Tension flared at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Abuja on Monday as supporters of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai reportedly clashed with security operatives.
The situation escalated when security forces allegedly fired tear gas to disperse the crowd that had gathered at the anti-graft agency’s premises.
In a video seen by our reporter, some protesters were heard vowing to return despite the disruption, chanting, “We will come back; when it clears, we will come back,” indicating their resolve to continue the protest.
Earlier in the day, El-Rufai reportedly arrived at the EFCC headquarters accompanied by hundreds of supporters. The development followed reports that his arrest was allegedly resisted at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport last Thursday.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
