Kwankwaso: Why I introduced Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act—US Lawmaker, Riley Moore

A member of the United States Congress, Riley Moore, has explained why he, alongside Chris Smith, introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026.

Moore made the clarification during an interview on Newsmax, where he said the bill was designed to address what he described as the brutal persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that United States lawmakers recently initiated a bill aimed at strengthening accountability over alleged human rights abuses in Nigeria. The proposed legislation includes provisions for possible sanctions against Fulani militias and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Explaining the motivation behind the bill, Moore said, “I introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026 with Rep. Chris Smith to confront the brutal persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

“This bill—what is a really important aspect of it—is focusing on looking at some of the bad actors there, specifically the Fulani, the Islamic group that’s been going around terrorizing Christians within Nigeria.

“The bill will also give the administration of President Donald Trump the ability to sanction those individuals and then also report back to Congress on it.

“As you know, the president has been very focused on protecting Christian populations in Nigeria that are suffering persecution at a scale that has never really been seen on the continent of Africa as it relates to Christians specifically.

“This legislation will hold radical Islamic terrorists accountable for murdering Christians for their faith in Jesus Christ. I will never stop fighting for our persecuted brothers and sisters.”

Nigerian Newssphere also reports that former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and Fulani herdsmen groups have been identified as potential targets for sanctions under the proposed legislation.
