President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday night held a closed-door meeting with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, amid rising tension over the union’s planned nationwide protest against insecurity.
The high-level talks appeared aimed at addressing labor’s concerns ahead of the protest scheduled for December 17.
Those in attendance included the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma; Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo; Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris; and the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.
The labor delegation was led by the president of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero.
Although details of the meeting were not made public, sources suggested the discussions focused on finding common ground on pressing national issues and possibly preventing the planned mass action.
The meeting comes just days after the NLC reiterated its resolve to proceed with the protest, insisting there would be “no going back,” a stance that has heightened pressure on the government to urgently address citizens’ grievances over insecurity.
