LaLiga: Real Madrid appoint Arbeloa as Xabi Alonso’s replacement

Real Madrid have confirmed the appointment of Álvaro Arbeloa as their new manager, following the dismissal of Xabi Alonso.

The Spanish giants announced Alonso’s sacking on Monday, just seven months into his tenure. The decision came a day after Los Blancos suffered a 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Supercopa final.

Arbeloa steps up from his role as head coach of Real Madrid Castilla, the club’s reserve side, where he has impressed with his work in player development.

The 42-year-old is a former Real Madrid defender who began his playing career at the club before moving to Liverpool, where he played alongside Alonso. He returned to Madrid in 2009 and spent seven seasons with the first team before retiring.

Arbeloa rejoined the club in a coaching capacity in 2020, working within the academy system, and now takes charge of the senior team at a crucial stage of the season.
