Amaechi joins Abuja protest demanding electronic transmission of election results

0

Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, on Monday joined protesters in Abuja calling for the real-time electronic transmission of election results.

The protest, tagged “Occupy National Assembly,” saw Nigerian youths converge on the National Assembly complex to express their opposition to the Senate’s rejection of mandatory e-transmission of election results.

The demonstrators insist that electronic transmission is crucial to enhancing transparency and credibility in the electoral process.

Also present at the protest was former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who joined the youths a day earlier in solidarity with their demands.

African club chases Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali

0

Nigeria international goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is reportedly drawing interest from African heavyweights Simba SC of Tanzania and Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca following his departure from South African club Chippa United.

Nwabali became a free agent last week after mutually terminating his contract with the Chilli Boys at his own request, bringing an end to his four-year stay with the club.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper has built a strong reputation as one of the finest goalkeepers on the continent, a status further cemented by his impressive performances for the Super Eagles at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

With his stock on the rise, Nwabali is now expected to decide his next move as top clubs across Africa monitor his situation closely.

US, UK condemn Jimmy Lai’s 20-year jail term as China welcomes Hong Kong Ruling

0

The United States and the United Kingdom have condemned the Hong Kong High Court’s decision to sentence pro-democracy activist and media entrepreneur Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison, a ruling that has been welcomed by China.

Lai, 78, was convicted on Monday after a trial that began in December 2023 and handed the stiffest sentence yet under the Beijing-imposed National Security Law. He was found guilty of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and conspiracy to publish seditious materials.

The founder of the now-defunct pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily was accused of lobbying for sanctions against China and Hong Kong. In their judgment, the judges said Lai harbored resentment toward the People’s Republic of China and described him as the mastermind behind the alleged conspiracies.

Reacting to the verdict, the United States said the sentence represented an unjust and tragic outcome, arguing that it underscores Beijing’s determination to silence advocates of fundamental freedoms in Hong Kong. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said China had abandoned its obligations under the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration.

Rubio urged Hong Kong authorities to grant Lai humanitarian parole, noting that he has already endured more than two years of trial proceedings and over five years in detention.

The United Kingdom also criticized the ruling, describing it as a politically motivated prosecution aimed at suppressing dissent. The British government said Lai, a British citizen, was punished for exercising his right to freedom of expression under a law designed to silence critics of China.

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper raised concerns about Lai’s health, describing the 20-year sentence as effectively a life term, and called on Hong Kong authorities to end what she termed an “appalling ordeal” by releasing him on humanitarian grounds.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reportedly discussed the case with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a recent visit to China, with further diplomatic engagements expected following the sentencing.

China, however, defended the judgment, describing Lai as the principal instigator behind unrest in Hong Kong. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said his actions violated the principles of “One Country, Two Systems,” undermined stability, and harmed the well-being of residents.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said there was every justification to hold Lai accountable, reaffirming Beijing’s support for Hong Kong’s efforts to safeguard national security.

China also warned other countries against interfering in its internal affairs, urging them to respect its sovereignty and Hong Kong’s judicial independence and refrain from what it called irresponsible comments on the case.

Nigerian skitmaker Zicaloma explains how family entitlements delayed his financial growth

0

Popular Nigerian skitmaker Isaac Aloma, better known as Zicsaloma, has opened up about how pressure from family members slowed his journey to financial independence.

The comedian shared the revelation while discussing financial freedom in a recent video, where he stressed the importance of setting firm boundaries with friends and relatives.

According to Zicsaloma, family expectations and a sense of entitlement to his earnings caused several of his early business ventures to fail, despite his intentions to save and secure a better future.

“I did a lot of businesses while growing up, but most of them failed because of family. African families, even your own family, are very entitled to your wealth, even when the purpose of working is to save money and build a better future,” he said.

He advised young people seeking financial stability to prioritize their goals, even if it means being misunderstood.

Zicsaloma added that being financially firm—even with loved ones—is sometimes necessary to break cycles of dependency and achieve long-term success, noting that such decisions may attract criticism but are ultimately beneficial.

Emeka Uzor killing: Nigerians in South Africa to hit streets in protest

0

The Nigerian community in South Africa has threatened to stage a protest following the killing of a Nigerian national, Emeka Uzor, during an anti-drug operation in Gauteng, near Johannesburg.

Uzor was reportedly shot at about 3:00 p.m. on February 8, 2026, at a Caltex petrol station in Windsor East, Randburg.

South African political party ActionSA confirmed the incident in a statement published on its website on Monday, saying the shooting occurred during an anti-drug raid in the area.

“ActionSA can confirm that during an anti-drug operation yesterday, joined by ActionSA’s Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate, Councillor Xolani Khumalo, a shooting incident occurred in which a Nigerian suspect, identified as being involved in drug trafficking, was shot,” the party said.

