Gunshots and loud explosions of yet-to-be-determined origin were reported late Wednesday night around the Niamey International Airport in the Niger Republic.
The development was made public by counter-insurgency and Lake Chad region security analyst, Zagazola Makama, in a post shared on X on Thursday.
According to Makama, local sources confirmed that the airport vicinity witnessed intense detonations accompanied by sustained gunfire, triggering panic in the area.
The sources added that normalcy has since been restored, although the identity of those responsible for the incident remains unclear.
As of the time of filing this report, no official information has been released regarding casualties.
Nigerien security authorities are yet to issue a detailed statement on the incident, while investigations are expected to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding the disturbance.
