…Harps On Training, Retraining Of Technicians For Efficiency

By Nkechi Isaac

The executive vice-chairman of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Prof. Mohammed Haruna has revealed the agency’s target to contribute 50 megawatts of solar energy to Nigeria’s national grid by 2023.

He made this known during the closing ceremony of the agency’s week-long skill acquisition training and youth empowerment for 100 youths on solar installation and maintenance in Awka, Anambra State over the weekend.

Haruna said the agency has, through its solar manufacturing plant in Karshi, doubled its capacity to 21mw per annum and will move its production capacity to 50mw to bridge the gap created by the importation of over 80 per cent of substandard products into the Nigerian market.

He harped on the need for training and retraining of technicians in the solar system electric power supply subsector, stressing that it is important for the nation to have a competent workforce if the nation seeks self-reliance and industrial development.

“Technicians must be trained and retrained for knowledge updating. Failure to acquire skills and training for solar electricity supply is the root of most failed solar installations across the country. This is frustrating and discouraging to customers, some of whom are considering the popular solar system as a myth instead of a reality.

“Some installations are a failure even before commissioning. No two solar system installations are the same, even [if they are] of the same size and capacity. Load survey, computation and analysis are on a case-by-case basis. Accordingly, you must acquire skills on how to carry out load survey, design, component specification and selection and, then, component matching in that order before installation. The solar power system is modular and there are specific methods and scientific approaches to installation, repairs and maintenance,” he said.

The NASENI boss reiterated that there can be no industrial development without a skilled workforce, stressing that Nigeria cannot continue to import machines, men and other equipment when it has the raw materials for its industries and can aspire for an industrial economy.

He maintained that skilled citizens are the most important of all components of the knowledge-based economy, adding that the mandate of skilled development given to NASENI by President Muhammadu Buhari is among the key legacies of the present administration.

Haruna further urged the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to commence a five-year programme to reboot tertiary education workshops and laboratories across the country with appropriate equipment that will make it possible for all students to acquire, at least, an occupational trade skill before graduation.
“Compulsory skill acquisition course is needed as an integral part of tertiary education curriculum of National University Commission (NUC), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) as a modification or substitute of entrepreneurship programme of tertiary education that is of limited impact,” he added.

In her remarks, the chairman, Senate Committee on Science and Technology, Sen. Uche Ekwunife was optimistic that the training will be beneficial to youths in the state.
“I strongly believe in the importance and gains of the training today which cannot be overemphasised.

“The mandate of NASENI is for capital goods in the areas of research on reverse engineering , industry, chemical, chemistry and engineering.
“The essence of this training is actually to train our youths on solar installation and maintenance.

“If you look at the way the country is going today, we are trying to find alternatives to energy and solar is one of them.

“I believe that if the trainees paid attention to what they were taught it will make them self-reliant and train others,” she said.

Ekwunife, who also chaired the event, thanked the agency on behalf of the committee for empowering the young people; a venture she called “important” and one which “Nigeria needs for rapid industrialization”.

First NCC Digital Park Set for Completion January 2023

…As Danbatta visits project site in Kano

Ahead of the auspicious commissioning of the Digital Industrial Park (DIP) project in Kano State, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, has, once again, paid an inspection visit to the site of the ongoing construction of the project in Kano State where he got an unequivocal commitment from the contractors that the project will be completed by January 2023.

The Friday’s inspection call by the NCC’s boss was part of the routine visits to ensure close monitoring and effective supervision of important projects that will have great impacts on the country’s socio-economic development.

During the visit, the EVC, who was accompanied by the NCC’s Head of Projects, Philip Eretan, and the EVC’s Chief of Staff, Malam Hafiz Shehu, among others, with the Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor, Prof. Yusif Alhassan, in attendance, emphasized the need for the contractors to expedite efforts in completing the project on schedule.

Addressing the contractors, Danbatta said that both the Federal and the State governments are following the progress being made at the construction site with keen interest owing to the value addition the project would make not only to the economy of the North-West geo-political zone but also to the country as a whole.

