ADC presidential ticket: I’ll defeat you- Amaechi dares Atiku to primaries

0

Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has challenged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to face him in the presidential primaries of the African Democratic Congress, insisting that zoning should not determine the party’s candidate.

Amaechi made the remarks on Monday during an interview on Trust TV while speaking about his readiness for the party’s primary election.

The former Rivers State governor said Atiku had publicly stated that he does not support zoning, adding that the best option would be for all aspirants to test their popularity at the primaries.

“Atiku said he does not like zoning, so let’s go to the primaries,” Amaechi stated.

He also expressed hope that the former vice president would, for the first time, lose a primary election.

“I heard him say he has never failed in a primary before. I hope this will be the first time he fails the primaries,” he added.

Amaechi, however, argued that winning party primaries had not translated into electoral victory for Atiku in past presidential contests.

“That is not even the issue. The issue is that each time he won the primaries, he did not win the main election,” he said.

The ADC chieftain further urged politicians to avoid divisive regional politics, stressing that leadership should be driven by national interest rather than North-South considerations.

According to him, he has consistently rejected ethnic-based politics and would rather emulate former President Olusegun Obasanjo, whom he described as a nationalist.

“You may like him or not, but Obasanjo was a Nigerian president, not a Yoruba president,” Amaechi said.

Reacting to a question on the possibility of another aspirant, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, stepping down for Atiku, Amaechi simply wished

Debt: Nigerian Newborn already starts life owing N691,000—ActionAid

0

Non-governmental organization ActionAid Nigeria has expressed concern over Nigeria’s growing debt profile, stating that every child born in the country now begins life with an estimated debt burden of N691,000.

The country director of the organization, Andrew Mamedu, made the remark on Monday during an interview on Arise Television while discussing the nation’s rising debt despite the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira.

According to him, borrowing itself is not a problem if it is done responsibly and tied to productive ventures.

“With Nigeria’s rising debt now, it means that a newborn baby already starts life owing about N691,000,” he said.

Mamedu noted that many countries across the world, including China and the United States, also rely on borrowing, sometimes beyond their annual budgets, but stressed that accountability and proper planning are essential.

He explained that borrowing should not be channelled towards consumption but should instead be tied to productive capital projects capable of generating returns and repaying the debt.

He further emphasized the need for transparency in the use of borrowed funds, adding that government borrowing should align with fiscal responsibility principles and follow a clearly defined fiscal plan.

I believe so—Kwankwaso makes fresh revelation on joint ticket with Peter Obi

A chieftain of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has hinted at the possibility of a joint presidential ticket with former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso made the disclosure on Sunday during a live interview on Trust TV, where he spoke on ongoing political alignments and shared interests between the Obidient movement and the Kwankwasiyya movement.

According to him, both groups share similar ideologies and aspirations for Nigeria, especially in areas affecting young people.

When asked whether Nigerians should expect an Obi-Kwankwaso ticket under the NDC platform in 2027, Kwankwaso responded, “I believe so, and taking into account the party, I think that is their mindset.”

He explained that recent engagements between both camps showed strong similarities in their political visions and development goals for the country.

“In recent times, we actually tried to check what the Obidients were up to politically and what they wanted to do for Nigeria. When we compared the two movements, we realized that our goals are more or less the same,” he said.

Kwankwaso noted that both movements are focused on improving governance and addressing critical issues such as education, employment opportunities, and security.

“In summary, we want to make Nigeria a better place for all of us, especially for young men and women who need the attention of government. They don’t need too much, just basic things like education, job opportunities, security, and so on,” he added.

He further stated that experts from both sides were expected to review and compare their policy blueprints as discussions continue.

“In fact, we have gone so far, but based on our discussions with them, I believe we have one target — to make Nigeria a better place,” Kwankwaso said.

FA Cup Final: Semenyo’s goal gives Manchester City victory over Chelsea to earn double

0

Antoine Semenyo came through for Manchester City as the club completed a domestic double after edging Chelsea 1-0 in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

The victory also ended a run of consecutive Wembley disappointments for Pep Guardiola’s side, who had suffered defeats in the last two finals against Manchester United and Crystal Palace.

Both teams struggled to create clear-cut opportunities in a cagey first half, which finished without a goal.

The breakthrough eventually arrived after the restart when Antoine Semenyo capped off a brilliant flowing move to score the decisive goal for City.

The triumph means City adds the FA Cup to the Carabao Cup title they won in March after beating Arsenal 2-0 in the final.

Despite the cup success, Guardiola’s men remain two points behind Arsenal in the Premier League title race with two matches left to play.

IED explosion eliminates six ISWAP bomb makers

0

Win for Nigeria for against insecurity as Six suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, have reportedly died following the premature detonation of an improvised explosive device, or IED, in the Marte Local Government Area of Borno State.

The incident was disclosed by counter-insurgency analyst Zagazola Makama in a post shared on X.

According to security sources cited by Makama, the explosion occurred around 7:00 a.m. on May 16, 2026, in Jubilaram, where the insurgents were allegedly assembling an explosive device.

The report identified the group’s leader as Abu Umar, described as a suspected bomb-making expert, who was killed alongside five other militants in the blast.

Three additional members of the group were said to have sustained severe injuries.

Intelligence reports indicated that the deceased suspects belonged to an ISWAP IED manufacturing unit operating within the Marte–Kerenoa–Wulgo corridor, an area known for insurgent activities in the Lake Chad Basin.

The explosion was believed to have occurred while the device was being prepared, triggering a premature detonation that destroyed the site and caused multiple casualties.

Security sources noted that the death of Abu Umar and other bomb-making specialists could significantly weaken the group’s IED operations in the region.

The blast also reportedly affected an IED production facility located between Arinna Maimasallaci and Arinna Ciki, which may now be temporarily out of operation.

Military sources added that the development could further reduce ISWAP’s operational capacity along key routes within the Marte axis.

Authorities are also said to be considering follow-up air and ground offensives aimed at exploiting the situation and limiting insurgents’ activities in the area.
