United States President Donald Trump on Monday announced the imposition of a 25 per cent tariff on countries that maintain business dealings with Iran.
The announcement was made via Trump’s Truth Social account, where he declared that the policy takes immediate effect.
“Effective immediately, any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America,” Trump wrote.
He added, “This order is final and conclusive. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Analysts say the decision could significantly impact U.S. trade relations with major economies, including China, India, the United Arab Emirates and members of the European Union, many of which have ongoing commercial ties with Iran.
The move comes amid escalating unrest in Iran, where human rights organisations have reported that hundreds of people were killed during a violent crackdown on anti-government protests that intensified over the weekend.
Trump had earlier warned that the United States could consider intervention if the Iranian government resorted to violence against demonstrators.
