1. At least 15 farmers were reportedly killed in a fresh attack on seven villages of Manden, Jibin, Tim, Jiblang, Koppang, Mihdihin, and Jilem of Chakfem district of Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State. The attackers reportedly burnt down several houses and looted many animals in the villages belonging to community members.

2. Suspected bandits have attacked the Kakangi community in the western part of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing five farmers. It was gathered that out the five, four are from the same family.

3. Kaduna-The Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, has lamented that the scourge of banditry, kidnappings and other criminalities have worsened the pains of the North, leaving families bereaved and communities devastated. ACF Chairman, Chief Mamman Osuman, SAN, said at an event that the North continues to lose lives to “evil criminals, psychopaths, gangsters, bandits, marauders and terrorists,” in addition to natural causes and disasters.

4. The Police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested a self-acclaimed medical doctor, Sunday Okon Akpan, for allegedly killing a 35-year-old woman during a botched abortion at his clinic in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area. The suspect, who owns and operates Full Life Medical Centre in Ikot Obio Odong, was discovered to be a community health practitioner with no medical licence or nursing qualification.

5. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on Thursday, declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not reduce itself to the “gutter level” of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, just as he disclosed that the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) will take a stand on zoning and other issues during its meeting on Monday.

6. President Bola Tinubu departed Yokohama, Japan, on Thursday night for Brazil, where he will begin a state visit on Sunday, August 24. Presidential spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, said in a statement that the President would make a stopover in Los Angeles before proceeding to Brasília, the Brazilian capital.

By-Election: INEC presents certificates to new lawmakers

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday issued Certificates of Return to winners of the Aug. 16 by-elections.

The certificates were presented to newly elected senators and members of the House of Representatives at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja by National Commissioners representing the respective constituencies.

Speaking after receiving his certificate, Senator-elect for Anambra South, Emmanuel Nwachukwu, pledged to deliver authentic and impactful representation, particularly addressing the needs of business people and persons with disabilities in the region.

“We will work across party lines to address issues such as erosion, health, and education.

“My goal is for the people of Anambra South to feel genuinely represented,” he said.

Nwachukwu highlighted the severe environmental degradation in the area, describing it as the “erosion capital of Nigeria”, and expressed intent to collaborate with both local and international experts to tackle the crisis.

In his remarks, Senator-elect Joseph Ikpea (APC-Edo Central) vowed not to disappoint his constituents.

He succeeds Monday Okpebholo, who resigned his Senate seat to contest the Edo governorship election.

“The way I attend to my people now will determine if they’ll support me for a second term,” Ikpea noted.

Also speaking, Omosede Igbinedion (APC-Edo), Member-elect for Ovia Federal Constituency, expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, the Edo State Governor, and her constituents for their support.

“I dedicate this victory to the people. I’ll work hard to exceed their expectations in the National Assembly,” she said.

Meanwhile, INEC has announced that Certificates of Return for State Assembly members-elect would be presented on Friday by Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at INEC state offices by 11 a.m.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Ambassador Coker passed away on Saturday, August 16, following a brief illness.

2. The Anambra State Government has dismissed eight vigilante operatives who assaulted a serving female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Miss Edema Jennifer Elohor, in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of the state. The Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi disclosed this in Awka on Wednesday.

3. The Inspector General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, has approved the creation of two new Area Commands and the upgrade of five police stations to Divisions in Benue State. The Benue State Police Command, in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, explained that the structural adjustment became necessary as a result of challenges confronting the Command in troubled areas.

4. Legendary actor Fabian Adibe, best known for his role in the NTA adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s classic novel, “Things Fall Apart,” has died. The actor, who celebrated his 82nd birthday in February 2025, died peacefully in the early hours of Wednesday.

5. Barring last minute change, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state has approved September 26, for the coronation of Oba Rasidi Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan. The day was chosen after a meeting between the governor and the former governor which held at the Ondo Street Bodija residence of the monarch.

6. Three persons died on Wednesday in an accident along Nwanwu Junction, Igbeagu along the Enugu Abakaliki Ogoja highway. According to eyewitness accounts, the crash was caused by a cement mixer truck that reportedly lost its brakes while descending from Nwezenyi.

 

Nigerian Ambassador, Obasanjo Coker dies mysteriously

Ambassador Taofik Obasanjo Coker, Nigeria’s Consul General in Buea, Republic of Cameroon, has passed away suddenly.

His death was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.

According to the government, Coker passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2025, following a brief illness.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces, with deep sorrow, the sudden demise of Ambassador Taofik Obasanjo Coker, the Consul General of Nigeria in Buea, Republic of Cameroon, who unfortunately passed on after a brief illness on Saturday, 16th August 2025,” Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Wednesday by its Spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

Nigerian young footballer slum, dies in Delta

A young Nigerian footballer, Wealth Ogunbor, who played for Ogunbor FC has slumped and died during a recent competition.

