Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has reacted after popular singer Davido referred to him as “Bingo” in a social media post.
The exchange followed Omokri’s criticism of Davido for wearing a customized jacket bearing the names of abducted Oyo schoolchildren during a performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Responding to Omokri’s remarks, Davido wrote in a now-viral post: “Umu Bingo @renoomokri fowl.”
Reacting on Tuesday, Omokri shared screenshots of the post on Instagram, describing Davido’s comment as “feedback” and expressing surprise at the insult.
“Dear Mr. David Adeleke AKA Davido, thank you for your feedback. I was rather surprised by your response to my post. Most shocking is your insult,” he wrote.
Omokri said he believed Davido was angered by his criticism of the singer’s decision to spotlight the issue of kidnappings on an international stage.
“You are an international celebrity whom Nigeria is proud of. Coming to insult me on my Instagram profile with such vulgar words should be beneath you,” he said.
According to Omokri, while Davido’s intention may have been noble, drawing global attention to the activities of kidnappers and terrorists could inadvertently help them spread fear and gain publicity.
“I did that because while your intention may be good and you think you are pressuring the government, the actual effect of what you did is to give publicity to the terrorists and help them spread fear, recruit new members, and raise funds,” he stated.
Omokri contrasted Davido’s action with that of American content creator and streamer IShowSpeed, whom he praised for promoting Nigeria positively during the World Cup.
“Meanwhile, IShowSpeed, an American, at that same event used the global stage of the World Cup to market Nigeria by wearing the jersey and speaking well about Nigeria,” Omokri added.