“This is a project that Nigerians are eagerly waiting to be completed. The Federal Government and the State government are following it with keen interest, and at NCC, our responsibility is to ensure that there’s no further delay in delivery as we have been doing everything possible to ensure that we have the project commissioned in the next few months.

“While I promise you that we will give you all the support you need, I also demand that progress report to be sent to me fortnightly over the two months period in order to ensure effective monitoring by us at NCC,” he said.

Speaking further, the EVC commended the State Governor for proving land at a prime location in Kano for the project, which he said is an indication of the value the government attaches to the project.

The DIPs currently being built across the six geo-political zones of the country by the NCC are expected to provide Innovation Labs and Digital Fabrication Laboratories (Fablabs) for use by digital innovators and entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into products and prototypes. The parks are also designed to provide broadband services and to have access to constant power supply.

This is not the first time the NCC boss would pay a visit to the construction site of the project located at Audu Bako Secretariat in the ancient city, which doubles as the commercial nerve centre of northern Nigeria.

The EVC’s latest visit was sequel to a similar visit to the construction site in July 2022 and other visits he had made much earlier, essentially to assess the level of work that has been done so far to ensure that the project is delivered within the set deadline.

During the July 2022 visit to the construction site, Danbatta pointed out that the project was conceived to support the Federal Government’s digital drive by facilitating the availability and accessibility of digital services across the country, and promoting their adoption and usage across all sectors, as well as providing youth employment in the country.

“The idea of putting these two things (i.e., skill acquisition and innovation) at the forefront of this very important initiative is to produce youths that can be self-reliant, generate employment for themselves and other Nigerians,” he said.

Danbatta had also stressed that no part of the country would be left out in benefitting from the initiative. “The project is another move to boost youth digital skills acquisition, promote innovations, provide jobs for the teeming Nigerian youth and ultimately support the overall digital economy agenda of the Federal Government,” he said.

APC political bandits kidnapped buhari from nigerians- sdp alleges

0
The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of targeting Prince Adebayo Adewole, its (SDP) presidential candidate for the 2023 election.

Addressing the press in Abuja on Friday, the Director-General of the SDP Presidential Campaign Council and former Minister, Solomon Dalung, also described President Muhammadu Buhari as the number one victim of kidnap because Nigerians can no longer have access to their President.

The SDP, which is one of the oldest political parties in the country, also called on Nigerians to vote for integrity and purposeful leadership come 2023.

SDP warned of an alleged attempt to intimidate other presidential candidates who are not of the major political parties and are making waves with issues-based campaigns.

Dalung, who was a minister of sports and youth development in the first tenure of President Buhari, lamented that the ruling party is currently generating documents as well as trying to use the police to intimidate Adebayo.

The former minister said his party was concluding plans to file a legal action against the APC, warning the Buhari-led administration against any move to truncate the transition of power in 2023.

He also asked President Buhari to stop narrowing the political space to favour the APC, insisting that whatever favour the presidency does for the APC presidential, such as the use of the Presidential Jet for campaign purposes, should also be extended to all other candidates.

”The days of hypocrisy and fake promises have gone. SDP has offered ourselves for scrutiny. Others should also come out and face Nigerians. 2023 is too critical for the unity of this country. Nigerians cannot afford that mistake again,” he said.

Speaking further, the minister said “The president, today is the number one victim of kidnap because Nigerians cannot see him.

“The man who was available during the campaign and shaking hands and dancing with Nigerians, today they are all victims of kidnap, political bandits have kidnapped them.

“You can not see or access them, people pay ransom to see them. That is not the presidency that we are looking for.”

2023: Tinubu’s gaffes, refusal to honour independent debates, town hall meetings

0

It has been a tough time for the All Progressives Congress, APC Presidential Campaign Committee due to the one to many gaffes, refusal to attend independent debates, town hall meetings by its candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

From ‘Recruit 50,000 to fight insurgency, Omo Agege incoming governor of Niger Delta, Worse to Bad, PD-APC and Balabloo-blu-bulav.

