It’s false- ICPC denies holding Amnesty International staff hostage in Abuja

0

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has dismissed reports claiming its operatives held staff of Amnesty International hostage in Abuja.

In a statement issued by the Commission’s spokesperson, Okor Odey, the anti-graft agency described the reports as false, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary tension.

The reports, which circulated on Thursday, alleged that ICPC officers stormed and attacked the Abuja office of Amnesty International. However, the Commission clarified that its operatives never entered Amnesty International’s premises.

According to ICPC, its officers were instead at the IHS Regional Office on Dar es Salaam Street, Wuse II, Abuja, on a lawful assignment when the alleged confrontation occurred.

The statement explained that during an earlier visit to deliver an official letter, ICPC officers were obstructed and prevented from completing their duties by the Chief Security Officer and other security personnel of IHS. The officers were reportedly forced out of the building, prompting the commission to obtain a search warrant in line with legal procedures.

“The ICPC is a responsible, law-abiding agency and expects cooperation from individuals and corporate bodies while carrying out its statutory responsibilities,” the statement said.

The Commission added that it will not tolerate any attempt to obstruct its officers during official duties.

ICPC further revealed that the Director of Regulatory Affairs at the IHS Regional Office, Saidu Abdullahi, has submitted a written apology on behalf of the company, describing the incident as unfortunate and assuring that the lapses on the part of the security personnel would be addressed.

The Commission urged the public to disregard the misleading publication, stressing that it does not reflect the true events.

Angry Driver knocks down Lagos Realtor in Parking Dispute

A tragic incident has occurred in Lagos State as a 36-year-old realtor, Yinka Agboola, has died after he was allegedly run over by an unidentified driver during a dispute over a parking space at Royal Pine Estate, Orchid Road, Lekki.

The confrontation reportedly began when residents questioned the suspect over improper parking that was obstructing movement within the estate.

According to witnesses, the driver became aggressive when asked to move his vehicle to ease traffic flow. The incident occurred on Monday evening.

An X user, @Ifeoluwaar, who first raised the alarm on Thursday, said residents had even offered the driver an alternative parking spot. Instead, he allegedly issued threats, telling one resident, “Do you know who I am? I will kill you right now.”

As tensions rose, Agboola — also a resident — reportedly intervened in an attempt to calm the situation.

Witnesses claim the suspect entered his car and began reversing and accelerating aggressively. Agboola tried to restrain him, but the driver allegedly sped off, leading to the fatal impact captured on CCTV. Footage posted online shows a white Mercedes-Benz reversing dangerously toward a group of residents, and another clip captures the moment Agboola was struck.

Residents rushed Agboola to an intensive care unit at an undisclosed hospital, prompting widespread fundraising efforts on social media. However, a user identified as @Omolomo announced on Wednesday that he had passed away in the early hours of the day.

Public pressure on the police has intensified, with the suspect’s vehicle number plate already circulated on social media.

Agboola’s sister, Oluwadamilola, confirmed to our correspondent that the case has been formally reported at the Ajah Police Division.

“I went to the Ajah Police Station. The witnesses had already visited earlier, but I went yesterday to give my statement,” she said, noting that the suspect has not yet been located.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, requested that enquiries be sent via text message but had not responded as of the time of filing this report.

US seizes Nigerian-owned supertanker

0

The United States Coast Guard, in collaboration with the US Navy, has seized a Nigerian-owned supertanker, Skipper, over allegations of crude oil theft, piracy, and other transnational crimes.

The vessel, a 20-year-old Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) with IMO Number 9304667, is reportedly operated by Nigeria-based Thomarose Global Ventures Ltd., though official documents list Triton Navigation Corp. of the Marshall Islands as the registered owner.

Authorities said the tanker was found flying the Guyanese flag without authorization at the time it was intercepted. Guyana’s Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) later clarified that the vessel “is not on its registry and was using the Guyanese flag without approval.”

US security officials explained that the seizure was carried out under American law enforcement authority and was publicly disclosed by President Donald Trump.

Beyond suspicions of crude oil theft, investigators are also examining the tanker’s possible involvement in drug trafficking and potential links to a network reportedly funded by Iranian-affiliated and other Islamist-backed money-laundering groups.

A search at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in Abuja revealed that Thomarose Global Ventures Ltd. is inactive. The company, registered with number 1007876, lists 111 Jakpa Road, Effurun, Warri, Delta State, as its address but has no contact numbers on record.

Reacting to the development, the president of the Centre for Marine Surveyors Nigeria, Engr. Akin Olaniyan, said the case raises concerns about regulatory oversight, especially if the tanker indeed departed from Nigerian waters.

