…As 13 Northern Governors insist on Southern presidency

…NWC disowns Adamu, backs Northern governors’ resolution

President, Muhammadu Buhari on Monday denied the imposition of Ahmed Lawan on the party as the presidential consensus candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The National Chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu had earlier announced Lawan as the consensus candidate ahead of the presidential primary election of the party.

But in clearing the air, the president said that he had “no preferred candidate,” and had “anointed no one,” and was determined to ensure that “there shall be no imposition of any candidate on the party.”

The stand of the president was contained in statement signed by the Senior special assistant to Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu yesterday.

According to the statement, the President Buhari said, “The party is important and its members must be respected, and made to feel they are important.

The President said he had a clear mind about what he was doing and asked the APC governors to feel the same way, “You were elected as I was. Have a clear mind as I have. God gave us the chance, we have no reason to complain.

“We must be ready to take pain as we take the joy. Allow the delegates to decide. The Party must participate, nobody will appoint anybody.”
13 Northern Governors insist on Southern decision

Also, the Northern Governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have insisted on zoning the presidential candidate’s slot to the South, thereby outrightly rejecting the choice of Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the consensus presidential candidate of the party.

In a meeting on Monday with President Muhammadu Buhari, the Northern Governors reaffirmed their stand that power should rotate to the Southern part of the country in 2023.

The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, briefed State House reporters after the meeting with the president at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

He said the 13 of them apologised to the president for receiving the information about their position after it was leaked.

The Governor, however, said that they took the decision in the interest of justice and peace in the country.

Lalong, who stated that they would hold another meeting by 5p.m. today among themselves, said the president agreed with their position and maintained that the presidential candidate must emerge through a transparent process.

He said President Buhari told them he did not have an anointed candidate for now and directed them to meet the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to agree on the succession plan.

In the absence of the Governor of Kogi State at the meeting where the power shift decision was taken, he said his colleague was not part of the agreement as his signature was not on the statement.

In his contribution, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State said it was the democratic right of the Kogi governor to excuse himself.
NWC disowns Adamu, backs Northern Governors’ decision

Similarly, the members of the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have denied endorsing Ahmad Lawan as the consensus presidential candidate of the party ahead of the party’s presidential primary.

While addressing journalist at the party’s secretariat after the NWC meeting, the National Organising Secretary of the party, Suleiman Argungun, however, stated that the issue of picking a consensus presidential candidate was not discussed at the meeting.

According to Argungun, Adamu only gave them the information, but they are yet to discuss it.
He further affirmed that the NWC were totally in support of the decisions of the Northern Governors to zone the presidency to Southern part of the Country.

Consensus: Tension mounts in APC over Adamu imposition of Lawan, Northern governors kick

0

Crisis has hit the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the announcement of Senate President Ahmed Lawan as consensus presidential aspirant by the national chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

Adamu made the announcement at the meeting of National Working Committee (NWC) on Monday in Abuja.

According to the statement, other aspirants including Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Dr. Kayode Fayemi and David Umahi, among others will however be allowed to contest the primary at the convention holding tomorrow at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

However, in a quick rebuttal, the northern governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have insisted that they would back a southerner to emerge as the presidential candidate of the ruling party in the 2023 general elections.

Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, stated this on Monday while briefing State House correspondents in Abuja.

The governors, 13 of them, made their position known following their meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Governor Lalong, in his briefing, clarified that the leaked memo that went viral last Saturday was the true position of the northern governors and they came to officially consult with the President.

According to the governor, President Buhari has not anointed any of the 23 aspirants expected to participate in the party’s primary as the flagbearer of the APC.

Rather, he explained that the President asked the governors to have a meeting with the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party to resolve the issue of a consensus candidate through democratic means.

Governor Lalong stated that the decision of the governors to return power to the South was to ensure equity, peace, and unity in the country.

Owo church attack: No justification whatsoever for carnage
The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the unprovoked attacks and killing of several innocent worshippers at the St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, Owo and called on the security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators of the dastardly criminality.
This was contained in a statement released to Newssphere by the Media Assistant to the CAN President, His Eminence, Rev Dr Samson Ayokunle, Pastor Adebayo Oladeji on Sunday.
“This is sad, wrong, condemnable, outrageous, unacceptable and satanic. There is no explanation for this unprovoked attack and assault on a place of worship. This is raw persecution. These people are possessed, demonic and are not working for the good of the country. May God descend heavily on them and fight them mindless agents of Satan from their roots in Jesus’ name.
“We are once again reiterating our quest for a total overhauling of the security architecture and are asking President Muhammadu Buhari to stop the recycling of those criminals and terrorists in the name of de-radicalising programme. If the programme is not counterproductive, how come the criminalities are always on the increase and nowhere is safe again.
“This menace of insecurity has gotten out of hands and is embarrassingly sore. Criminals are operating with impunity all over the country and unfortunately our government appears to be so busy with the 2023 general election that it has no time for the unending killings in the country. What legacy is the government and those who are the managers of our security architecture leaving behind for the unborn generation? We are praying for the government and the security agencies to get it right before it will be too late. If the Federal government is not interested in the State Police, what efforts are being put in place to arrest this unpleasant situation?
“We call on the State Governors to meet with the President to find the lasting solution to these killings. Issuing mere press statements of condemnations and what looks like empty threat is apparently not a way out of it.
“CAN commiserates with all the bereaved, the Olowo of Owo, Oba Gbadegesin Ogunoye, the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) and the Ondo State Government”, the statement reads.
Similarly, National Chairman of the Youth Wing CAN, Hon. Amb. Belusochukwu Enwere in a statement made available to NewsDirect described the attack as evil, wicked and monstrous.
“We are devastated, the nation is bleeding.
This is evil, wicked and a monstrous act .
“To the entire Christians youths and Christians, Is a black Sunday. It is too heavy to bear. The body of Christ and the church is violeted.
“Nigeria is bleeding and the entire nation are mourning.
“We call on all the entire Christian youths and by extension all Christians all over the world to observe three days mourning and for the souls of those killed and total recovery of the injured ones.
“The government must act now and ensure that the perpetrators are exposed and brought to book.
“I urge security agencies to commence full scale investigations in a bid to arrest the perpetrators of this dastardly act and to avoid recurrence
“We commiserate with the entire Christians and the Catholic community and pray to God to grant the departed souls eternal rest.
“Our heartfelt condolences to the Catholic community especially the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ondo and the entire Christians at largee”, he stated.
