Naira to Dollar Exchange Rate Today, June 25, 2026: Nigerian currency extends depreciation

The Nigerian naira extended its depreciation streak against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Thursday, marking a third consecutive day of losses.

According to data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the naira closed at N1,380.11 per dollar on Thursday, compared to N1,380.07 recorded on Wednesday.

 

The latest exchange rate represents a marginal depreciation of N0.04 against the dollar on a day-to-day basis.

 

At the parallel market, however, the naira remained unchanged, trading at N1,400 per dollar, the same rate recorded on Wednesday.

 

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s external reserves rose further to $51.21 billion as of Thursday, reflecting continued growth in the country’s foreign exchange buffer.

 

Despite the increase in reserves, the naira has weakened against the dollar for three consecutive trading sessions at the official market, continuing the downward trend recorded earlier in the week.

Tinubu to review N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers- Gbajabiamila

Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, has indicated that the Federal Government is considering a review of workers’ salaries, noting that the current N70,000 minimum wage no longer reflects prevailing economic realities.

 

Gbajabiamila made the remarks on Thursday in Abuja during a labour event organised by Working People United.

 

According to him, the N70,000 minimum wage approved by the Tinubu administration in 2024 represented a major milestone at the time but now requires reassessment in light of current economic conditions.

 

“N70,000 wage, which was a milestone in 2024, must be honestly reassessed against today’s realities,” he said.

 

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives assured organised labour that the government would engage workers constructively whenever discussions on a wage review begin.

 

“I can confirm to you that when the time comes to begin the process of reviewing the national minimum wage, this administration will approach that endeavour not as an adversary of Labour, but as a partner,” he stated.

 

Gbajabiamila further said President Tinubu remains committed to ensuring that workers receive fair compensation for their contributions to national development.

 

“President Tinubu has said time and again that the custodians of the nation’s machinery deserve a fair and commensurate wage, and as you all well know by now, this is the president who means precisely what he says and does exactly what he means,” he added.

 

He stressed that effective governance requires cooperation between government and citizens, describing it as a shared responsibility rather than a one-sided exercise.

 

“It must be said that good governance is not a performance stage by government for the benefit of a passive audience; it is a partnership between those who govern and those who are governed,” Gbajabiamila said.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed banks, payment service banks and other financial institutions to immediately freeze all accounts, assets and transactions linked to six individuals and four Bureau De Change (BDC) operators designated for terrorism financing.

 

The directive was contained in a circular dated June 24, 2026, with reference number CMD/FCS/PUB/CIR/002/011.

 

According to the apex bank, the latest update to the Nigeria Sanctions List, which took effect on June 18, 2026, is binding on all regulated institutions and must be implemented without delay.

 

The CBN instructed financial institutions to “identify and immediately freeze, without prior notice, all funds, assets, and other economic resources belonging to, owned, held, or controlled, directly or indirectly, by the designated persons and entities.”

 

The move follows sanctions imposed by the United States Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on a Nigerian, Mukhtar Adamu, and three bureau de change companies over their alleged involvement in financing the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

 

In a follow-up action, the Nigerian government released the names of six individuals and three entities placed on its terrorism financing sanctions list.

 

Those listed are Ibrahim Yakubu Ogirima, Adamu Chiroma, Ibrahim Abubakar, Abdullahi Umar Usman, Babangida Muhammed, Adamu Hammajam, as well as Abbal Bako & Sons Bureau De Change Limited, Generation Currency BDC Limited and Nine to Nine BDC Limited.

 

Reacting to the development, President of the Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria, Aminu Gwadebe, cautioned against generalising the actions of a few operators to the entire sector.

 

“The overwhelming majority of licensed BDC operators comply with Nigerian laws and regulatory requirements,” he said.

Nollywood actress Omeche Oko has been hospitalised after surviving a serious motorbike accident while filming a movie just days before her birthday.

The actress shared a video of the incident on her Instagram page on Wednesday, revealing how she narrowly escaped death during the shoot.

 

According to the footage, Oko was filming a scene on a motorcycle with fellow actor Victory Michael at a movie location in Lagos when the bike crashed into a pole.

 

The impact left Victory Michael unconscious for a brief period after hitting his chest against the pole, while Oko sustained a broken leg.

 

Crew members and colleagues at the scene immediately rushed the actors to a medical facility for treatment.

 

Reflecting on the incident, Oko described the experience as a close brush with death and noted that the accident reminded her of how fragile life can be.

 

“Life is very very fragile. It could have been a different story but God said No. If you see an actor today, give them a hug. We take a lot of risk for the craft. All I can say is thank you God,” she wrote.

Former United States Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Tibor Nagy, has slammed the Nigerian government over alleged efforts in the US to expose sanctions on American-based separatist leader Ogechukwu Nkere.

Nagy disclosed this in his recent statement on X after a conversation with Nkere.

“Nigerians in former Biafra suffered greatly, never fully recovering from the horrendous war. Also tragic is the Nigerian government’s refusal to admit there is a huge problem with targeted violence against Christians.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has imposed a 16-hour curfew across 10 local government areas surrounding the Old Oyo National Park following growing security concerns over the abduction of students and teachers in the area.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that the national park has become a major source of concern for residents, with reports indicating that bandits are holding recently abducted victims within the forest reserve.

No fewer than 39 students and seven teachers were kidnapped last month from communities in Oriire Local Government Area.

In response to the security situation, Makinde on Tuesday announced a curfew covering the 10 local government areas bordering the park.

The directive was contained in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musibau Babatunde, and made available to journalists through the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju.

According to the statement, the curfew will take effect from Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

The government said residents in the affected areas must observe the restriction of movement between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. daily for an initial period of 48 hours.

The affected local government areas are Oriire, Orelope, Irepo, Saki West, Saki East, Atisbo, Itesiwaju, Iseyin, Olorunsogo and Atiba.

The state government said the measure is part of efforts to address the worsening security challenges around the Old Oyo National Park and facilitate ongoing operations aimed at securing the release of the abducted students and teachers.
