The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) says construction of its coal and liquid fertilizer plants in Kano State is nearing completion, a development expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s food security.

In a statement on Thursday by NASENI’s spokesperson, Olasegun Ayeoyenikan, the coal fertilizer project, described as the first of its kind in the country, is being executed through a technology transfer agreement involving the Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by NASENI; Indonesia’s PT Saputra Global Harvest; and Nigerian partner, Whitefog Environmental Services Limited. NASENI and Whitefog are also collaborating on the establishment of a liquid fertilizer plant.

The projects are designed to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s eight-point agenda on food security and align with the Sustainable Development Goals, including Zero Hunger, No Poverty, Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Responsible Consumption and Production.

Nigeria’s declining soil quality has remained a major challenge for farmers, with conventional NPK fertilizers often proving inadequate. NASENI’s coal fertilizer, an environmentally friendly alternative enriched with 26 additional mineral concentrates and advanced activation technology, is expected to improve soil fertility and enhance crop yields.

During an inspection of the facilities, including production factories, warehouses, laboratories, and administrative buildings, the Acting Coordinating Director of the Engineering Infrastructure Directorate at NASENI and project coordinator, Engr. Dr. Agava Abdullahi Abdulrasheed, said the initiative would have a far-reaching impact on agriculture.

According to him, the project will lead to improved soil quality, increased farm productivity, and better harvests for Nigerian farmers.

Chairman of Whitefog Environmental Services Limited, Alhaji Hassan Inuwa Babura, disclosed that construction at the permanent site along Wudil Road in Kano had advanced significantly, adding that key machinery is already en route to Nigeria and awaiting clearance at the seaport.

He said fertilizer production is expected to commence between May and June 2026.

NASENI noted that the coal and liquid fertilizer projects are expected to generate about 2,000 direct jobs and over 20 million indirect jobs across the agricultural value chain, stimulating economic growth and improving livelihoods nationwide.
