustees Limited.

In a unanimous judgment delivered on Monday, a five-member panel of the apex court held that the Court of Appeal exceeded its powers by granting an ex parte application against the affected companies.

Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Stephen Jonah Adah faulted the appellate court for assuming jurisdiction and issuing injunctive orders against Neconde and Nestoil when the matter was not properly before it.

The Supreme Court also criticized the Court of Appeal for what it described as a misuse of judicial process, particularly for granting a stay of proceedings in an ongoing case before the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The dispute arose from debt recovery proceedings initiated by a consortium of lenders, including FBNQuest Merchant Bank Limited and First Trustees Limited, against Nestoil and Neconde Energy over financing arrangements linked to oil assets and operations.

In October 2025, the Federal High Court in Lagos granted an ex parte Mareva injunction, freezing the companies’ assets, bank accounts, and shares held across more than 20 financial institutions.

However, the companies challenged the order, arguing that it had automatically expired after 14 days in line with the Federal High Court Civil Procedure Rules once they filed a motion seeking its discharge.

On November 20, 2025, Justice Daniel Osiagor ruled that the ex parte order had lapsed by operation of law and was no longer in force.

Despite that ruling, Justice Yargata Nimpar of the Court of Appeal, on November 29, granted an interim restorative injunction that returned control of Nestoil’s assets and operations to a receiver-manager appointed by the banks.

The appellate court further nullified all actions taken by Nestoil after the November 20 ruling and held that the Mareva injunction remained effective.

However, the Supreme Court has now set aside that decision, effectively restoring full control of the companies to Nestoil and Neconde while allowing the substantive dispute to proceed before the trial

2027: Tension in Kano as Residents Burn Obi-Kwankwaso Campaign Posters [VIDEO]

0

Tension erupted in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State on Monday as some residents reportedly set ablaze campaign posters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

A video circulating online and seen by DAILY POST showed a group of youths burning posters bearing the images of Obi and Kwankwaso amid heightened political activities in the area.

The footage also showed the NDC Chairman in the Ungogo Local Government Area, Hon. Bilyaminu Bachirawa, being pulled from a moving motorcycle during the disturbance.

Sources said Bachirawa narrowly escaped being attacked by the aggrieved youths, who were seen chasing the motorcycle while shouting.

The circumstances surrounding the incident could not be independently verified at the time of filing this report.

The development comes barely days after the NDC formally unveiled Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Shortly after securing the party’s ticket, Obi announced Kwankwaso as his running mate, setting the stage for what is expected to be a closely watched presidential contest.

Both Obi and Kwankwaso recently left the African Democratic Congress for the NDC, citing internal disagreements and ongoing legal disputes within the party.

The incumbent of Kano state, Abba Yusuf had joined the ruling All Progressives Congress to seek re-election in 2027.

2027: Tinubu focused on taxes, may soon impose levy on air Nigerians breathe—SDP’s Adebayo

0

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has taken a swipe at President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, describing him as an “intelligent tax collector” whose primary focus is on increasing government revenue through taxation.

Adebayo claimed that the current administration has failed to improve the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians, insisting that only those working within government circles appear to be benefiting from Tinubu’s policies.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, the SDP chieftain alleged that the president’s approach to governance is heavily centered on taxation.

According to him, “President Tinubu is an intelligent tax collector.” He plans to start charging you taxes on everything, even a tax for the oxygen you breathe, really soon.

“If you’re not cautious, then yes, the air we breathe. Just be patient with him; he will get there in his own time.

“The truth is that no one is better off except for those who work in the government.

“I understand that my life isn’t any better, and neither are the lives of my neighbors.”

Adebayo’s remarks come amid growing public debate over recent tax reforms and economic measures introduced by the Tinubu administration as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election begin to gather momentum.

2027: Ex-Nigerian SGF Babachir Lawal quits ADC, blasts Atiku

0

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir LLawal, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing dissatisfaction with the party’s presidential primary process.

Lawal said his decision followed the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the ADC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

According to the former SGF, the outcome of the party’s primary election was allegedly predetermined in ffavorof Atiku. He claimed he could not be part of what he described as a “rigging machine” ahead of the 2027 presidential poll.

Lawal further argued that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would perform better in office than the former vice president. He also ccriticizedAtiku’s suitability for the presidency, describing him as incompetent and alleging that he exhibits tribal and religious bias.

His resignation comes shortly after Atiku secured the ADC presidential ticket.

The development follows the earlier departure of Peter Obi and several other political figures from the ADC to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where Obi is now the party’s presidential candidate.

Nigerian Filling Stations reduce fuel price

0

Some filling stations across Nigeria have begun reducing the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), following the recent decision by the Dangote Refinery to lower its gantry price of petrol by N25 per litre.

A market survey conducted by DAILY POST in Abuja showed that several independent marketers have adjusted their retail prices downward. Sunbeth Energy reduced its petrol price to N1,345 per litre from N1,450, while Emedab lowered its rate to N1,360 per litre from N1,365.

However, prices remained unchanged at several major retail outlets in the Federal Capital Territory. Stations operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Ranoil, AA Rano, NIPCO and MRS continued to sell petrol at between N1,350 and N1,370 per litre as of the time of filing this report.

The latest reduction in pump prices follows Dangote Refinery’s announcement over the weekend of a N25-per-litre cut in its petrol loading price.

Meanwhile, the retail price of Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) has remained largely stable, selling at about N1,900 per litre and above N2,000 per litre at most filling stations.

Speaking on the development, the President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Abubakar Maigandi, said more marketers are expected to reduce their fuel prices from Tuesday as they begin receiving fresh supplies from the Dangote Refinery.

According to him, petrol and diesel prices could decline by between N10 and N15 per litre, depending on location and operational costs.

“As soon as our members receive new stock from Dangote Refinery, fuel and diesel prices would go down in line with the refinery’s latest adjustment,” Maigandi said.