The sad incident occurred at STC Field in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State.

The deceased was pronounced dead when he was rushed to the hospital.

The football club that the deceased plays for is owned by his father, Ogunbor.

The incident has thrown the whole family of the deceased into a statement of mourning as the moment.

Meanwhile, Nigerian-born and Benin Republic footballer, Razak Omotoyossi, is dead

Omotoyossi, who was born in Nigeria but representing the national team of Benin Republic at international level, died at the age of 39 on Tuesday.

 

 

 

EPL: Roy Keane predicts title winners, names teams to finish top 5 this season

Manchester United legend, Roy Keane, has predicted the team to win the Premier League this season.

Keane sees Arsenal finally winning the title after many years and last season’s champions, Liverpool finishing second.

Keane, in his prediction shared on Sky Sports, does not see Chelsea anywhere within the top four.

Arsenal under Mikel Arteta have come second in the last three Premier League seasons.

Arsenal finished behind Manchester City in the first two seasons and fell behind Liverpool last season.

However, Keane believes that the time for the Gunners have finally come, backing them to lift the title this season on Sky Sports

It would be Arsenal’s first Premier league title since 2004 if things go according to Keane’s prediction.

Keane also believes Manchester City would finish third position from last season.

Chelsea would finish fifth, while Newcastle United would finish fourth, according to Keane.

Arsenal recorded a narrow win over Manchester United on Sunday while the Reds kicked off their title defence with a win over  Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday, August 15.

Chelsea on the other hand, played out a goalless draw against Crystal Palace, while Manchester City beat their last weekend’s opponents 4-0.

EPL: Salah names team to win title ahead of Liverpool this season

Liverpool ace, Mohamed Salah, has not tipped the Reds to retain their Premier League title this season.

The Egyptian has instead picked Arsenal to finally emerge English champions again for the first time in many years.

Recall that Arsenal finished as runners-up in the last three seasons.

Last season, the Gunners finished 10 points behind Liverpool, who won it in Arne Slot’s first year.

But Salah believes Mikel Arteta’s side will end their 20-year drought this time around.

Speaking to AFTV at the PFA Awards on Tuesday night, Salah said: “I think you [Arsenal] have a great team this season. You have a really good chance.

“I think you are favourites now because you have players that have been together for five years.”

1. The Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo has directed that all phones and other electronic devices must be switched off during critical stages of flights. The NCAA DG also directed all domestic airline operators to amend their operations manuals to reflect the new directive and submit them for immediate approval.

2. The Department of State Services (DSS) has cautioned a Federal High Court in Abuja against granting bail to the five men being prosecuted over their alleged involvement in the June 5, 2022 attack at St. Francs Xavier Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State in view of their alleged link with foreign terrorist groups. The DSS, in a counter-affidavit to the defendants’ bail application, also raised concern about their capacity to interfere with prosecution’s witnesses if granted bail.

3. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Nyesom Wike, yesterday, declared that the 2027 presidential ambition of former Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, is dead on arrival insisting that Amaechi would be the last person considered for the party’s ticket. He also alleged that former Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF, Babachir Lawal, is angry with President Bola Tinubu because he was not chosen as vice president.

4. A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the temporary freezing of four Jaiz Bank accounts linked to the immediate-past Group Managing Director, GMD, of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Mr Mele Kyari, over alleged fraud. The trial Judge, Justice Emeka Nwite made the order, on Tuesday after counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, moved an ex-parte motion to the effect.

5. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has grilled senior officials of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, over allegations of fraud and mismanagement during the 2025 Hajj operations. Those questioned include Aliu Abdulrazak, Commissioner of Policy, Personnel and Finance, PPMF, and Aminu Muhammed, Director of Finance and Accounts, DFA.

6. The Naira on Tuesday depreciated to N1,555 per dollar in the parallel market from N1,550 per dollar on Monday. But the Naira appreciated to N1,534.5 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM).

 

Aba Power announces weeklong outage

Nigeria’s electricity distribution company, Aba Power, has announced week-long electricity outage across its franchise in Abia State.

The electricity disruptions are expected to take place between the 21st and 28th of 2025, a statement by Aba Power said on Tuesday.

According to the Disco, the electricity disruption is due to its primary power provider, the Geometric Power Aba Limited (GPAL) planned maintenance of gas supplier infrastructure.

Consequently, the disco would, within the period, rely on supply from national grid.

“Dear Valued Customer, We have just been informed by our primary power provider, Geometric Power Aba Limited (GPAL), of critical infrastructure maintenance by their gas supplier, which will impact GPAL’s ability to generate and supply power from 21 August to 28 August 2025.

“During this period, we will rely mainly on power imports from the national grid to serve our customers.

“While grid supply may be limited, we assure you that we will do our best to ensure that all stakeholders are duly serviced.

“We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause and hope that this timely message will enable customers to plan,” the notice seen by Nigerian Newssphere reads.
