2027: Two opposition governors set to join APC

Nigeria’s political scene is undergoing renewed shifts as at least two serving governors elected on opposition platforms are poised to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State and Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State are expected to be formally received into the APC this week at separate ceremonies.

In Kano, Governor Yusuf’s anticipated return to the APC comes after his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), a development that has sparked widespread defections across the state. Several top political actors—including members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight federal lawmakers, and all 44 local government chairmen—have reportedly dumped the NNPP following Yusuf’s exit, significantly weakening the party’s structure.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his media aide, Bature Tofa, the governor said his decision was guided by his political history and a conviction that the APC provides a more stable and reliable platform for effective governance.

The statement recalled that Yusuf was previously a member of the APC, having joined the party in 2014, and once contested for the Kano Central Senatorial seat before stepping down for former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The governor is also believed to be seeking stronger cooperation with the federal government, especially in the areas of security, infrastructure, and service delivery, which he views as essential to Kano State’s development.

Meanwhile, in Plateau State, preparations are underway for a major political event in Jos, where Governor Caleb Mutfwang is expected to be officially welcomed into the APC on Tuesday.

The reception is expected to draw prominent party leaders, including APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, as well as several governors, ministers, and key stakeholders.

Describing the occasion as historic, the Chairman of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee, Sir Joseph Ari, said Plateau State would take center stage in national politics during the event, adding that all arrangements had been finalized for a grand reception for the governor.

Impeachment: Our challenges are surmountable with God—Fubara sends message to Wike, Rivers Assembly members

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has voiced confidence that the state will emerge stronger from its current governance challenges, stressing that divine support will guide the administration through difficult times.

The governor said with God’s backing, his government will continue to safeguard the state’s leadership, institutions, and citizens.

Fubara, who spoke through his deputy, Ngozi Odu, made the remarks on Sunday at the 2026 Holy Ghost Rally organized by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

According to him, the state government draws strength and assurance from its faith in God, describing the rally’s theme, “The All-Sufficient God,” as timely and reassuring given present realities.

“With the Almighty God on our side, our challenges are surmountable, and our future remains hopeful,” the governor said.

He explained that the theme highlights the certainty that, even in moments of uncertainty, God remains a reliable source of direction, strength, provision, and grace, adding that divine sufficiency becomes most evident when human efforts fall short.

Fubara also commended the RCCG for its sustained prayers for Rivers State and Nigeria, praising the church’s contribution to promoting moral values, unity, and faith among the people.

Popular Nigerian businessman Obinna Iyiegbu, better known as Obi Cubana, has said that his most important focus at the moment is winning souls for Jesus Christ.

The billionaire hotelier made the statement in a Facebook post on Sunday amid criticism over his recent association with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Nigerian Newssphere recalls that an APC support group, the City Boy Movement, which is campaigning for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu, recently named Obi Cubana as its South-East Coordinator.

The appointment sparked backlash on social media, with critics accusing the businessman of aligning with an administration they blame for the country’s current economic hardships.

However, addressing the situation in his post, Obi Cubana wrote that “the MOST important assignment now is winning souls for Christ.”

“Our week is way too blessed and full of fruitfulness, amen! Awesome time in God’s presence as always,” he added.

It will be recalled that the founder of Streams of Joy International, Pastor Jerry Eze, recently announced that he had led Obi Cubana to Christ.

Wizkid: Fela Kuti only musician greater than me—Burna Boy

0

Grammy-winning Afrobeat star Burna Boy has declared that the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, remains the only musician greater than him.

Burna Boy made the remark amid the ongoing controversy involving singer Wizkid and Fela’s youngest son, Seun Kuti, over comparisons between Wizkid and the late music icon.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that the dispute erupted after Wizkid’s fans compared him to Fela, a development that sparked a heated exchange on social media. Seun Kuti, who appeared displeased with the comparison of Wizkid to his father, later lashed out at the singer, days after Wizkid had traded words with his fans online.

The clash has since triggered widespread debate about Fela’s legacy and influence, dividing Nigerians on social media, including celebrities. While some have criticized Wizkid for what they described as disrespect toward the late Afrobeat legend, others blamed Seun Kuti for escalating the situation by attacking the singer and his supporters.

Reacting to the controversy, Burna Boy weighed in during a video shared on Instagram by Tunde Ednut on Saturday evening, where he stated, “Fela is the king. He is the only one greater than me.”

ATM Operations: CBN to introduce new debit card issuance rules

0

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced plans to roll out a new regulatory policy aimed at improving debit card issuance and Automated Teller Machines operations across the banking sector.

The announcement was made by the CBN Governor, Yemi Cardoso, through his Special Adviser, Fatai Karim, at the 2026 Committee of Heads of Bank Operations Conference held at the weekend.

The move is part of efforts to tackle persistent cash access challenges and restore public confidence in electronic payment systems.

According to the apex bank, the proposed policy will align the number of debit cards issued by banks with their deployed ATM infrastructure, a measure expected to reduce congestion, frequent downtime, and uneven cash availability across the country.

The CBN observed that recurring ATM failures and cash shortages continue to weaken trust in digital payment channels, despite the rapid growth of electronic transactions within the banking system.

“Very soon, the Central Bank will be coming up with another policy to sanitise and improve the situation, particularly around how many cards banks issue relative to the number of ATMs they support. When cash access fails, whether due to prolonged ATM outages or uneven distribution, the credibility of the entire payment system is weakened,” the bank said.

Kwankwaso declares January 23 ‘Betrayal Day’ after Kano Governor Abba dumps NNPP

0

The 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has described January 23 as a “day of betrayal” following the defection of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf from the party.

Kwankwaso made the declaration on Friday after the governor officially resigned from the NNPP and announced his decision to align with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Addressing a large gathering of supporters in Kano State, the NNPP leader said the date should be formally recognised and recorded in history to highlight what he described as a breach of trust.

“Today, as the leader of this movement, I declare January 23 as Betrayal Day,” Kwankwaso said. “We believe that this day should be permanently recorded in history to ensure global awareness of betrayal and the breaking of trust.”

He also appealed to Governor Yusuf to reconsider his decision, urging him to remain within the opposition party. Kwankwaso argued that the mandate secured through the NNPP should not be surrendered to political rivals.