The group defended its actions, stating that drug syndicates had long terrorized communities through violence and intimidation.

“For too long, drug syndicates have terrorized our communities through violence, intimidation, and a total disregard for the rule of law. ActionSA will continue to support decisive and lawful actions to dismantle this menace,” the statement added.

ActionSA also referenced its 10-point Action Plan for Ekurhuleni, which includes the deployment of specialized units, crime-mapping technology, and strengthened community policing to combat crime.

However, the President of the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA), Mr. Smart Nwobi, dismissed claims that Uzor was a drug dealer, accusing those involved in the operation of acting outside the law.

Speaking on Monday, Nwobi questioned why Uzor was allegedly killed rather than arrested if he was suspected of criminal activity.

“What we are saying is that the victim is not a drug dealer. Do you shoot a drug suspect from a distance, or do you arrest him?” Nwobi asked.

“Anytime a Nigerian is killed, the narrative is quickly pushed that he was a fraudster or a drug dealer so people will not ask questions. We are not going to accept that this time.”

He lamented that similar cases in the past were not properly investigated, which he said had emboldened perpetrators.

“Something like this happened last year, and nothing came out of it. That is why they keep taking advantage of our people,” he said.

Nwobi also alleged that the individual involved in Uzor’s killing had previously been linked to the disappearance of another Nigerian national.

“He is not a police officer but a member of a security outfit. He allegedly electrocuted one of our brothers and removed his body. Till today, we have not found him,” Nwobi claimed.

He disclosed that NUSA had written to Nigeria’s newly posted Consul General in South Africa, warning that protests would be organized if decisive action was not taken.

In a separate statement later on Monday, NUSA said Uzor, who hailed from Nkerefi in the Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, was shot multiple times while seated in his parked vehicle.

The union alleged that he was hit by more than 12 bullets, adding that stray shots damaged nearby vehicles and endangered other civilians.

NUSA also expressed concern that the incident occurred in the presence of a media production crew, including Councillor Khumalo, a former television host and ActionSA’s Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate.

The union condemned comments attributed to Khumalo that appeared to justify the killing, describing them as “careless, irresponsible, and deeply inhumane.”

According to NUSA, the incident bears similarities to the unresolved killing of another Nigerian, Mr. Silas Ani, raising concerns about a pattern of violence against Nigerians in South Africa.

The union called on the South African government, particularly the Minister of Police and the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, to conduct a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into Uzor’s death.

It also demanded accountability for all those involved, stressing that extrajudicial killings have no place in a constitutional democracy.

While urging Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm and law-abiding, Nwobi said the union was engaging relevant authorities to ensure justice is served. NUSA also extended condolences to Uzor’s family.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Mr. Abdulrahman Balogun, said the commission had yet to receive an official report on the incident.

“I only read about it online. We have not been formally notified. Once we receive official communication, appropriate action will be taken,” he said.

Goods worth billions of naira destroyed as fire razes shops in Ibadan market

0

Goods, household items, and other valuables worth millions of naira were destroyed on Monday evening after a fire outbreak gutted several shops at Ogunpa market in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Nigerian Newssphere gathered that the incident occurred at the Iya Maryam Adebara Complex, Rounda area of the market.

Our correspondent learned that no fewer than 10 shops were affected by the inferno, although no life was lost.

The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Hon. Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to Nigerian Newssphere on Tuesday.

According to Akinwande, the fire service successfully brought the situation under control with the support of officers from the Federal Fire Service, while policemen from the Iyaganku Police Headquarters provided security during the operation.

He explained that the fire was caused by the fueling of a running generator by one of the shop occupants.

“Upon arrival, we met about 10 shops engulfed by flames and thick smoke,” Akinwande said. “Our officers swiftly went into action and prevented the fire from spreading to other shops and nearby properties.”

He added that although 10 shops were affected, several other shops and valuable properties worth billions of naira were saved through the timely intervention of firefighters.

Akinwande further disclosed that no casualties were recorded and noted that the officer-in-charge delivered a lecture on fire prevention to shop owners and sympathizers after the operation.

He urged members of the public to promptly alert fire service officials and provide accurate information whenever emergencies occur, while commending the Nigerian police for the adequate security provided during the firefighting exercise.

Full names of 18 Nigerians on US ‘worst-of-the-worst’ deportation list

0

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has added 18 more Nigerians to its deportation register under the “worst-of-the-worst” category, bringing the total number of Nigerians scheduled for removal to 97.

The latest development comes barely a week after U.S. authorities listed 79 Nigerians convicted of various offenses for deportation.

A check of the DHS official website on Monday showed that the new names had been included, indicating a tightening of ongoing immigration enforcement efforts.

According to updated DHS records, most of the offenses associated with the newly listed individuals involve wire fraud, mail fraud, and identity theft.

