A member of the West Virginia National Guard, Sarah Beckstrom, who was shot near the White House on Wednesday, has died from her injuries.
President Donald Trump announced her death during a press briefing on Thursday, describing Beckstrom as “an incredible person, outstanding in every single way.”
The attacker, identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal from Afghanistan, had opened fire on two National Guard members stationed near the U.S. capital.
Providing an emotional update, Trump said Beckstrom “just passed away… She’s looking down at us right now. Her parents are with her.”
The former president labelled the incident a “terrorist attack” and criticized the Joe Biden administration’s policy that allowed Afghans who worked with U.S. forces during the Afghanistan War to resettle in the United States.
