The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has insisted that the Federal High Court in Abuja has no jurisdiction to try him, just as the court prepares to deliver judgment on his case today (Thursday).
In a fresh motion filed before the court, Kanu argued that the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, the law under which he is being prosecuted, has been repealed. He maintained that the charges against him “disclose no offence known to law” and should therefore be struck out.
Kanu also asked the court to nullify the “purported plea of not guilty” entered on his behalf, alleging that it was secured through deception and in violation of a Supreme Court decision. He urged the court to void all subsequent proceedings and order his immediate release.
“My contention is very simple: this court lacks jurisdiction to try me,” he stated.
Nigerian Newssphere reports that Kanu arrived at the court on Thursday amid heightened tension. Earlier, his brother, Emmanuel Kanu, had raised an alarm that security operatives had surrounded their family home ahead of the judgment.
