Copa del Rey: Barcelona set record after 4-0 loss to Atletico Madrid

Barcelona recorded an unwanted milestone on Thursday night following their 4-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final.

The Blaugrana were outplayed away from home at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium, as Diego Simeone’s side took firm control of the tie.

An own goal by Eric García, along with strikes from Antoine Griezmann, Ademola Lookman, and Julián Álvarez, sealed a dominant victory for the hosts.

According to OptaJose, the result means Barcelona have now conceded four goals in the first half of a match for only the second time since the 2004/05 season.

The only previous occurrence came in August 2020, when Barcelona suffered a historic 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

The second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final is scheduled to be played in March.