Tinubu has not attended independent debates, interviews or town all engagements except his engagement with the Arewa Consultative Forum.

On Friday, the former Lagos State governor turned down an invitation to the Arise TV Town Hall series. It would be recalled that he town down the previous series.

In what look like a personal attack on the Tinubu, the AriseTV intensified anti-Tinubu editorials one of it was a fake news(Stating that the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, did probing a court case involving Tinibu in the USA—which the station publicly acknowledged and apologised. It didn’t end at that, Arise Tv was fined by National Broadcasting Commission.

It would also be recalled that Governor Nasir Elrufai had during the Arewa engagement disclosed that many people close to Tinubu had encouraged him to attend because the forum had resolved to endorse a particular candidate.

“I want to thank Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for resisting all entreaties that he should not honour this invitation. He was told that this whole arrangement is meant to endorse a particular candidate, but he insisted that even if the arrangement is to endorse a particular candidate, i will come and i will change their minds,” Mr Elrufai had said.

Yesterday, a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Director, Media & Publicity, APC Presidential Campaign Council, said Tinubu will not attend AriseTV third series Townhall meeting contrary to the claim by the media.

The reason for avoiding any such debates may not be unconnected with his propensity to make gaffes, “slips of tongue” and perhaps perceive political inclination of organizers.

In the course of the campaign, his gaffes are growing. Virtually at all rallies, he makes comments that handlers often have to clarify.

Although, in some instances, comments like the ‘poisoned holy communion’ and ‘recharging the lake chad’ have since been clarified, however, there are many more gaffes that have been recorded.

Tinubu Top Five Gaffes

PD-APC

At the flag-off of the campaign in Jos, Plateau State, Tinubu in his closing remarks shouted, God bless the PD—APC.

Clearly, the candidate wanted to say “God bless APC” instead shouted God bless PD but caught himself midway and added “APC”.

Some of his supporters on social media tried to justify the gaffe by stating that “PD” refers to the G5 governors, whose rebellion is causing crisis in the main opposition party.

Despite the attempt, it remains a clear case of slip of tongue.

Turning a rotten situation to Bad

At the Kaduna State Investment and Economic summit, Mr Tinubu was paying glowing tributes to Elrufai, even persuading the latter to jettison his retirement plan and continue to serve.

Therefore, it was a rude shock when he stated that Elrufai has a way of turning a rotten situation to a bad one.

“We are not going to let you run away. Your vision, creativity and resilience in turning a rotten situation to a bad one are necessary at this critical time and that is why we are here.”

Hours after the comment, Bayo Onanuga had issued a statement, noting that it was a slip of tongue.

“It was a mere slip, that is not unusual in life, even among leaders of nations,” he stated.

However, Tinubu some days after, Tinubu disagreed with his spokesperson by insisting that “Some people need to understand idioms.”

“Balabloo-blu-bulav

While Hullabaloo is a word known in the dictionary, Balabloo-blu-bulav was the choice of Mr Tinubu during a campaign rally in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

He told the crowd that his town hall meetings are different from “balabloo-blu-bulava”.

As always, his campaign team described the phrase as a “sense of humor”. Festus Keyamo, the main spokesperson of the campaign, said in a tweet:

“Listen to the sense of humour of @officialABAT. He says he prefers a proper town hall meeting to the gibberish his opponents say elsewhere.”

Omo Agege is the incoming governor of Niger Delta State

In Gbaramatu, in his speech, while referring to the governorship candidate of the APC in Delta State, Ovie Omo-Agege, “Governor—Incoming— of Niger Delta State.”

Obviously, Niger Delta mostly refers to states around the delta wetland or oil-producing region in southern. Therefore, it is safe to say that Mr Tinubu wanted to say “Delta State” instead referred to Niger Delta State.

