The 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has described January 23 as a “day of betrayal” following the defection of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf from the party.
Kwankwaso made the declaration on Friday after the governor officially resigned from the NNPP and announced his decision to align with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Addressing a large gathering of supporters in Kano State, the NNPP leader said the date should be formally recognised and recorded in history to highlight what he described as a breach of trust.
“Today, as the leader of this movement, I declare January 23 as Betrayal Day,” Kwankwaso said. “We believe that this day should be permanently recorded in history to ensure global awareness of betrayal and the breaking of trust.”
He also appealed to Governor Yusuf to reconsider his decision, urging him to remain within the opposition party. Kwankwaso argued that the mandate secured through the NNPP should not be surrendered to political rivals.
