Michael Reagan, the son of former United States President Ronald Reagan, has died at the age of 80.
The Reagan family announced on Tuesday that he passed away on Sunday in Los Angeles, surrounded by family members.
“Michael was and will always be a beloved husband, father, and grandfather,” the family said in a statement. “We are heartbroken as we grieve the loss of a man who brought immense joy and inspiration to everyone who knew him.”
One of President Reagan’s five children, Michael Reagan was a well-known conservative commentator, author, and nationally syndicated radio host. He was also a vocal defender of his father’s political legacy.
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute described him as a “steadfast guardian” of the late president’s ideals.
“Michael Reagan devoted his life to conviction, purpose, and advancing President Reagan’s values,” said Fred Ryan, chairman of the foundation’s board. “He used his platform to promote freedom, personal responsibility, and the principles that defined his father’s presidency.”
Former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker also paid tribute, saying Reagan inspired generations of young conservatives.
According to the Young America’s Foundation, Michael Reagan died after battling cancer.
Born on March 18, 1945, Michael Reagan was adopted shortly after birth by Ronald Reagan and his first wife, actress Jane Wyman. The couple also had two daughters, Maureen Reagan, who died in 2001, and Christine Reagan, who died shortly after birth.
President Reagan later had two more children, Patti Davis and Ron Reagan, with his second wife, former First Lady Nancy Reagan.
Michael Reagan is survived by his wife, Colleen, their children, Ashley and Cameron, and his grandchildren.