50 million recruitment

In 2021, during his 69 birthday colloquium, Mr Tinubu had in his speech suggested how to address insurgency through massive recruitment into the army. He stated that government must recruit 50 million youths into the army.

“Recruit 50 million youths into the army, take away from their (the insurgents)recruitment source,” he said.

His spokesperson, Tunde Rahman had in a statement clarified that Tinubu meant 500,000.

These gaffes continue to fuel rumours that the APC candidate may be suffering from some mental incapacity.

He said the interest in supporting the MSMEs is justified by their current contribution of more than half of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) prior to COVID-19 outbreak, and now constitute 96.7 per cent of entire businesses in the country, and therefore, “any effort to develop our economy without bringing such important sector into the equation will amount to efforts in futility.”

At the event, which had in attendance the Chairman of the Board of the NCC, Prof. Adeolu Akande; the Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Umar Danbatta; the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rasheed; and the Executive Secretary, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Prof Idris Bugaje, a book authored by Pantami, titled “Skills Rather Than Just Degrees” with foreword written by Brad Smith, President of Microsoft Corporation, was unveiled for the industry.

Pantami said the book is his intellectual contribution to bridging skills gap to enable Nigerians to tap into the opportunities that exist in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and other sectors of the economy.

The book was reviewed by three different Vice Chancellors – Prof. Muhammad Abdulazeez of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi; Prof Owuanari Georgewill of University of Port Harcourt; and Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas of Bayero University Kano, who commended the efforts of the Minister in putting his thoughts and experience to paper. They recommended the book, which they commended highly.

In their comments, NCC’s Akande and Danbatta, corroborated that the project will fast-track and enhance the ongoing efforts of the NCC’s to deepen connectivity towards achieving the targeted broadband penetration of 70 per cent by 2025.

NCC’s Chairman, Prof. Akande, assured of the commitment of the Commission in completing the projects, which will add the necessary fillip to achieving the major objectives spelt out in the NDEPS, 2020-2030.

The EVC of NCC, Prof. Danbatta, highlighted the Commission’s drive towards deepening broadband penetration in the country and the promotion of digital skills acquisition to improve service delivery in other sectors of the economy, including education, commerce, healthcare, agriculture, finance, transportation, governance, among others.

The event attracted so many stakeholders especially from the academia, as well as technology enthusiasts, including prospective start-up companies, fintech organisations and other interested sectors whose activities are billed to be energized through diligent implementation of the NDEPS and other extant policies guiding the digital economy agenda of the Nigerian government.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Sen. Adeleke Mamora has restated the ministry’s commitment to supporting the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) to achieve its mandate for an adequate, reliable, affordable supply of clean energy in the economy to support Nigeria’s Agenda 2050.
Mamora made this known during the commissioning of permanent offices and laboratories complex for the National Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation (NCEEC) located at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
“Energy efficiency and conservation, as well as deployment of renewable energy, are the pillars of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDGs), which has the goal of ensuring universal access to clean, reliable and affordable modern energy services by 2030,” he said.
The minister, therefore, commended the ECN for the foresight to seek approval for the establishment of the NCEEC for the nation in 2007 and for locating it at the prestigious university.
In his remarks, the director-general, ECN, Prof. Eli Bala said the choice of the university as the site was informed by the fact that Lagos had the highest energy consumption demand, with a high population, homes, transportation system, industries and commercial activities driven by electricity and fuels.
Listing the centre’s mandate, Bala said they include the development of guidelines for energy-efficient end-use products and advice on the implementation; development of energy-efficieny codes, standards and specifications for domestic, industrial and commercial facilities; gathering, analysing and managing energy supply and consumption data and information.
Others include serving as a centre for training high-level manpower in energy efficiency and conservation; developing and executing pilot/demonstration projects highlighting energy efficient concepts; disseminating information on energy efficiency awareness programmes (seminars, workshops, publications, etc.) and performing any other functions as may be directed by the Federal Government.
In the same vein, the former vice chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe commended the occasion, stating that one goal of the institution is moving up in its current universities’ ranking through research.
