Rising food prices: Nigerian govt announces plan to set up Commodity Board

0

The Nigerian federal government has announced plans to set up a Commodity Board to regulate rising food prices.

The Vice President, Kasim Shettima disclosed this on Tuesday during a two-day strategic meeting on climate change in Abuja.

Shettima said the board’s mandate includes assessing and regulating food prices and overseeing a strategic food reserve to stabilize prices of critical grains and other essential food items.

The Vice President reiterated that the government is working with security agencies to ensure that farmlands are safe.

He added that the government had provided 500,000 hectares of already mapped land that will be used to increase the availability of arable land for farming.

“Our solution to the potential food crisis has become immediate, medium, and long-term strategies. The short-term strategy entails revitalizing the food supply through specific interventions like the distribution of fertilizers and grains to farmers and households to counteract the effects of subsidy removal, fostering collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Water Resources for efficient farmland irrigation, ensuring year-round food production, and addressing price volatility by establishing a National Commodity Board.

“This board will continually assess and regulate food prices, maintaining a strategic food reserve for stabilizing prices of crucial grains and other food items,” Shettima said.

The development comes as Nigerians groaned over the high cost of living under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Nigerian lawmakers oppose bill to increase education qualifications of president, governors, NASS members

House of reps

The House of Representatives initiated constitutional amendments to raise the education qualifications required to contest elections in Nigeria. However, the bill encountered resistance and failed to gain approval in the House.

Sponsored by Oriyomi Onanuga, the bill was debated on Tuesday, and after over two hours of deliberation, it was ultimately stepped down.

Leading the debate, Onanuga argued that leaving education qualifications at the secondary school certificate level is inadequate for the country. She advocated for an upward revision to a minimum of a university degree for all elective positions.

“Are we saying our students have no reasoning?” she questioned during her lead debate.

Babajimi Benson emphasized the bill’s overdue nature: “I sponsored the same bill in the last assembly. It is what the House should support. Anyone opposed to this bill should be asked if their children are not in universities.”

Six other lawmakers, including Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere, and Leke Abejide, spoke in favour of the bill.

China argued that since primary school certificates are insufficient for private employment, they should not be deemed acceptable for public offices.

Abejide expressed concern, stating, “We cannot have mediocrity running the affairs in a nation or a country. It is very dangerous.”

However, seven lawmakers voiced opposition to the bill. Ahmed Jaha from Borno State emphasized that certification does not equate to wisdom and urged colleagues to maintain the current constitution.

Aliyu Madaki, also opposing the bill, remarked, “Your leadership quality is not determined by education.”

Facing growing opposition, Onanuga eventually stepped down the bill as more members expressed disagreement with its intent.

The Nigerian Postal Service, NIPOST and the Sierra Leone Government, through the Ministry of Communication, Technology, and Innovation, sought collaboration on a postal sector transformation strategy.

This was disclosed when Sierra Leone’s Minister of Communication, Technology and Innovation, Salima Bah, recently paid a working visit to the Postmaster General/CEO of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, at her office.

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Communication, Technology and Innovation, who appreciated the Postmaster General for the warm reception, also commended the Federal Government of Nigeria on the various initiatives to drive the digital transformation of the postal ecosystem.

She said that the postal sector plays a crucial role in the socio-economic development of nations by facilitating communication, trade and financial services. However, she acknowledged the numerous challenges the postal sector faces, which include declining mail volumes and increased competition from electronic communication channels. Hence, she stressed the importance of strategic partnerships to enable both nations to explore viable potentials by leveraging technology and innovation to create a tech ecosystem to drive transformation.

Odeyemi, in her response, said NIPOST is the primary provider of postal and related services in Nigeria. Given its historical prominence, the organization strives to adapt to the changing business environment.

Odeyemi said declining revenue, obsolete infrastructure and limited technological advancements have hindered the growth and relevance of the post.

She noted that the emergence of the present administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Renewed Hope Agenda and the strategic digital transformation policies of the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, under the dynamic leadership of Bosun Tijani, NIPOST’s business model is leveraging strategic partnerships and innovative technology to promote trade and market development.

Recognizing the need for modernization, both NIPOST and the Sierra Leone Ministry of Communication, Technology and Innovation aim to collaborate on a postal sector transformation strategy. The primary objectives of the collaboration are to enhance service quality by leveraging technology and innovation and to improve the speed, efficiency and reliability of postal services in both countries, expanding financial services.

The collaboration will explore opportunities to provide financial services through the postal network, including mobile banking, remittances, and microfinance. In addition to strengthening infrastructure, the collaboration intends to invest in upgrading and expanding the postal infrastructure, including postal offices, sorting centres, and delivery networks.

Importantly, the partnership will work towards creating an enabling environment for e-commerce, focusing on facilitating cross-border trade and enhancing last-mile delivery capabilities.
