The United States has lauded the Nigerian government for fast-tracking the prosecution of terrorism-related cases, describing the conviction of 386 Islamist militants as a major breakthrough for the country’s justice system.
The commendation was made public on Sunday in a statement shared via X by a senior adviser for Arab and African Affairs at the US Department of State.
According to the US official, the convictions represent a significant step toward accountability, especially in cases that had previously experienced prolonged delays within Nigeria’s judicial system.
The statement highlighted the importance of timely and transparent legal processes in tackling extremism and boosting public trust in judicial institutions.
The United States also reaffirmed its support for Nigeria’s efforts to improve judicial efficiency and fairness, stressing that respect for the rule of law remains vital for achieving lasting security, stability, and safety nationwide.
“The United States commends the Nigerian government for its strong commitment to expediting trials addressing terrorism and related crimes. We welcome the convictions of 386 Islamist militants in cases that had previously faced significant delays in the courts, and we recognize this as an important step toward accountability and justice,” the statement read.