“If the vessel emanated from Nigeria, it suggests that our Port State Control is practically nonexistent,” he said. “This is not about Nigeria as a nation but about enforcement of regulations.”

Similarly, the National President of the Oil and Gas Service Providers Association of Nigeria (OGSPAN), Mazi Colman Obasi, expressed surprise. “I have never heard that Nigeria owns a supertanker, let alone one that is inactive at the CAC. Government agencies can certainly do more,” he stated.

The President of the Ship Owners Association of Nigeria (SOAN), Otunba Sola Adewumi, said he needed more information before commenting, while former NIMASA Director-General, Mr. Temisan Omatseye, also noted that available details remain insufficient.

NIMASA spokesperson, Mr. Edward Osagie, said the agency had not received any official report and advised that a formal inquiry be submitted.

An energy analyst in Port Harcourt voiced concern that illegal activities in the oil sector persist despite the presence of regulatory agencies and private security contractors.

“All agencies need to do more than they currently do,” he said. “No country can progress when its own citizens continue to sabotage its resources.”

Breaking new ground: My salary as church founder was once N300 monthly—Oyedepo

0

Bishop David Oyedepo, founder and president of Living Faith Church Worldwide, Winners’ Chapel, has revealed that he once earned only N300 as his monthly salary in the early days of his ministry.

Speaking on Thursday during the ongoing Shiloh program, Oyedepo told thousands of worshippers that he depended solely on God for sustenance when he committed to full-time ministry.

Sharing his experience, he recalled asking, “Jesus, who pays me now that I’m going into full-time ministry?” before receiving clarity from scripture. He referenced Luke 10, noting how Jesus sent out the seventy disciples without material provisions, assuring them that “the laborer is worthy of his hire.”

He likened ministry work to military service, saying no soldier returns home to look for money to buy uniforms or weapons because the authority that enlisted them is responsible for their needs.

Oyedepo stressed that he never prayed to God about how he would survive financially and never solicited support from anyone throughout his early years in ministry.

“My salary in the church as resident pastor and founder was N300 a month,” he said. “I never lobbied for resources or sent anyone to beg on my behalf. For 41 years, we have depended solely on God.”

He urged Christians to trust in God’s provision, adding that obedience to divine instruction remains the key to both spiritual and material breakthroughs.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that Oyedepo declared open the week-long Shiloh program on Tuesday, December 9th, 2025.

You Can’t Shut Me Down — Oshiomhole, Ndume Clash During Reno Omokri’s Screening

0

A heated confrontation broke out on Thursday between Senators Adams Oshiomhole and Ali Ndume during the Senate’s screening of ambassadorial nominee, Reno Omokri.

The disagreement erupted as both lawmakers expressed sharply different views on Omokri’s suitability for the diplomatic role.

In a video from the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs session, Oshiomhole and Ndume engaged in a brief shouting match. Oshiomhole strongly backed Omokri’s nomination, describing the former presidential aide as a patriotic Nigerian who consistently defends the country.

Ndume, however, insisted that proper procedures must be followed before any endorsement is made.

Trouble started when Ndume attempted to stop Oshiomhole from speaking, prompting Oshiomhole to fire back:

“Until you are called, you cannot shut me down.” He added that he had the chairman’s permission to speak, saying:

“You’re not the Chairman and cannot exercise powers you don’t have.”

Oshiomhole further argued that Omokri has demonstrated fairness and integrity, noting that the nominee is willing to admit when he is wrong and acts in the nation’s interest.

“For me, he is a pragmatist. This young man has shown that when he sees compelling evidence, he is not ashamed to adjust his position. From what I’ve seen, he is working and deserves the support of everyone who wants progressive governance,” Oshiomhole said.

He concluded by stressing his experience as a former governor, stating:

“When I speak, those who are not governors should listen.”

The screening session continued after the exchange, with the committee expected to submit its report to the Senate.

Ambassadorial screening: ‘Take a bow and go’ – Senate clears Fani-Kayode, Dambazau [Video]

0

The Nigerian Senate on Thursday asked former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, and former Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, to take a bow and go during their ambassadorial screening.

Nigerian Newssphere earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu’s ambassadorial nominees had arrived at the National Assembly ahead of the exercise. Among those sighted were former presidential spokesperson Reno Omokri and former Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Their screening comes amid renewed calls from former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, urging President Tinubu to withdraw the list. Ndume argued that the current composition of the nominees breaches the Federal Character principle as required by the Nigerian Constitution.
