Tension as Nigerian court convicts Nnamdi Kanu of terrorism in his absence

There is palpable tension in Nigeria as Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has found the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, guilty on count 1 of the terrorism charges against him.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that Kanu is facing an eight-count charge of terrorism filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

While reading the judgement, Justice Omotosho stated that the IPOB leader is guilty of committing an act of terrorism against the Federal Republic of Nigeria by threatening that people will die and the world will be at a standstill during a live broadcast.

The judge said, “Mr Kanu knew what he was doing; he was bent on carrying out these threats without consideration for his own people.

“From the incontroverted evidence it is clear that the defendant carried out a preparatory act of terrorism.

“He had the duty to explain himself but failed to do so.”

Reacting to the development, Kanu’s lawyer Aloy Ejimakor wrote on X, “The Judge just convicted Onyendu MAZI NNAMDI KANU on Counts 1 and 2 (acts in furtherance of terrorism). There’s palpable tension in the courtroom, as the judge is presently analysing Count 3, ominously.”

Nigerian Newssphere reports that the judge is still reading the rest of the judgement at the time of filing this report.