In a statement released alongside the update, the department said the arrests were part of a nationwide operation targeting criminal immigrants.

“The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is highlighting the worst of the worst criminal aliens arrested by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement,” the statement said.

It added that “under Secretary Noem’s leadership, DHS and ICE personnel are carrying out President Trump’s directive by implementing mass deportations, starting with the most dangerous offenders, including the illegal aliens listed here.”

Among the Nigerians recently added to the list are Oluwaseyanu Akinola Afolabi, Olugbeminiyi Aderibigbe, Benjamin Ifebajo, Obinwanne Okeke, Kolawole Aminu, Oluwadamilola Olufunsho Ojo, and Franklin Ibeabuchi.

Others include Alex Afolabi Ogunshakin, Joshua Ineh, Stephen Oseghale, Eghosa Obaretin, Adesina Surajudeen Lasisi, Ibrahim Ijaoba, Azeez Yinusa, Charles Akabuogu, Kelechi Umeh, Lotenna Chisom Umeadi, Donald Ehie, and Chukwudi Kingsley Kalu.

The updated figures underscore the Trump administration’s continued hardline stance on immigration, with a renewed focus on deporting foreign nationals convicted of serious crimes, including an increasing number of Nigerians.

Electoral act: Without rigging, they are finished—El-Rufai slams Tinubu, Akpabio

0

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has criticized the Senate over its rejection of a provision mandating the electronic transmission of election results, alleging that the decision is intended to allow post-election manipulation.

Speaking on Trust TV, El-Rufai said he would have joined the protest at the National Assembly led by African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential aspirant Peter Obi and other opposition figures but for his absence from the country.

“I would have joined Mr. Peter Obi and other party leaders in protesting to the National Assembly to restore the real-time and mandatory transmission of results from the polling unit,” he said.

El-Rufai described electronic transmission of results as the most effective safeguard against electoral malpractice, arguing that rigging does not occur at polling units but during the collation process.

“The only way to stop manipulation is at the collection centers. That is where the real rigging takes place. It doesn’t happen at the polling unit,” he stated.

He expressed concern that while the House of Representatives has approved the provision for mandatory electronic transmission of results, the Senate is allegedly blocking its passage.

According to him, the amendment would significantly improve the credibility of elections but is being resisted for political reasons.

“This provision would have improved the quality of our elections, but we all know why the ruling party and the sitting government don’t want it. They know they cannot win elections without manipulation,” El-Rufai alleged.

He further claimed that altering results after voting gives the ruling party its only advantage. “The only way they have a fighting chance is to manipulate the results after people have voted,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nigerian Newssphere earlier reported that protesters on Monday morning besieged the National Assembly in Abuja to oppose the Senate’s decision against mandatory electronic transmission of election results.

Peter Obi was seen leading the protest, urging lawmakers to implement urgent electoral reforms to protect the integrity of future elections.

Electoral act: ‘Devil’ talking to Akpabio, Nigerians must stopped stop him—Adebayo

0

Former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has strongly criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the proposed amendment to the Electoral Act, warning that it poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Monday, Adebayo said the provision in the amendment requiring the prompt transmission of election results was deliberately designed to prevent manipulation of the electoral process.

He argued that delays in transmitting results create opportunities for interference after voting has ended, which he described metaphorically as allowing “the devil” to influence decisions once elections have been conducted.

According to Adebayo, the office of the Senate President demands discipline, integrity, and respect for democratic values. He recalled that past holders of the position, including Nnamdi Azikiwe, Joseph Wayas, and Chuba Okadigbo, upheld the dignity and responsibility attached to the office.

The former SDP flagbearer warned against what he described as “legislative rascality,” stressing that the controversy surrounding the Electoral Act amendment goes beyond partisan politics and strikes at the heart of Nigeria’s democratic survival.

Adebayo further emphasized the constitutional role of the National Assembly, noting that the Senate is a co-equal arm of government with far-reaching powers, including the authority to approve decisions as weighty as whether the country should go to war.

He added that anyone occupying the office of Senate President must rise above personal or external interests, likening the position in responsibility and stature to that of the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“The provision in the proposed new Electoral Act is saying that you send the election results with your God’s heart before the devil starts talking to you,” Adebayo said.

“The devil has started talking to Akpabio now, and that is why we want to stop him from the beginning.

“This position of Senate President is not new. Nnamdi Azikiwe was there. Joseph Wayas was there. Chuba Okadigbo was there. Why should he want to end democracy with legislative rascality? This is not a political issue; it is fundamental.

“You cannot occupy that office and become an errand boy for foreign or outside interests. The Senate has enormous powers on behalf of the people. Once you sit on that seat, you must be serious. It is a position comparable to that of the Chief Justice of Nigeria. ”.
